I’m amazed by your accuracy. This is probably the most skilled letter routing I’ve seen. We’re you letting the router base float a bit to control the depth? Cuz I thought the base wasn’t touching the wood. Also, what bit do you recommend for Arial in all caps, which has defined 45-degree corners at the ends of the letters? I’m a beginner and badly need guidance :D

Thank you Patrick, I am humbled by your compliments. To answr your question directly the font doesn't matter as much as the size of the letter. By your question I'm assuming you're talking about inset letters. If so I wouldn't worry to much about having super sharp inside corners. I you are you can use a the small detail carving liner to get into the tight corners and then go back and carve the rest with maybe the profile bit if that appropriate for the size of letters you're carving. Hope this makes sense. You can always email me directly if I need to clarify this for you. eric@makeawoodsign.com.

Great video explanation Eric. I finished my first 1/2" letter test run. I did a simple quote I found on Google images. At a distance, it looked fine. However, at close inspection, my lines were a bit uneven on certain letters. I discovered my biggest problem was when I "re-traced" my lines. I see you run the bit back thru your cut to clean out debris or make touch up's. When I do it, I tend to cut more on one side of the line due to the little resistance I assume. I also tend to pick up speed when cutting when I should slow it down. I will keep at it. Thanks for all your video's and great router bits.

Do you have any tips on how to put a designs on ebony or just some other dark already stained wood? Some of the designs I do have such fine lines that I can’t really cut them out into stencils. So currently I lay the print out on the wood and tape up all the edges to secure the paper in place and then go REALLY slow with a dremel and trace the outline. I remove the paper and then try to fill in everything with the dremel or with a router. Know of an easier route?

The term profile bit means something completely different in the UK. Its like a bit you use to profile edges. Has anyone any ideas what the UK equivalent is to the US profile bit?
@oldave100
@oldave100 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the confusion. It means something totally different here in the US as well. This "Profile Bit" bit that we use my father Dave designed over 40 years ago. He named it our profile bit because of what we use it for. So that is our name for it. There are other companies that have taken his design (long story) and sell it under their own part number. We also sell them on our website makeawoodsign.com as well. If you have an other questions please let me know eric@makeawoodsign.com

It depends on if you want to do inset (black lettering) or outset (wood lettering with black background) For inset 4" letters, you can use the 90 degree for the whole thing.
