I have 26 years experience on the Phantom as a hydraulics mechanic. Homestead, Clark, Korat, and Bergstrom. Got my 9 level and loved every minute of it! I salute ALL the JASDF mechanics for doing what they do! So much work to do but NOTHING more rewarding!!! Even did a joint exercise with the JASDF flying out of Chitose AB back in the late 80's. Very fond memories!

Its age is part of the answer. One of the last aircraft to focuss on all out speed rather than dogfighting. Actually a bit faster that the F-35 replacing it, and capable of carrying a heavier load. (Which is why it lasted so long in the interceptor and antiship roles) the thinktanks all agree stealth is now the way foward, so this muscle car is being put out to pasture :\

Thank you so much for this version with the sound of the engines, and the music adds a lot, too. All good things must come to an end. The Phantom was a reliable workhorse for many of the world's air forces for decades. It was the last time the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marines all used the same plane, and it's probably safe to say that no other plane will ever be as widely used, for so many different types of missions, by so many nations. Its pilots loved it, it has nothing left to prove, and it can retire with dignity.
