What we actually learned is that if you soften up your body armour with a 303 British and a 7.62 Mosin first, the 338 Lapua is definitely in with a chance.

I feel bad for KZfaqrs doing this sort of thing. Having multiple plates is expensive. Personally I'd rather they look at mild steel of a greater thickness. Not the same, but for most entertainment purposes pretty good.

Yep. Not exactly a scientific approach to the test. Shoot a new plate with .303 or 7.62x54 three times near the same spot and the 3rd shot would probably do the same.

303 ball surplus is readily found in Canada , Australia, UK and India, in fact it is still manufactured in India up till quite recently if not still actually being made, those soft points are the sporting hunting round version and being used against military body armor is pointless for I would think would be obvious reasons.

Herters(basically budget brand Winchester) makes .303 brand new as well and its cheap in Canada. Seen it for less than 20 bucks a box. And FMJ steel case Barnal 7.62x54r will mess up AR 500 steel with less than 20 rounds. Been my first hand experience

@@andrewthomsonyou can get 303 British ammo for around $1-$1.50 per round if you buy it in bulk surplus spam cans but most of them are older than 40years old and you have to be careful and make sure they have been stored in a dry climate and everything and you can possibly get some dud ammo from the spam cans so you are rolling the dice when getting it.

Yes I had several mk 111s in early sixties and the surplus ammo was mostly ww1 vintage with cordite strands for propellant and had many duds, the later mk 7 round with ball powder powder was better. This is in Australia, the rounds of mk7 was 10 cents a round up to the 80,s.

The wartime .303 round was a boat-tailed, spire point fmj round that had a wood or compressed card tip backed by lead. The idea was that the round would hit a target, bend like a banana and tumble through the wound to cause maximum injury. The soft tip was also a money saving thing during austerity, and got around the dum-dum prohibitions. Your test rounds probably use nitro-cellulose smokeless powder instead of Cordite stick propellants. The original .303 had an accurate range of 1000 yards, but could fly in excess of 1.5 miles. When trialled in the new .303 BREN machine gun, a mag of 30 rounds cut down a tree, so the barrel was de-accuratised to spread the coverage. Your .303 was the SMLE carbine version as opposed to the rifle, which had furniture to the full length of the barrel and weighed 8.5 lbs fully loaded. The later SMLE Mk IV and Mk IV* had folding sights and a longer barrel extension.

Several years ago, I shared a 1,000 rd purchase of FMJ .303. It was made in Belgium in the 1980s. I also bought a few cloth bandoliers of clipped FMJ milsurp .303. I still have some of both. I'd be happy to send you some for your experiments but I'm not sure about mailing ammo cross the border (I'm in Canada) with all the insanity of our two lefty governments. There's a famous mil story that states that the Brit/Commonwealth armies in WW1 loaded some rds backwards to defeat German counter-sniper armor plates. I've seen articles about this and I believe there is a vid on YT somewhere that tests the theory. Seems to work.

Wolf makes some copper coated steel cased fmj .303 and got Remington lead tipped that looks similiar to the 7.62 round you got there. I actually haven’t found the .303 rounds you have!! 😆 the wolf performs pretty well and was much cheaper than the Remington which was hunting ammo at $34-39 a box of 20 vs the wolf which was 20 for $20. It seemed to be a littler more difficult to eject the rounds with the steel case but not much of an issue for being half the price!! Was pretty much a non issue just not as smooth as the brass

I'm really glad that the FMJ turned out not to be 7.62x54R. I was looking at both cartridges and thinking that I'd gone crazy because they didn't appear to be the same caliber. For your video purposes, the .303 British and Mosin rounds not going through the plate were bad. For anyone who owns RTS Tactical plate, their not going through the plate is great news. At 10 or 20 yards, I'm not sure that the plate stopping a .338 Lapua round is going to save the wearer. That much force hitting the chest would be brutal. Your friends at Bad Dobby's have some nice lizards, but I'm disappointed that they don't have any good snakes.

What some don't understand is " Body Armor" can stop a bullet. But, yes the energy transfer to the body from the bullet can cause Hemorrhage, broken bones, and be very painful causing severe pain or even loss of feeling.

You must be talking about soft armor. Hard plates absorb the energy and spread it out over the entire steel plate. It's not going to feel good but it's generally not going to do all the damage as you described.

Just commenting. No disrespect meant Sir. I’m Canadian. The No. 1 Mk. 3 was my first rifle when I got my licence in 1978. I believe they approximate 7.62X51 level, while 7.62X54R are approximate 7.62X63. Some feeding issues may be caused by the rimmed cartridge. Also, trigger is pretty much “two stage”. There is a lot of take up until you reach the next resistance. Then , not so bad. Maybe designed to help prevent AD/ND from new recruits? Both great rifles for different reasons. Here in Canada, most hunters own at least one .303. We have used them for everything from ground hogs to moose. I assume bear as well. Thank you for what you do Sir. Much respect from Canada.

That metal plate AR500 is called Hardox 500 here in Europe, I work with it all the time. I recommend you buy the whole metal sheet of the same thickness for testing, it will be much cheaper.

I've had a mosin for a while. I've only fired the spam can ammo through it. It has about refrigerator door MOA. Maybe one day ill put reasonable ammo through it. The bore seems oversized for the bullet diameter. That 303 round looks circumcised... Why is the cannelure way the heck up there? 🤔Are they reloads?

WTW next time you bring out the .338 lapua can you set the cartridge on the table next to the .303 to compare the size? You're hilarious and a blast. 👍💥😁

Nice WTW! If you get on that google machine and use ammo seek or ammo buy, searching the mosin round, you can find armor piercing rounds and russian tracer spotting rounds which are explosive tips. Now that would be interesting to see how those fair on the body armor.

remember the 303 is a very old cartridge, Muzzle velocity will not top 2600fps if that. as a hunting round, i would limit my shots on deer to under 300 yds. not a very diverse choice of bullets either, compared to the 30-06.

The softpoint .303 Brit ammo is all one can find from U. S. manufacturers; it's all made for hunting use. The FMJ stuff will be either surplus - and the supply is running out, it is finite - or PPU (Privi Partisan) makes brand new FMJ .303 Brit ammo for military rifle buffs (at least before the recent panic). Of course, right now dadburn near everything is scarce. And just to show you're correct, FMJ rounds should be compared to FMJ rounds; (you should have used...). And truthfully, if I were contingently planning to engage a belligerent with body armor, FMJ (if not AP -armor piercing) would be available. (Presuming I could prepare.) I did shoot the PPU ammunition and checked speed with a chronograph. It clocks about 100 fps slower than some 'Olin' made ammunition which seems to be a duplication of the British specifications. Just under 2400 fps; pretty serious round. Holding the two (7.62x54Rmm and the unknown round) as you did shows the unknown round has a longer case than the Mosin round. As the Mosin round is 54 mm long (that's what the name means) the unknown round is longer. I suspect (no guarantee) that case may be 57mm (2.24 inches) long, likely a 8x57mm Mauser round. All in all I like the premise of the video. It compares 'this' to 'that' and fairly. You seem to be a pretty good shooter. I like that. By the way, soft point hunting rounds are not intended to penetrate body armor. The Lapua is used for sniping, but probably used more for large game. It has more brute force. Just so you know: I do not have all this stuff in my head. If you do not have one, get a recent edition of . It is a marvelous reference book and history lesson about such things. Don't memorize it all, just check on what you have and things you show. And a decent loading manual will tell you about the length and width of cartridges.
