Anyone who thinks it stands for Isis, Horus, Set (not Seth; that was Adam and Eve's third son) must think the ancient Egyptians spoke and wrote modern English. This Christogram has been in use since before anyone ever wrote an English or Egyptian word with the Latin alphabet.

You might also find particularly in older catholic crosses the letters INRI which mean "Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudeorum" (Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews) which was the mocking sign put on the cross by the roman executioners.

There's also a famous legend that Constantine had a vision of the cross on the eve of a crucial battle, and adopted it as his sign, with the motto, "IN HOC SIGNO VINCES." ("In this sign you will conquer.") So the "in hoc signo" (in Latin) and the first three letters of Jesus' name became a handy little double symbol. Neat, huh?

BTW, technically, Constantine's motto would have been in Greek: "ἐν τούτῳ νίκα" (In this, conquer), which totally doesn't fit with the IHS theme. Oh well...

That symbol is pure catholic and they took it from pagan gods. I= Isis. H= Horus. S= Seth. All pagan gods. I have been researching this for years and you would be amazed what people do in the name of religion that God hates. As God said: in vein do they worship me. People read your Bible and put away false doctrine.

Horus, written in Greek, doesn't begin with an "H" Your claim can only hold true if Speakers of modern English were writing Egyptian words with the Latin alphabet in the 4th century AD.

Why are the Iota and Eta in Greek but the Sigma in English? Something doesn't make sense here. I understand this to be Latin not Greek. Iesus Homineum Salvator is Jesus the savior of men.

Right sure, because the horizontal bar of the cross is not big enough to write his whole name is it? Hmmm, lets get that magnifying glass out again shall we. Then explain to us the sun wheel (solar wheel), complete with the heathen obelisk from Egypt, in the middle of St Peter's cube, or the pagan sun dial with male/female symbols, or the use of magic to perform cannibalism and blood drinking of a wafer with the "X" or IO or Horus/Apollo on it, or the worship and praying of intercessions of Mary, or the reasons the Catholic Church murdered and tortured Christians for *having a Bible they could read in their own language*. Oh, i have more... but lets start there. Jer. 43:13 “He will also shatter the obelisks of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt; and the temples of the gods of Egypt he will burn with fire.”
