Diesel knock. Can be a few factors concerning this but is down to the combustion process. Firstly you need to make sure your timing is spot on. Look on my channel there is a video under setting the FIP pump timing on a tdi engine with the cover plate on. Valve clearances should be correct. After then check that there is not a blowing seal on an injector somewhere on any of the 4. The Injectors have 2 phases, they inject twice. once at 200 atm and the next at 280 atm..... If the springs in the injectors are getting worn or lost their setting the first or second squirt of injection from any of the injectors could be at the wrong pressure meaning at the wrong time or not at all until the FIP provides more pressure. Solution is a set of service exchange injectors or have them overhauled by a specialist. Failing injector fault then the FIP may need a recalibration. Diesels don't you just love 'em?

Get the rocker cover off and check the rocker arms and shaft are OK, the studs that clamp it down can strip their thread causing the pushrods to bounce the shaft up and down or even snap the shaft creating a knock like this.

It's still the same ... and we've heard the similar knock on other 300 tdi's. The engine runs very smoothly otherwise. Have you got any further with your result?

Long screw driver to vacuum pump and to your ear. Then go from there

Mine has a similar noise. Replaced vacuum pump with a new one (Wabco Made in France), the tick tick is still there. I've read somewhere about conrods problems! Hope it's not my case!!!!

We never got to the bottom of it... Had to sell the vehicle on because the turbo blew 😬🤕 Have a look at Tailerfitters Toolbox's answer below.

I think TF is right fuel injectors, be my first stop, people think they go on for ever but they are a service item!

No, I'm afraid not. We sold the vehicle due to emigration, but it kept running... One of the many mechanics reckoned it was the vacuum pump, but this didn't change anything. Concensus in the club in Holland was that there are a few engines out there that have this 'problem' but mostly it cures itself or doesn't do much harm. But look at Land Rover Toolbox Videos' answer down below. Cheers
