I've been a trucker for 7 years, I much rather do a reset then run off recaps.
@MrFriday83

Here's the thing, if you're only working 9 hours a day, 16 hours in waking hours you're awake leaves you 7 hours every single day to recharge, shower, enjoy a decent stay at a hotel ECT ECT, laundry every day of the week. Where if you're running 11 14 hours everyday you have enough time to go poop, maybe just maybe a shower. I always understood the math of the hours but personally I get burnt out way to quickly working long hours every day only to reset in a truck stop ohhhh joy! Also, in the real world with how shippers and receivers (not unloaded or loading yourself) you'll find yourself recapping hours naturally anyways. And once it gets to low time for a reset. But my vote is working 9 hours will keep you happier longer, and thats worth more than the money

@@cruzolivas6319 That's horrible advice, absolutely horrible. That trainer is a selfish self benafitting asshole. He gets paid more for all the extra driving you do. If you go back and need retraining and the trainer is forcing you, call him out on it. If he doesn't back down call safety and they will deal with him and find you a new trainer. How it really works is. YOU WORK till you're not comfortable for me its usually 9 hours of driving, and 12 hours clocked on. This allows me to always go to bed at the same time, wake up the same time and have a few hours to relax before going to bed. If you can only do 7 drive and 9 hours clock in that's all you can do. One of the most important things is to have the same sleeping schedule don't mess with that. Depression kicks in, fatigue, anxiety everything goes downhill. That's a major nono in my book. Let's state how it really is, communication is key, if the delivery window is too tight let them know. If they bark back say these exact words in writing "I don't feel safe promising this delivery doing it within that time window" if they don't shut up you can sue. They won't push back at this point. Coming in I used to think everyone was the boss, this isn't true. The only boss is you,. You are the captain so what's comfortable with you. If you need 4 hours to relax before bed take 4 hours to relax. Need to sleep in, you sleep in. But make sure you communicate if you promised a delivery, you'll usually know the night before if you need extra sleep so place a new ETA

If you run it right, you can be just as productive running recaps over doing a 34, it really just depends on how you run and when you run. Running only days, you will be better off running and doing a 34. But if you drive nights. A recap can work very well since you are splitting up the hours you drive over 2 different days.

I think there are many variables not being considered. For example : if you’re not running long haul and in a short say 300-500 mile radius of your house I’d run recaps if running long haul I’d do resets. A lot of flat bedders tell me their shippers and receivers aren’t open on weekends which lends itself for resets and renders recaps impossible. There’s always variables to everything you just have to do what works for you

I believe if we are talking about short term or long term. From experience I believe resets is better for the driver. If you factor in burnout.
@Lobosonmision19819
@Lobosonmision19819 Жыл бұрын
So I look at the extremes. 14hrs for 5days will net you 70hrs. Or 8.5hrs a day every day. If you really do log your logs right the driver that runs recap will have more downtime each day to better handle personal tasks and get a better rest when they are sleeping I believe. The driver that do resets will be burned out sooner. And would really require some real downtime for about a week or month then they’re be back at it again, and I believe from my past experience that burnout occurs on average around 3-5yrs. In my opinion it’s really about how you like to work. You are right about resets are easier for dispatchers and planners. But if you self dispatch recaps are better because you can choose your loads based on time you are receiving back. Resets are also good for drivers that like to drive during the day only. Recaps are good for drivers that like to night drive

Very good explanation. But I still feel dumb when I pull out of the truck stop after only 28 minutes because i didnt watch the clock. Lol. Did you know you can legally stay on duty more than14 hrs, you just cant drive anymore after 14. For example, before my wife got her cdl she had her permit. I'd drive 8 or 9, then she could drive 8 or 9 more. I had to be "on duty" in the passenger seat, but trooper said "no problem, stay on duty as long as you want, just cant drive." Still burned up my 70 real quick, so reset days were more common. DOT doesnt care how long you work in a day, just have the first 14 hr window to drive. Then 10 hrs off.

The 8.75 hours/day driver is allowed to work 7 days a week, not 6 days a week. This means that that driver can drive every day of the year if possible, while the 66-hour driver can only work for 6 days a week if they leave the 4 hours on the table each week (according to you). The answer to which system makes more sense (or money) depends on the data for each system. A lot of things can happen to interrupt either schedule system.

in hotshot, recaps are really not profitable. If you want to make money, then you gotta run and use your full 70. For me i always to a 34 on sunday and then run hard for the rest of the week and repeat. Recaps are really only good for dry van dock bumpers who may sit at a dock for hours on end off duty, thus not spending a whole day working. Thats where split sleepers and stuff also come in handy. but long story short for us, run the full 70 and and use your full day. Besides with recaps you are always fighting the clock and if anything slows you down, it can really screw your day.

From gathering this it just makes sense to drive for as long as you can depending on what mishaps have happened throughout the day and week. Sometimes its hard to do just 8 hours a day like i said depending on the problems us trucker face daily. If your held at a shipper/receiver for hours driving 8 hours could put u behind even further. I stay off duty when I’m not driving or out strapping, if im sitting to get loaded or unloaded its off duty. Thats how u maximize your 70 for the week stay on duty all the time like dot wants you to, and you’ll be restarting early every week not making any money.

Once I’m back in the truck waiting for them to pull everything off, I’m Off-Duty until they are finished. I’m sure I’m missing something here, but it seems you forgot to account for the 136 hours of reset time in your 28 days. @jamieblaze6514
@jamieblaze6514 2 жыл бұрын
When you run 34hr reset, you can actually pick up a couple hours each day because you only go off duty for 10 hours... in a perfect world where you just drive and never get delayed... you have 11hrs driving, 15m pre trip, 30m break hopefully unloading or fueling etc., and 15m post trip/ end of day, drop trailer etc. So you have a perfect day every day, best case scenario of 11hrs driving and 1hr on line 4. That's 12 hours on, 10hrs off (22hrs so far), you then start your next driving period still on day 1! So you actually get 14 hours on duty with 10 hours between(shift 1 =12hr+ off duty 10hr + shift #2 for 2hrs =24hrs) So you get 14 hours in 5 days exactly 14x5=70hrs. Day 6 is restart hrs(all 24hrs). Day 7 is 10hrs of reset still, and at 10am day 7, you start driving, sleeping 10, and you get an extra 2 hours after your 10 hour break! Hooray! 14 hours on day 7! The formula keeps going that way for as long as you want... so in 8 days, all but 1 day is 14 hours of on duty time. 7x14=98 hours of making money 💰 vs the same 8 days X 8.75 hours = 70 hours making money. 98-70=28 hours of more money making than recap. Of course, that's a perfect world scenario, but the variables that cause delays will equally effect the driver regardless of which method they use. If you're gonna get stuck somewhere, start your 10 hour nappy time if you can... but when you're stuck, you're stuck... do your best to be efficient with your fuel and potty breaks, your drop times, and time them to match up to your 30m break on the"8hr clock"... hope this helps!

No the 70 hrs is on duty and driving combined. 11hrs of drive time in a 14 hour window. So if you work pit, fueling, inspections and loading unloading, scaling all has to be logged on duty drive time is anytime where the drive is in gear forwards or backwards. Even traffic, wrecks, construction. Now if your at a shipper with a secured yard with fence and guard on duty you can use on duty yard move. To save your drive time. If you maxed out each day to 14 that’s a five day window before you get to 70 hrs. 34 off Sunday morning you will have a restart and could hammer down if you stopped Friday night by 8 pm

But is it? R u going to take my word for it? Best not to. So instead open that little green bible and and confirm for yourself no offense btw. Its just best practice.

@@blueridgeocean 🤔 we need to see if they can ban PC for you. I guess it’s the companies vehicle so they have the final say in it. I guess they are trying to save money on fuel and other off duty liabilities ? I see PC is legal in the green bible during 34 hour reset as long as u are not extremely tired.

After 66 hours you burn up a day and a half to reset. So to get 66 X 4 = 264 hours with 4 resets you are at 30 days (29 days and 16 hours). 8.75 X 30 is 262.5 which is only 1.5 hours less.

@@DavidWilson-qw1to well technically he didn’t calculate it right you start work Monday at 7 that 7-9 each day if you tan your 14 each day that’s 70 hrs in five days Friday at 9 pm Sunday at 7 am you have a reset plus an extra day on that week so technically you can have 84 in a week six weeks later you would be starting on a Monday again giving you 84 hrs a week

Your math is wrong . One day off you can times by 3.5 weeks vs recaps times by 4 or 26 days vs 28 days. In a week restart at 4095 miles vs 4080 miles recap, 34 hr wins in a week but recaps wins for the month
@TowPiglet

I just re watched the video I said 6 days of driving 1 day for restart. 6 x 11 = 66 66 hours a week x 4 weeks a month = 264 hours You can also do 66 x 52 weeks a year = 3,432 hours annually Where as on recaps if you do 8.75 x 365 = 3,194 Whether is weekly or annually restarts are better and more productive

AIRTABLE - Alex is there a way to post or send a link for the new hotshot template you are using, including the fuel tab and the formulas you use for that? I watched a video you had and noticed it was much nicer than the original template, which I started using a few weeks ago. I really like it but I like the direction you went with the fuel and such. I am going to be taking on an owner operator this summer and I really want to get full-fledged on this airtable automation the best I can. Thanks and stay safe!

The guy who never restarts doesn’t even get to drive all 8.75 hours because on duty time for pre-trip, loading, fueling, etc. comes out those 8.75 hours. The restart guy has an additional 4 hours per week for logging on duty (66 hours for driving + 4 extra hours = 70). That said, it’s unlikely you could actually run every last minute of drive time week after week, but if you can average 10+ hours of driving daily the restart is best

so if i get to a terminal in let’s say 7hrs and have 1.45 left and then break for 3hrs because waiting for trailers does that 3hrs im waiting count against my 8.75 even though im just waiting. it sounds like it does the way you worded it but i just wanted to make sure im hearing you correctly. if so i should just log off and then log back in after trailers are ready to go? hopefully i’m getting it lol

I am pretty new to OTR and this video has helped. The only question still in my mind, because I know people who swear by recaps and people who always do resets, is that you are only talking about the 11 hour clock. The other day it took 5 hours to get loaded. I ran out my 14 before my 11. So when you consider the load/unload times is recaps still better?
@TowPiglet
@TowPiglet 2 жыл бұрын
No recaps are worse because you’ll get less drive time for the month. Also it’s rare that load times are that long, usually it’s less than the 3 hours so it never gets into the drive time

@jobinglobin

I know I am commenting on an old post, but I really want to try to make sure I understand this. So in your easy number example with 11 hours per day, aren’t you leaving 4 hours on the table? So if the guy running recaps decides to run the same 11 hours per day, but then on day 7 run a short day just shy of the 4, say 3.5, doesn’t he get 11.5 back at midnight to use on day 8 (11 comes back + .5 left over from the original 70)? If this works he is ahead in hours for the week and the month. Not trying to nitpick, but because you are saying “absolutely” that reset is preferable, it seems to me that it is not as clear cut and that recap can actually come out ahead.

Restart is ( IMHO ) absolutely a necessary benefit for Any Driver ! At home if possible ! Besides , sooner or later , You're GOING TO falsify Your log ! Let Me explain , If You fuel at a fuel stop , it's not the easiest thing to do to fuel , and go inside to pay ( yes paying IS an " ON DUTY not driving " event ) ... then You're going to use the bathroom , maybe get something to eat & drink too ! I never went back to log off duty after paying for My fuel !! EDIT : Logging on " paper ( practicing w/notebook paper ) works GREAT , but in the " real world " not so much ! Murphy's Law comes into play ( when You least expect it & can least afford it ) ! It seems to hit You when You're under that hot load W/ no time to spare ! Like that time You broke down & had to be towed ( can't log that " off duty " ) , but it eats up those hours ! There's any number of things that eat up hours ( ANYTHING to do w/ truck , trailer , or load , ALL must be logged to the satisfaction of D.O.T. & if You're a company Driver , Your company ) ! The only loads I've ever handled in about 15 minutes ( on either end of trip ) is for drop & hook ! Too many 15 minute entries on that log will draw unwanted attention to You at the scale house ( if You have any paperwork with You that contradict that log ... You could get a ticket , or maybe shut down 10 to 34 hrs. ) ....
