I got this digital piano with the pedals removed from the stand, screws and a spring in a plastic bag. Someone decided that something was wrong, but I didn't find anything. The circuit was traced, and the operation of the pedals was explained in the video. I hope it can be useful to someone.

Thanks so much for posting this video. I was easily able to fix mum's clavinova by jiggling the pedal connection once I realised the default is sustain for disconnected pedals. She was going to call a specialist. I have impressed my mum by saving the day.

Thank you for this video! I was all ready to take my piano apart to fix the pedals which stopped working when my husband moved it to another room. Then I saw the cable attaching it to the back of the piano at 5:32 and thankfully it was not properly attached. Now my pedals work and I don't have to take my piano apart!

Thanks! My problem is that the damper pedal is quite noisy; thanks to your video I now know what to expect when I open it up. PS by listening to the sound your keys make, your piano might also be due for a replacement of the felt strips. There’s a good how-to video somewhere here on KZfaq - shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Hi @feedbackloop. I finally fixed my problem!! all thanks to this video. I owe you one man!!. The problem was in the "joint" (a.k.a rigid soldering) between the "little board" that holds the potentiometer and the main board of the unit. I fixed it by separating both boards and simply soldering 3 cables. Not the greatest soldering job, but it solved the problem by removing the "rigidity" of the union between the "little board" and the "main board". That way, I make it less prone to separating due to "pedal pounding" (I do that a lot). I think this unit has a design problem. They should use more flexible wires to join the potentiometer with the board, not just soldering material. I say that if you buy a new one, its only a matter of time before it starts loosening up again. Thanks to you I saved 120 dollars + packaging expenses + stress (I did spend about 30 bucks in soldering and cleaning stuff... but it felt pretty damm great!!!) Thank you again and congratulations!!

@amihanov
@amihanov 2 ай бұрын
@@mvmarchiori Yes! But now I think it was a different problem all along. Maybe the soldering was unnecessary. Now I think I was wrong. The real problem might have been the proximity of the piece that moves the wheel to the wheel. Like it slowly moves away while you play until it's too far out... So when I sold the cables back then I also may have replaced that piece closer to the wheel... Next thing I will do if I ever have the problem again is simply reach down my arm under the piano and press the piece against the wheel I guess...

I accidentally broke my pedal when I was moving my keyboard to my living room. When I pressed down the pedal, its not holding the key that I'm playing. Is there a solution to this??
@nottipiglet
@nottipiglet 2 жыл бұрын
I would hasten to guess why that someone thought the pedal was broken. At around 2.10, you can see the lever system working when the pedal is depressed. The parts of the lever system needs to sit exactly right because it operates the potentiometer, which is very sensitive. Years of usage tend to change the position of the lever. In the wrong position, the sustain may be in the half pedal position when fully depressed. By taking it apart and putting it back, you may have put it back into the right position, so the problem is gone.

My problem with my CLP is when I use it as a controller with Logic, sometimes the damper doesn't return to zero. It gets stuck between 1 and 10 so Logic sustains the notes. Watching this makes me think I may just need to strengthen the spring or see if I can adjust the potentiometer. Thank you.

The pot is 10k B linear. The right pedal is Sustain or Damper. The middle pedal is Sostenuto. Apart from these MASSIVE errors this video was quite helpful.
@feedback-loop
@feedback-loop 5 жыл бұрын
How do you know that this pot is linear? Based on marking? It can be confusing since there is no standard, and different manufacturers mark differently. See www.potentiometers.com/potcomFAQ.cfm?FAQID=29 As far as I remember (I am not so sure now), I checked the mid point myself, and it was far from 5K, which means that it is most probably log. Perhaps I should have mentioned that and the problem with confusing markings. Regarding the pedal names. They are also confusing. Perhaps I should have called the middle one "sostenuto" because it is a commonly used name for it in the US, but in Italian (and all this piano terminology came from Italian) sostenuto means sustain. And the right pedal, that is called either damper or sustain in the US, is called "risonanza" (resonance) or "forte" (loud, strong) in Italian. So I chose to call it damper to avoid confusion between sustain and sostenuto. So, with respect, I don't think I have made MASSIVE errors. Perhaps, I should have mentioned these differences in terminology, but it is hard to even remember to be so explicit about such details. I do appreciate your feedback. It helps to be aware of the confusing points and to try to be more careful next time. Thanks.

One question please, i bought my Roland Piano HP603, i was playing through my headset, and felt warm so i took off my jacket and suddenly i heared very weird noise through the head set, quickly i realized that it happened because of the static electricity from the jacket, i switch off the piano. I put it on again, and i couldnt say wheather there is a damage has happened, am worrying a lot in general, and am wondering if really (this happening) my winter jacket could really damage the piano because of the static electricity?

Feedbackloop, I have a similar problem but can't get any of the pedals to work. Originally the left (soft) pedal would work and I could switch the sustain function over to the left pedal (and that also worked), but after I took the pedals out and cleaned the connections with alcohol, that left pedal stopped working. I've ordered and received a new circuit board for the pedal but it came without the potentiometer. Question: could you repair the electrical functioning of these pedals for me? Your knowledge of these circuits seems much better than mine. Thank you. Rick

You must be joking. What science? It just supports the pedals so that they would not hang in the air and the beam they mounted on would not bend and break. Adjust the bolt so that it touches the floor firmly supporting the pedals.

The 860 also has this weird variable sustain function for the damper pedal that changes the amount of sustain by 8 step graduations. So you can sustain notes by varying lengths. Essentially the further you press the pedal the longer it sustains. I don’t like it at all.
@feedback-loop

Perhaps, you mean the damper, which is the only variable control. The other two pedals are simple on-off switches.

@@roadguide123 Unfortunely, I could not solve the problem. As a last resort I contacted the only official Yamaha workshop here in Belgium (and in Europe). After a week of waiting and a diagnosis, it was a problem with a chipset on the motherboard. The way this chipset was soldered to the motherboard did not allow to replace it. Moreover, Yamaha no longer supplies parts for this type of piano (motherboard). I have since bought a new piano.

Hello!! I think you are very close to saving me. I have this problem with the damper pedal (that I use and abuse) and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I noticed it has a potentiometer. How to I know if it's working ?? Where can I get the cable you bought ? I already own a tester. It's from a Clavinova CLP 230 but I think it's the same Yamaha proprietary I don't know much about electronics but I'm a hard working type.
@feedback-loop
@feedback-loop 7 жыл бұрын
You are asking how do I know if the pot is working. I showed in the video how I tested it. The mechanism doesn't rotate it all the way, but in the range from about 1K to 9K. The pot was 10K logarithmic in my model. You need to make sure that the pot doesn't go open circuit in any spot of that range. Perhaps, the pot needs cleaning. Or, perhaps, it is worn out and needs to be replaced. It might be tricky to find a replacement of the same size and shape, and you need to do soldering. Are you asking about that little piece of flat cable with a connector matching the connector on the pedal board @2:24? This was just for convenience of testing, not essential. You may want to try calling Yamaha technical support. I had good experience before buying replacement keys from them. The problem might be that they can sell only the whole pedal assembly, which can be expensive. Or they might not have parts for an old model at all.
@amihanov
@amihanov 7 жыл бұрын
FeedbackLoop actually, I don't mind asking for the replacement. It's about 120 bucks. I wasn't even sure if that would solve my problem. I just finished testing using my newly acquired service manual and I confirmed there's an intermittent problem with the damper pedal (I'm not crazy thank god). Sostenuto and the other one tested fine. It has to be the por because it's not all that dirty. Do you think I could try disassembly (nothing to lose after all), and cleaning up ? Not sure if it can be removed.

120 bucks for what? Replacement pedal assembly from Yamaha? You might try cleaning the pot with a contact cleaner (preferably with lubricant) if the pot has an opening in the housing (I don't remember this). Something like I showed here (that pot had an opening in the housing): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rNKVeKadv9Ono6M.html If that doesn't help, you may wan to try taking it apart, but that, most probably, will require careful de-soldering.

I have no idea about the pedals in CLP 840. What do you see? Some other arrangement for the damper (like a on-off switch or something)? If someone removed it, I would imagine that it must be obvious: a vacant place for it on the board and no mechanical link from the pedal to anything.
