In this video I explain how to torque a connecting rod bolt, and how to check the stretch of the bolt, and why that is important.
The engine in this video is Tony Guzzo’s 302 Chevrolet for his 1968 Camaro Z/28.

It’s the things like this that make your channel so wonderful. Torquing bolts seems like an afterthought but if you don’t have everything prepped correctly and aren’t using the correct lubricant to torque with then those lb/ft torque wrench numbers go out the window. Using a stretch gauge makes it basically foolproof. Thanks AG!

Also I like to burnish the bolts like 5 times to 75% of overall torque before final pull down and check with stretch only.

That is a good idea. Polishing the threads reduces friction and creates more stretch. AG

Yes! The stretch vs torque changes first few cycles, then settles.

Thanks for another awesome video !!! Can you please add a video on SBC Timing Chains, timing chain slop, etc. to your roster

Thanks Matt, sure we will get to that eventually. chains seldom break, but they can mess up your timing. AG

The full stretch # is what they want you to shoot for. You can stretch them little bit more. ARP has a percentage of overall stretch you can go. ( and not freak out and toss bolt.) They set up stretch at like say 75%. They have a range of like 70% to 80% so they give you the middle #. You can go higher from ARP tech.

As usual good 'splainin'. Thanks. Are those rod bolt reusable or is that it for them? The production automotive world seems full of "torque to yield" fasteners these days from suspensions to engines.

These bolts are definitely reusable. I cover this detail in my Forsyth presentation. AG

Good video 👍🇦🇺 Is there any reason you didn’t select one of SCAT’s conrods that has a 7/16” rod bolt (instead of 3/8”) noting that this 302 is going to want to go to 7000rpm with the cams you are looking at? Thanks.
@goldsgarage8236
@goldsgarage8236 Ай бұрын
Thanks for the question Al. The original rods had 11/32 rod bolts torqued to 35 ft.lb. The so called pink rods were the same as any other SBC rods except they were shot peened to reduce stress concentration. The SCAT rod will be more than enough. AG

Hello, my name is Ken and I really enjoy your show. I am building a small block Chevy with a roller cam. I will be using either a timing chain with a Torrington bearing or a thrust washer. What advise would you give for trying to direct additional oil to the thrust washer or bearing? And which do you prefer, a thrust washer or a Torrington bearing? I am considering drilling a small .040 hole between the cam liner bore and the cam liner itself through to the oil feed hole coming up from the crank. Thank you for your help.
@goldsgarage8236
@goldsgarage8236 Ай бұрын
Thanks for the question Ken. Thrust forces with a roller are minimal and the factory oiling system provides plenty of lubrication. I have used the Torrington bearing successfully without any oiling modifications. AG

I drill a .020 hole in each lifter gallery plug like Gm did on late model blocks to bleed air from the gallery, you will get lots of oil from that.
