In this video I talk about how the .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, and .300 Winchester Magnum compare to each other.
I think most hunters would probably agree that those 3 cartridges are all incredibly popular and effective for hunting all sorts of big game all over the world. However, while there are some big differences between the 308 vs 30-06 vs 300 Win Mag in some areas, those differences are often made out to be much bigger than they are in reality.
Additionally, while they are indeed different in a few key aspects, they also have a lot in common. Not surprisingly, there is often quite a bit of confusion surrounding the strengths and weaknesses of the .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, and .300 Winchester Magnum and how they compare to each other.
So, this video is a detailed analysis of the 308 vs 30-06 vs 300 win mag so you can make an informed decision regarding which individual cartridge fits your particular hunting needs the best.

I can't afford multiple rifles. So I chose one that I could use anywhere on anything. 30-06 Springfield. 125 grains up to 220 grains and reloading makes this old round almost free. The other two are fantastic cartridges as well. I just chose the one that fit my way of thinking.

If you're only planning on hunting deer and smaller game, and only planning to use 150gr bullets, the 308 is a great choice. The shorter 150gr bullets don't eat into the case capacity. Once you start getting into longer boat tail 165s or any 180s and higher, you really start eating up the usable case capacity and the 30-06 starts to take off from the 308. The long neck gives you lots of "room for activities" and basically all 06s are twisted 1 in 10. The 06 really comes into its own with 180gr bullets. If you're thinking of stepping up to the win mag, it really only makes sense if larger critters are on the table, and longer range shots are more probable. Impact velocities (not muzzle) over 2900 or so fps are really hard on both bullets and meat, so I really don't recommend 150s in the win mag unless they're copper monolithic and there's an almost guarantee of 200 plus yard shots. The 300 does really well with 180 and up grain bullets. It gives you a bit more forgiveness with mis judging wind or distance than the 06. All this said, it's good to remember that they all fire the same bullets. Higher velocities really only give you more range, not more power to an extent. Shoot good bullets, know your limits, and practice often. All 3 are great!

so if i wanted one of these for canada Bison , Elk , Moose and Grizzly bear (if needed )you think 300 win mag wood fit the bill best? i believe for hunting bison in canada the legal recomendation is to use a 175 grain bullet or bigger with 2000 plus foot lbs of energy at 100 yards , ive been researching it a little bit , thinking Nosler Etip( copper) 180 Grain , Barnes LRX 175 grain , Barnes TTSX 180 grain , Hornady CX 180 grain , or even Barnes LRX 190 grain if i got into reloading

I used for decades the 30-06 in a REM 700. I then switched to a .300 Win. In a model 70 Win. I soon found out that the 300 Win mag was a meat spoiler in Moose and deer. I am not a long range shooter, the terrain I hunt, the Canadian boreal forest, limits shots well within 300 yards for 90+% of the time. I then switched to the .308 Win in a Sako A7. For moose, elk and deer where I hunt, it is as effective as the other 2 in a lighter rifle. I stayed with it .

Of the three, the 30-‘06 is the most versatile. The ‘06 with a 180 gr. Partition or a 175 gr. Barnes LRX, there isn’t much in North American or the African Plains you can’t take. I think the 3 not 6 was popular because of its military use, but I was never a fan. I preferred the 270 Win over the 308, and the ‘06 as well. Recently, the 6.5 CM has taken the wind out of its sails (and sales too). I also prefer the original 300 magnum, namely the 300 H&H. Yes it requires a larger action, but it’s more efficient, smother loading, and handles the very heavy projectiles better than the 300 Win. I also prefer the 300 WSM to the Winchester Magnum. It’s just amazing how versatile the 30-‘06 is. It’s perceived as old fashion by by younger hunters, but it’s still very much an incredible hunting cartridge.

300 Win-Mag was designed from the start as a magnum cartridge which would chamber in a standard long-action, and not require the additional material for a magnum-length/size receiver. Consequently, its neck is less than one-caliber in length, which limits bullet seating depth somewhat. For that reason alone, your choice of the older 300 H&H makes sense. It's a classic but still gets the job done. As an all-around cartridge for versatility, the 30-06 is tough to top.

Have used all three. Lean more to the 308 side. Ozark mountain hunting is a close range affair in many instances. I had a closer than expect shot on a big nanny doe with my 300 Win ( 30-40 yards ) and made a 180 Remington Core-Lokt, grenade like a varmint bullet. To much gun for my woods/distances. The '06 is the Goldilocks. And like you said, with modern powders ( Superformance and StaBALL 65 ) They taken the old warhorse to a new level. Bullet designs haven't been slouching either. All good things going forward.

And since I am seeing .308 ammo everywhere...that may be the way I go. But then again, unlike most, I do want a long barrel. Or maybe even a bullpup (with full length barrel of course). Have you much experience with centerfire rifles? I only ask because you mentioned that you’re not a big guy and that recoil is an issue. Well, I am a moderately big guy. I’m 6’1", 240lbs, and recoil was an issue for me until the last couple years. I think you’re on the right track getting the .308. It sounds like you’ve really done your homework concerning where you hunt and the conditions you’ll be dealing with. Just know this, even the .308 is capable of really beating you up if you have poor form with the rifle shouldered. Make damn sure you practice shouldering your rifle so that the base of the butt is squarely distributed top to bottom and placed in that crook area between your pec and the shoulder. Then suck that stock in tight so that it can’t gather momentum and punch you black and blue. Holding the rifle loosely against your shoulder is a great way to develop a flinch. Form is especially critical at the bench, where the rifle can really beat the sin out of you. When using a rest or sandbags, make sure the rifle is positioned high enough so that you don’t have to drape yourself over the rifle. You want to be squared up as much as possible to the rifle. Never let the butt ride up too high on your shoulder. If you do, the toe of the stock will punch you so hard, your eyes will water from pain every time you fire a shot. Before I learned these techniques, I was always fighting flinches and getting beat up by my .270 and .308. These cartridges aren’t exactly known as heavy kickers, but they beat me up just the same because of poor technique…especially that .308. Anyway, I hope this helps and doesn’t cause you any worry because you shouldn’t be. Just take the time to learn proper techniques for recoil mitigation, and you’ll avoid getting on that struggle bus like I did. Cheers.
@leifhoklin2681
@leifhoklin2681 Жыл бұрын
One more thing…while you practice shouldering your rifle, practice getting a repeatable chin weld on the stock in the same place again and again. It’s critical for recoil control and for mitigation of parallax.

The blog makes some good points. Additionally, I believe that on average, the 308 and 30/06 is capable of shooting more rounds before a barrel change is needed along with recoil considerations. Additionally, the 30/30 is also good for quick shots depending on the terrain for hunting.

I know that bullet weight is a factor also, short case equals less powder for heavy bullets. But with bullets are made very well from 110 gr to 180gr that the 308 can capitalize on. With technology you don’t have to exceed these bullet weights unless you just want to. If you got higher than 180 then yes the 308 lacks. But I have no need or want to exceed those weights. To each their own. I like both all the 30’s. The 308 is just efficient and gets it done with less

I love all three cartridges... But while the 308 can sort of do what a 30-06 can, and 30-06 can sort of do what tamer 300wm can...a loaded down 300wm can do anything you'd want the 06 for, but loaded hot with a high B.C bullet, seated far out, the 300wm is impressive. I've had a custom rifles in all three, İ gave the 308 to little brother, I sold the -06, and I still have the 300. Ultimately i think it comes down to personal philosophy. Do you want the bare minimum/the smallest you can get away with, are you recoil/blast sensitive or particularly weight sensitive or do you want to start with more gun because you can't overkill something. 7mm's are a lot more interesting for me. 7-08, 7-08Aİ, 280, 280Aİ, 7mm Rem Mag and 7x57... They all stand on their own. Even if you knocked it short to 7-08, 280Aİ and 7Mag, with the Mauser thrown in for a dark horse, they're a really interesting comparison.

If you throw in a 30-30.... it's good to have all of them. In most cases, the mag is a bit much. But if you handload.... it can open the door for even more flexibility. I find me shooting the 308 more and more.... right now ammo for the 308 seems to be more available.

I shoot Hornady Supeformance SST 150 grain out of a Browning X-Bolt Stalker Long Range 30-06. Comparing Remington Core-Lokt PSP 150 grain in 7mm Rem Mag & 300 Win Mag, Hornady Superformace 150 SST 30-06 has: * Higher B.C. (.415) * Better velocities (175-500 yards) * Better FT pounds energy (175-500 yards) * Less drop (300-500 yards) * Less wind deflection (150-500 yards) Therefore, I'll take the 30-06 over the 308, 7mm Rem Mag, and 300 Win Mag (If you compared those 3 ammunitions).

I am 70 years old and started shooting, taught by my grandfather, when I was 8 years old. At 18, I went into the military and then contractor. I love the 06 case. If you want specialized riffles, you have the 25-06, .270, 30-06, 338.06 and 35 Whelen. None of these are hard to handle, recoil is sane and if you know how to shoot, very accurate for ETHICAL ranges (400 yards and less). Personally, I don't go beyond 400 yards, it isn't necessary if you are truly HUNTING and not trying to be a wanna be so-called sniper.....lol

I think it's a little on the light side for brown bear, but will work in a pinch. I think the 160gr Partition is a good choice if you want to use it in that role, but I think the 175gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw is a better option for the really big bears.

I like all 3 cartridges and have guns for all 3. I have shot my first deer with a 30-06, so it has a special place in my heart. I have shot many more deer with my 308, only because my 308 is lighter, and handier in brush. I have also shot Caribou with it, one being 367 yards away with my deer loads. Another Caribou I shot with the same gun at 50 yards. I never shot any big game with a 300 Win Mag, but if I hunted in an area where I may see Grizzlys, I would want a 300 Win Mag in my hands, otherwise I will stick to my 30-06 and 308s. My main 308 that I hunt with is a Remington Model 7, with a custom barrel on it that is 20 inches long and very accurate. To me it is a perfect deer rifle in brush.

Wisconsin Hunter here. My personal favorite is .308 Winchester, as it will take out anything within 300 yards in my terrain from White Tailed Deer to Black Bear. We don't really have much larger animals past that unless you head further North towards Canada, where it's rare (but not unheard of) to come across Moose. I use both. 308 and 300 Winchester Magnum personally, so I've personally have had no problems taking out whatever crosses my scope. But between the two I love the .308 for its more moderate recoil and offering more versatility as AR-10 Semi-automatic type cartridge than the 300 Win Mag.

All 3 work fine, not that much difference between them. The MOST important things are that the hunter be familiar with, comfortable with and skilled with whatever rifle that is being used, and of course proper shot placement on the game being hunted. IF you really want to, anyone could hunt rabbits with a Weatherby 460 magnum or a Lapua 338 magnum, but a rifle chambered in rim fire 22 shorts works just as well. I have shot many Ptarmigan in Alaska, in the head, with my Remington 700 chambered in Springfield 30.06 rifle, with a variety of bullet weights. My Remington 700 chambered in Remington 223 works just as well. Just use whatever you have and be skilled and proficient with whatever weapon that you have. Happy hunting!!!

I've been comparing calibers so I can buy my first hunting rifle and I'd like some opinions. Is a .270 a good deer caliber within 150 yards or is it lacking in consistent stopping power? I've got plenty of experience within 150 yards but never owned my own rifle or bagged a deer
@Thebiggamehuntingblog

The 270 has more than enough power for deer, especially inside 150 yards. Since you're looking to purchase your hunting rifle, then you should definitely check out Hunting Guns 101. I designed that training specifically for people like you to help you get started off on the right foot. That training will show you an easy to understand and apply analytical approach to determining what sort of ballistic performance you need for the hunts you plan on doing. Then, I'll help you match the right cartridge, rifle, and ammo to fill those needs regardless of whether you're hunting elk out west, whitetail deer in thick timber, cape buffalo in Africa, or just about anything else. I've refined and proven this framework over the years and have used it with great success on hunts all over the world myself. Check it out at huntingguns101.com/order

The problem with limiting hunting distance when shopping for a do-all-only-rifle-I'll-ever-own, is what happens if a shot well above your shot ceiling presents itself? In which case it's better to select a cartridge with more horsepower for a bigger thump out past 200 yards. For that reason, I always step up beyond the outer limits of a shot I'm likely or hope to take. For me that's a 7mag, or 6.5-284 Norma. 270 Win is a good choice. Just know that it doesn't compare in velocity, or horsepower to the others I mention. You can do better, if you want to.
@braedenberan5709
@braedenberan5709 2 жыл бұрын
If you’re not gonna hunt anything bigger than deer, I would say the .270, or even .243 are to two best choices, but if you move up to Elk or bigger game, you can go wrong with .308 as the minimum. Personally, I love the 300 Win Mag, it shoots very flat, I got a POF P300, and it shoots like a dream, I go to Montana and all over the northern US and have bagged a number or moose, bighorn Rams, and mountain goats with it, but 300 Win Mag is if you want to get into longer range. If you ever want to do long range, look no further that 300 Win Mag, 300 WSM, or 338 Lapua, those are the rulers of long range.

I lived in NC on the coast where there are some huge Black Bears and typical Southern size deer, also a few hogs and a load of Coyotes. Hunting is mostly heavily wooded and swamp type land. If Im hunting somewhere long shots are required I use the Weatherby, mostly thick and swampy the 30.06 and one you did not mention but its a derivative of the 06, if Im going where I know there are large black bear the .35 Whelen...In coastal NC its not uncommon to run across a 6/700 lb black bear.

He's not saying the 308 isn't capable of killing mule deer and elk. He's saying the 30-06 and 300 Win Mag are better at that task. This is because of their higher muzzle velocity which gives them more reach and more retained kinetic energy at the longer ranges those animals are often taken at. This is in contrast to whitetail deer, which are usually (though not always) taken at shorter range and in thicker conditions.
