Is it worth upgrading from a 24kwh Nissan Leaf to a 30kwh one? It's a question I have been asking for ages and finally I get my answer.
I have been lent a 30kwh Nissan Leaf for my 80 mile commute. Should be easy, but when you just want to get home and the roads are clear who want to drive economically? Not me! I want to get home as quickly as possible. It's cold, the roads are empty and I'm on a mission. Let's see if this car is any good!
This car was kindly lent to me by JustEVs. Take a look at their impressive range of EVs here - www.justevs.co.uk/

Hi Ryan, I've just bought a second hand 30kwh leaf, had it four days now, so far so good, plus no off street parking. Relying on public charging only, luckily in Scotland so free vend, been iced twice, down charger once, still living the ev dream, many thanks to you, ev man, Ian and James cooke, cheers.

I love the old gen vs the new ones. Even the look of them. A demo 30kWh Tekna I used for 4 days managed about 100-110 miles. I even think the acceleration is good enough. Feels faster than 11 seconds. They're still about 15k for a good Tekna though

Owning both the 30kw tekna and the newer 40kw I absolutely agree the 30 is a great car - but the 40 is in a completely different league. So much that I would stretch the budget and upgrade your 24kw to a 40 instead. It drives better, has much better range, feels a lot more up to date, and has more room.

Another good video. 👍 A colleague at work had a 24kw leaf for a few months. He got rid of it, claiming the range simply wasn't what he expected. He tried to talk me out of going for a leaf... However, I am still interested, a 30kw would be fine for me. I am tempted though to wait and see how much the MG ZS will be here in the UK...

I'm still getting by on the 2015 S with the 24 kwh pack. But my drive to work is just 7 miles each way. So I'm the ideal user for one of those. One of my favorite cars ever. The thing I really hate about the Tesla is all the emphasis that they've put on performance. I think that has really clouded the whole focus/view on the EV thing. People should be talking more about how much more refined these cars feel over and above an ICE car. They redefine "smooth". I have the Leaf and a 2016 Volt Premier. I just don't enjoy driving ICE cars very much any more. And that includes my BMW Z4 and a Jeep Liberty/Cherokee.

Just purchased a 2017 leaf 30kwh with 6.6kw onboard charger we could of saved 5k and got a 2015 24kw with the 3.3kw onboard charger but no warranty on the battery compared to 4.5 years warranty remaining on the 2017 so that’s with the 6.6kw onboard charger made it the better decision even if it lost 20% battery degradation after the warranty it would still be like having a new 24kwh so 65-80miles range making a ideal second car or commuting to work

My PCP was reviewed and the upshot was that I was offered a 2017 30kWh instead of my 2015 24kWh. It's cost me a little more on the PCP but it's made a huge difference. I needed to charge daily in the old Leaf but the newer one only every couple of days. I don't make many longer journeys (>100 miles) but for me the range concerns I had have all but gone. And I agree, whilst it's the same car, the infotainment system feels a lot more up to date.

When I was looking for an EV last year, I got the 30kWh LEAF 2017 base trim and so glad I got it over the 24kWh LEAF... it was about a $5k difference in price, but the range of this LEAF makes up for that $5k... Had I gotten the 24kWh LEAF, I think I would have a lot more range anxiety for my driving routine than this one. My average efficiency is about 4mi/kWh.

I really want an ev. I quite like the newer leaf. I feel even though an older leaf would do my commute I'd be relying on public chargers as we only have on street parking at our flat and not sure how often i would be guaranteed somewhere to charge without going out the way . I know we have a fair few chargers in Salisbury most the park and rides have one so something I could charge up once or twice a week. Need to have a good look into affordability I'd be happy to spend more on an ev if I'm saving the equivalent in running costs.

Great videos. However, I am looking at 2016, 2017 Leafs to buy in the US now and very, very few don't have considerable battery degradation. What I mean by that is 2-3 bars lost after 30K miles. Scary. Not sure if people are getting rid of the bad ones or what, but is really hard to find one with a good battery.

Really interesting stuff Ryan. My wife and I like this car and came close to buying one last year. However the range was the ultimate showstopper and we opted to hold fire and wait for the next wave of EVs to come through in2019/20. Perhaps it would be worth waiting a while longer. There might be a new EV that's right for you and if not they could push done the prices of used ones.

Sheetal Shah absolutely. What’s nice to know is the range of the 30kwh would work for us so any extra is a bonus. I would be happy with a 40kwh Leaf and have no issues with the BMS so perhaps a wait for that to become affordable would be a good option.

Its 129 ps very peppy ev. I feel if you don't give sudden acceleration and do content 50 to 60 miles you can easily do 200km with 10 percent reserve. Yes we have to cool in tropical climate so air-condition would reduce 10 percent range. Since its a budget ev they fixed the optimum regen. You cannot change. But you have sports mode. When u charge from low, how many kWh does it put in to 100%. Reason I ask is I bought a 30kwh leaf and noticed it says about 24kwh to 100%. 🙄. Is there suppose to be 5-6kwh reserved when it's low. Just seems odd. I did a test run and got 4.5miles per kwh and I ended up at 99.3miles with 8% left. But if it were a full 30kwh doing those mpkwh, it would be alot more miles. Even a 30kwh doing 4.0 miles per kwh should give 120 By the way, it only had 4000 miles on clock, so was pretty new at a 67 plate. It's always been like this since I bought it. I've asked to test drive a 40kwh, to see what I achieve. Don't want nissan selling 30kwh battery's as a 24 and a 40 as a 30 lol

Long term range is my biggest concern. I have the option to buy my 2016 30kWh LEAF SL for $12,900, but I'm having serious second thoughts since moving to San Diego from Seattle last August. The car has 23,000 mi on it, and according to LeafSpy the battery state of health is currently at 89.3%. I purchased it roughly 33 months ago and 23K miles seems pretty low considering the SOH of the battery. I love the car, but I worry that in the warmer climate of San Diego it's going to degrade even faster. Even if I average a loss of 10% every 36 months, I could be looking at a range of around 80 mi in three more years. And, given that my current commute is 67 mi round trip I'm not sure what to do exactly. I'm considering other EVs with active battery cooling, OR just buying the car and selling it in three more years.

I’d hang on to see what VW do on the 8th of May with the ID. I’ve seen prices quoted in the press of £27k before incentives for the base model, so that’s £23.5k for a claimed 200mile range car. Even if that’s not for you it should lower the prices of other EV’s (and the second hand market).

@@EVOpinion I would say around 250 miles in total, some spirited driving with the roof down so not much in the way of good aerodynamics. I often drive across France, usually covering around 250 to 300 miles in a day. Spot on - we bought our 24kWh Leaf as our second car and it has become our main car too. We're now just about to trade in our ICE for a 30kWh - and hopefully, in a year or so, our 24kWh to a 40kWh. Just can't stand driving the ICE.

They were a huge bargain 'til the autumn of 2018 - drivethedeal and carwow could get them for £20k. I got my B250e from DTD in 2017 for £20k just before they stopped making them - great car but would struggle to manage 80 winter miles even using the range boost button (allowing it to charge to 31-32kWh usable) due to the liquid thermal management and lack of heat pump heating. You can still get 36kWh eGolf for just over £25k on drivethedeal and 42kWh i3 for £28k from new-car-discount.com if you're feeling flush...

I say if you haven't bought the 30 kW hour one yet see if there is a place you can plug in your 3 pin adapter at other end of 40 mile 1 way commute and use the 24 kW Nissan Leaf until a 40 kW drops down into your price range Or just keep using the wife's ice car for that particular commute until the 40 kW is in your price range Either way I say hold off for a 40 kW Nissan Leaf.

A better car for now. But the average Leaf looses 7% capacity a year. If you got home with 6% left this time. By next winter, between the cold and extra heater use. You would not be able to complete the trip.

exactly. At least you have much better (lower) used prices in the UK than the USA. I'll run my 2008 honda fit into the ground, the longer it lasts the better options i'll have in the used market for a good EV as they are improving so quickly year over year at the moment. The depreciation on these things are pretty poor accordingly as each year older one is giving up a bunch of features. For the clever used buyer though this can be good for us looking to pick up deals to hang onto. These EVs will last longer than the average ICE car so I'm super happy to pick up a nice 3-5 year old EV just like I have always done with ICE cars over the years. The sweet spot in the depreciation curve.
