answers to common questions, starter was cranked no more then 60 seconds then cooled down 15 min between tries, engine spun by hand, oil was clean, l used an oil/gas mix poured into the carb then cranked, the valves were not seating at 1st , so it took a while for the compression to come back, the bus is just for parts to save my other buses. the rusted panals are junk so l did not care about using a crow bar on them, the bus was parked back in 1986 do to being too rusty for the road, and last thanks to everyone who watched, if l knew this video was going to go viral l would have put more effort into the filming,

What gives VW engine's that hallmark sound?
@cardboardboxification
@cardboardboxification 7 жыл бұрын
14598175 mostly the muffler, probably compression, and cam duration, maybe fan noise and being air cooled no water around the cylinders adding to the mix

What I was trying to say is that just about any starter motor will overheat when cranked excessively. Every vehicle I have owned or operated should not have the starter motor cranked over for more than 15-20 seconds to prevent overheating, then let the motor cool down for a bit.

My first car was A 1979Volkswagen 4 door panel van type 2 second generation , I was 14 years old when it was given to me , living in Puerto Rico . Born and raised there , passed on to me by my father but then sold, two years later right before we moved here to The US . I’m now 44 . This vid reminds me of that 1st car, I should say 1st van I was given . I can’t believe how easily theses VW van/buses can resurrect from so many years of inactivity literally frozen in time. I can’t help also but to wonder as I watch this vid, if my 1st van still alive or has she bitten the dust for good .

Anyone else instantly recognise the sound of the engine? I drove a VW van with the air cooled engine in 77-78. Man the memories came flooding back!! It was a gorgeous van, nearly as gorgeous as my then girlfriend. Unfortunately, she dumped me & I got another van, a Ford Escort. Thanks for sharing from Scotland.

It rather sounded like a stationary engine when it started to fire but it eventually kicked onto all four. It just needed a bit of fire to get the stuck valve moving again. If that is a factory rebuilt engine that hasn't done much between being put in and the bus getting parked it should be a good motor. A decent service and I reckon it'll run as good as new...

That's a really strong steel rope and that pulling motor is really powerful. Even loading it is such a great task in itself. A big errand taking it and then starting it. Volkswagen obviously had to fit engine at the most difficult to reach place and you reached it. Worth a lot of appreciation.

Great video. I had a red 71 brand new I bought when I got out of the Army. Did a cross country trip in it. Melted a piston on the PA turnpike near Greensberg after a routine VW 6000 mile service appointment where the mechanic forgot to tighten the oil drain plug, thereby causing the engine to all but seize up. Stayed in The General Green Hotel for a week while the local VW dealer there rebuilt the engine and told me what caused the problem. I still remember they charged me $75 for new plugs, gaskets and oil none of which were included in the warranty. I'm still peed over it.

We have an old trash pile on our property that I didn't know about until a few years ago. One day I was down in the brush and noticed this junk pile. Now we'd been living here for a good 40 years, and before that, no one had been using that place for 10 or 20 years so the old incandescent light bulb I found, sitting on top of some rusted stuff, was just sitting there exposed to wind, rain and snow for a good 50 years or more. I brought the light bulb into the house, screwed it into a light socket and flipped it on. That light bulb still worked! It was one of the most amazing events of my life. I mean that junk pile was in amongst small trees that had been growing up on that stuff for decades and decades. Nobody had gone down there for many decades and it was totally overgrown. Well I guess you would suspect I'm making it up but it really did happen. The light bulb worked for a few months and then quit on me.

I'm glad KZfaq suggested one of your videos again a few days ago. I watched this one over a year ago and didn't even remember your name. Then, after fifteen videos and the VW bus connection, it dawned on me I'd seen you before Mustie 1. I've watched close to 20 in the last few days. Having a great time. Thanks for the vids. You even got me going on recovery of an old Murray riding mower I gave my son and after a few years it quit, so I gave him another used one I had. I got the old Murray Auto Riding Mower home today, listened to a Cushman Scooter video on the way home. Cheers.

Even I, a complete automotive dummy could fix things on it. My gas pedal cable broke once, and for a month or two, my "pedal" was my arm out the window pulling a fishing line that ran to the carburetor, lol. At least I think that's what it was..... I always enjoy these adventures ! Reminds me of the projects I' was involved in over the years of course as a young one we didnt have all the high tech gear or nowledge often we used a hillbilly tow system that was a heavy duty chain Fed thru a 8' pipe that we bolted onto the bumpers the pipe in theory allowed the tow vehicle to help brake the vehicle being towed as long as the driver kept the car in line with the front car After too many close calls i did wind up buying a actual tow bar that Was set up fo a VW but could wok on other Foreign cars with some Adapters and grade 8 bolts i actually towed a MG over 100 miles with it and still own the bar today like you its pulled many VW types very well

NICE! For the fun of it, I've gotten junk yard 8-tracks to play before. Looked to be in about the same condition as the yours. Of course, I didn't just pop them in, they need to be opened up, unwound and rewound back into the cartridge. A little rough here and there but didn't sound as bad as your would imagine. Hope you save the stereo, might be worth restoring as well.

VHS or Beta Giving the throttle some pumpage is a good idea though when starting an engine that hasn't run for a while. Obviously don't redline it if it starts but it may need a certain amount of throttle to stay running and then later it will probably idle on its own.
@Shane-Singleton
@Shane-Singleton 6 жыл бұрын
VHS, Not sure if you mean that Mustie does this or other people. He's probably pouring 2 stroke fuel right down the throat of the carb like he does for most of his starts so it may be revving on its own since there's probably little to no actual metering happening from the carb. That and the carb is probably full of junk and useless anyway without a cleaning/rebuild. At least he uses two stroke fuel which has some lubrication built into it. That and given the fact that after that many cranks there should be oil circulated throughout as long as the pump is good. I know for sure that Mustie always checks the oil. I totally agree though with people jumping up and down on the throttle and trying to rev the crap out of it the second it fires. First there's likely no fuel in the carb float bowl anyway, So even if it had a working accelerator pump it it wouldn't squirt anything. Seems like every old carb has a hard accelerator pump these days so it'd still be a moot point. lol. Now if somebody filled the float bowl up then they could potentially use the throttle to rev it. But... I'd hope that if they were smart enough to actually fill the bowl that they'd know better. Well...... Who am I kidding. The world is full of people that don't always do good research before acting. lol. Either way.. Love Mustie's first start videos.

I have been there several times, similar buses, same tools, love this video! There are a few 100 $$$ in parts in that old girl from 1970. A few things are lacking from the interior photos that we always found in buses from the northwest, namely a few lego bricks, a couple of spent .22 casings and some kind of paperwork for something from Les Schwab tires.....(and some trash from McDonalds).

I worked VW dealerships in LA Ca. during the 1960s and '70s. I specialised in Type 3s and Type 4s as well as all fuel injection. I studied Bosch fuel injection under one of the German engineers who developed it for Robert Bosch Co in Germany. I was the first VW mechanic in the USA to attend school on the 411 and 412 model. I will never forget our Type 2 specialist, Bart Fillman, a long hair bearded hippy who new more about buses than anybody in the western USA. When he first tried a job at almost every VW dealership in the LA area he was refused employment. Finally he got a professional short hair wig fitted and Ogner VW hired him. After he had been there about two months he came in without the wig. By that time management realized how much he knew and had no problems with his hair. I loved working on VWs but wanted to go back to Japan, my wife's home, so I left VW and went to Toyota for training. When I went back to Japan I worked at a Japanese garage where I was paid very well as the European auto specialist rarely working on Toyotas.

Decades ago I got a 1967 split window VW van and traded a modified Yamaha RD 400 for it. They thought it had serious engine trouble, hence the cheap trade, but after I limped off and drove around the corner, I pulled over, swapped the two plug wires they had on wrong, and headed for the freeway! The brake shoes love to rust to the drums if they sit too long!

@@mustie1 Nope it was too slow and had 6 volt to 12 volt issues like the wipers once turned on went so fast they would not shut off. Also, seen a few that were wrecked and didn't like the idea of my legs being in the front portion of a crush zone. I upgraded to a newer one with a 2.0 type 2 engine and was going to swap in a Buick 215 I was building with a Kennedy adapter. I was planning to fabricate a round radiator up front making it look like it was a spare tire. CA did not include my model year in the new smog exemption and I eventually sold it. Just last year I got around to selling the 215 as it only needed the cam and pistons, but every other common upgrade was done. I opened up the oil passages, added pointless ignition, powder coated & rebuilt the water pump/front cover, distributor, starter and alternator a bright yellow. Did you know that the Audi FOX transmission will fit in there, (HUGE GEAR RATIO SELECTION FOR EVERY GEAR AND THE FINAL DRIVE RATIO) only the axles turn the wrong way, so on one with those reduction boxes vans it would turn the correct way! I thought about making reduction like boxes (both gears the same size so no reduction) to mount to an Audi automatic with the tall gear ratio and running that 200HP Buick 215. I even collected 4 sets of reduction boxes for the gear parts. Lack of machining resources or fund killed that idea!
