I don't know what happened to the .300 mag. but 3000 feet per second is a normal muzzle velocity for it.

Love that little WSM. Back when it was first introduced I contacted a custom barrel maker and had a Thompson Encore pistol barrel made for it. They hadn't even starting selling ammo for it when I got my barrel. Talk about fun to shoot! Double hearing protection was a must! 16" barrel with a muzzle brake, sometimes other shooters were bothered by it because of the enclosed cinder block building at the range and would pack up and leave.That gun in an enclosed space is wicked on the ole ear drums! When I started reloading for it I was working up loads trying to get to published velocities and was having troubles. Flattened primers and had a few cases crack just above the shoulder. Then I remember...... 16 INCH BARREL!!!! Advertised speeds are from 24" barrels. I got lucky that I didn't blow up the gun. I do have a load that is very close to the advertised velocity and only slightly flattens primers. (hunting only) My "just punchin holes" load is a light load.

I have a 300wm. Shot a moose through the lungs and it stated to walk away . Put another round in his head and he dropped. Shot another bull moose with it, hit him high in the neck. He was dead before he hit the ground. The lung shot went through and through. The neck shot did not. Their necks are thick solid muscle though. Both with 180 grain lead tips.

They're basically the same. Factory rounds have different charge weights that vary from round to round. The closest tolerances for consistent powder charges I've found come from nosler and hornady. In green box and white box and federal I've seen as big a gap in charges as 4 grains variance between each.

Hi, love your videos. Got a challenge for you to try if you want to. Just bought a 7mm mag and trying lots of different rounds. I've been shooting a 5/8 steel plate and some go through it but others barely scratch it, both are hunting rounds. The Sako arrowhead ll barely take the paint off, but, the Federal Vital shock go through it clean. My buddies think that it would work opposite on flesh and the Sako rounds would do more damage than Federals. So two pork shoulders would prove the truth here. Full description of both. Sako 7mm Rem Mag 407B Arrowhead ll swift scirocco ll 9,7 g 150gr. And the Federals are Vital Shock 180 grain.

I like to watch WHO TEE WHO .. and I Like to compare cartridges and loads in videos BUT there are so many excellent cartridges in both rifle and pistol for almost any application. One really has to think about what use a gun will be put to before selecting one over another. .. where it will be shot, what is the most likely target, what are ambient conditions (wet, dry, cold, hot, flat, steep, etc). Is it going to be carried in the field for long hikes? The shooter: new, experienced .. what? In the old days we had to modify for conditions (lke nail polish over primers or condoms on muzzles) Also what will a shooter be wearing (big thick reefer or light desert wear?) WHO TEE WHO is fun to watch!

00:03 Although the same bullet weight, is it safe to assume these loads are also from different ammo manufacturers? (Might have been nice to compare Remington vs. Remington, and WInchester vs WInchester, and Federal vs. Federal, vice just two (unnamed) random loadings that might skew folks into thinking one is drastically better or worse than another based on a sample size of exactly 1 random round per each loading....

You bought 2 rifles just so you could chronograph 1 round through each? My Model Remington 700, in 300 Remington Ultra Mag, chronographed 3,495 fps at 15 feet, using Barnes reloading manual data for Reloder 25. However, it had a 28 inch custom barrel. The short, fatter case of the 300 WSM with a rebated rim is likely not as good at feeding as the 300 Win Mag.

How much powder in each cartridge? Same powder, different powder?
@stephanM5
@stephanM5 4 жыл бұрын
Great video. The reason the the 300 WSM was faster was due to the powder in the shorter shell casing was closer to the primer charge thus it deflagrated that much quicker and forcefully than the longer 300 wm shell. WSM rounds have a flatter trajectory than the WinMag making it more accurate which is why competitive shooters prefer the WSM. Here's an idea that I think many of your subscribers would really enjoy to see from both an entertainment and scientific point of view with either of these rounds or better yet a 50 cal BMG Slap round. 1/Take a jug of water and set it on top of a stack of a dozen or so bricks with spaces between the bricks like you were going to karate chop them. 2/Since we all know that water cannot be compressed you shoot the jug of water and see how many bricks under the jug can be cracked stemming from the explosion of the bullet striking the water jug. 3/For the next shot we again repeat everything except this time we shoot the jug with reinforcing on all sides of the jug,(cement blocks or bags of sand would be best) at the rear of the jug and across the top, beside and in front of the jug leaving enough space for the bullet to hit the jug unobstructed so all of the explosive force is directed downward into the bricks and see how many bricks can be smashed or cracked by the concussive force of the water. I'm willing to bet that not only will the bricks be cracked but pulverized. 4/With the use of your slow motion camera this experiment would scientifically demonstrate the kinetic force of any bullet much more accurately than merely shooting though a bunch of paper plates or wooden boards as it would capture the energy of the bullet using water as the medium to destroy objects. Note: A buddy of mine used to be a hard rock miner which meant he was experienced in using dynamite. He said if he put even a shovel full of dirt over the sticks of dynamite the resulting explosive force directed into the rock would be multiplied many times. It is this phenomenon that I would like to see duplicated with a high velocity bullet. Knowing water is not compressible and with a fast travelling bullet north of 3000 fps striking a jug of water would act similar to dynamite and destroy anything that was near it. You can use this idea to pretty much blow up anything and you don't need dynamite. FYI In the industrial arena highly pressurized water is used as a blade to cut steel like a plasma cutter.

What’s a good scope for my Remington 7mm mag for under $3-400? I have some options but I’m curious what your opinion is.
@NorthwoodsNomad
@NorthwoodsNomad 3 жыл бұрын
Steven Adams there are some options in that price range . Here’s a little secret unknown to the majority of hunters in the world , most scope manufacturing companies believe it or not get their glass from a European company called ( Meopta) and brand their own name on the scope tube itself ! You can research it , it’s true ! So paying high dollar for a name brand is typically what it boils down to . For instance Redfield optics were bought out by Leupold & Stevens and are made in the Beaverton , Oregon Leupold plant on the very same assembly lines . Same glass , same tubes , with some slightly different features or reticles , and different badging . So I can assure you that Redfield scopes are highly regarded as a respectable and trustworthy brand as equally as any Leupold out there . This is typically referred to as ‘ platform sharing’ commonly known in the automotive industry. Ford ,Lincoln Mercury were all birds of the same feather. As well as Chevrolet, GMC , Buick all are General Motors products with slightly different options features and badges, but they all are made from the same components when it comes down to the engine and transmission and mechanics. So the same holds true with Leupold and Redfield . Also don’t overlook a Weaver scope , they are rugged , durable and very functional scopes . Bushnell scopes are quality made optics as well , using “Bausch & Lomb” optics who happen to make glass for the medical industry for microscopes and such . And I wouldn’t overlook Nikon either , side by side next to a Leupold, I can’t notice any difference looking down the tube , both have outstanding clarity! Again , quality scopes with great glass at a fraction of the price as much higher end optics companies. Remember what I said above about how most of these companies buy their glass from Meopta ( which also manufactures rifle scopes themselves at much cheaper prices than the big name companies) Swarovski, Leica, Nightforce, Zeiss , and some others are very high end quality optics , but from my experience, a good quality Leupold is my Go To brand . What separates the big players from the others is when low light conditions come into play , you see a more crisp and clear sight picture and have a bit more of shooting light available, but you have to ask yourself “ is an extra 5-10 minutes of shooting light worth a price tag of 3 or 4 times ? “ a lot of that quality has to do with the coating on the glass itself which can be costly and that in itself will drive up the price of the scope . But , when it comes down to it , you get what you pay for . Also, NEVER skimp on your optics. A good rule of thumb is that the cost of your scope should be as much or more than your rifle itself. Assess your needs and shop accordingly. Ammo is another topic , but don’t skimp on that either , buy the best quality premium ammo you can afford, that hunt of a lifetime may only provide you with one opportunity.. MAKE IT COUNT AND HAVE NO REGRETS . Just be sure your rifle groups it well . Good luck and happy hunting .

i think they made short mag to get rid of the belt at bottom of the bullet on the 300 win mag (extra ring above primer/extractor slot) some say that causes accuracy problems and the neck of the 300 win mag say is too short to hold proper pressure on the bullet plus the bullet extends into the powder chamber more than it theoretically should - overall i think the short mag was made to help get rid of these "so called" problems of the 300 win mag. This is just what i have heard so it may or may not be right or whatever .

What does a belt have to do with velocity ? Belts are just left overs from the old days. No use whatsoever.

I'll be darn, the Fat Boy Won. That was interesting, learned something today visual... I didn't have to go read and research, watched it happen. That was a cool comparison. That's a big deal 3000+ fps vs 2800+ fps with the same bullet.

If you understood physics you would understand why the short fat cartridge won the velocity contest. Let me help. Cut both the cases in half length wise so you can see the interior if the casing. The path from the primer to anywhere inside the 300 wsm is shorter than the 300 wm. What this means is the powder burns faster and hotter, thus more velocity. All the short fat cartridges are more efficient in this way. What is remarkable is that it too the arms and ammo makes so long (how many decades?) to figure this out.

You've got me into both actions right now and I'm kind of a kick. I'm looking for a 7 mm Remington magnum. Budget Budget rifle What do you think Review my best thing for buck. I would think with the magnum I'd want at least 24" barrel

I have both. If I had to punch out at a further target I would grab my 300win, only because my remington has a longer barrel than my tika. Both are out standing rounds.

I'm not 'nerdy' and i do appreciate you going to all the effort to make a video and upload it. But yes you need to get the average of at least five shots from each calibre and take the average figure. Also I don;t know what barrel lengths you are running but the 300WSM only requires 23" to achieve peak velocity where as the 300 Win Mag requires a 26" barrel. Either way they are both on a par in real hunting terms. Thanks for sharing.
