35+ Years of Outrun - 3D Turbo SPDX Edition!!! My new documentary style Retro Review video looking at the entire OutRun Series and my love for it, from childhood to 46-year-old-hood. Unless specifically mentioned on screen, everything here is either video capture of me playing on the original hardware or an emulator or is external video I recorded myself at various different arcades (even the '80's' stuff at the start).

I enjoy your perspective on the game and it's always nice to see someone doing real retrospectives on these older games instead of quick superficial click-bait. OutRun 2019 may have started life as a non-OutRun game, but it was developed by Hertz who did the MD port of the original. 2019 reuses a lot of the same code from that port as well, so in a way, it is an OutRun spinoff via blood transfusion lol.

Another great video dude. OutRun is definitely one of Sega's best IPs. Sega should do a compilation pack. SEGA RACERS- Virtua Racing, Daytona, Sega Rally, Scud Race, Out Run 2, Le Mans 24, Ferrari Challenge F355 and that doesn't even cover any 2d games they could be in another compilation.

I also remember having the opoortunity to play a deluxe sit-down machine during a school trip to our capital city and trying to show my skills to my mates only to find the machine to have the japan layout and fail. honestly I never really got into outrun until somewhat more recently... I found Outrun 2006: coast 2 coast at a pawn shop for *$1USD* ! man that has to be one of my all time favorite racing games ever, SEGA basically dominates that list, no question. OR2006 was so much fun just powersliding through corners and flying past the other cars trying to make the checkpoint in the time limit, it was just so amazing! my other favorite version of the game was the Nintendo Switch SEGA AGES version. I think the only thing missing is the Ferrari license, but that just means it won't disappear when the lease on the license runs out! all the extra stuff they threw in there on top of a basically arcade-perfect port easily makes it one of my favorite SEGA AGES releases they've ever done!

Which version did you find in the pawn shop for a Buck (Xbox, PS2 or PC)? Any version of the game you find for that price is a sweet deal, but if it was the Xbox version of C2C, you have just made yourself a LOT of Money 💸 👍

Absolutely phenomenal mate, just finished all 2 hrs 45. Thoroughly enjoyed that. Doesn't surprise me PAL got Outrun on MS beforehand, it happened a lot like with Sonic 1 and 2 as well. PSG deffo trumps the FM sound unit with that one! The switch drivers megamix tune sounds like an 80/90s kids show theme (which is awesome) I really rate the switch version highly. Never got to try it on 3DS sadly! You must be glad that Daytona 2 has sort of had a home release now though in the Yakuza games! I do need to play more of my copy of Sonic and Sega All Stars Transformed as I've not unlocked the Hornet yet! oh! I can explain why the tires in the Master System version sound weird on FM! the sound effect used in the PSG version was probably hard to recreate on the puny FM chip the console has, and while the JP Master System CAN use both FM and PSG at once in theory, in practice it's not that simple... the problem here is the original FM expansion for the Mark III completely reroutes the audio, and can't use PSG sounds. thus, using PSG on an FM game completely kills compatibility with the Mark III the only software I can think of that actually uses the Master System's full audio is the BIOS screen! since it's baked into the console, Mark III compatibility is not an issue, and it helps make one of my favorite renditions of the Space Harrier theme :P
@MrThunderwing
@MrThunderwing Жыл бұрын
Interesting, I think I had heard somewhere else that the PSG and FM couldn't play at the same time easily. The Space Harrier music on the BIOS screen of the JPN SMS is something I literally only found out about a week or so ago.

Awesome :) A LOT of time being spent on the MASTER SYSTEM version 😂 Edit: re the Mega Drive version - as well as the lack of engine sounds and palette issues, the car sprite has been poorly redrawn, IMO. It just doesn't look like the Arcade vehicle, and there's no good reason for that. Mega Drive has a higher resolution than the Arcade cabinet runs at, I believe, but it's just a poorly drawn Testarossa in comparison to the original and PC Engine versions. The US Gold 16-bit ports all have a crap looking car as well. Sloppy porting all around, apart from the PC Engine version, where they actually 'get it' and understood what you'd want from a port. The Master System version is pretty much as good as you could expect from the hardware - no complaints here. Sega generally haven't treated their highly regarded Arcade games with the care and attention that they all deserve, where it came to the 16-bit era ports especially. Outrunners and Turbo outrun are a bad joke on the MD, and the Mega CD gets NOTHING but a bad port of G-Loc rebranded as After Burner III. It's a really poor show from Sega - the whole set of scaler games could have had decent Mega CD and 32X versions that would have made the Mega CD versions especially desirable around 1993. Games such as Super Monaco GP, Power Drift and especially Outrunners could have made great Mega CD and 32X games at the time, if the care and attention to their ports was taken. More reasons why gamers drifted away from Sega's consoles as the 90s progressed.

Thank you Colonel! It was a tad mildly terrifying, just because when someone's that absolutely spazzed off their tits, that early in the day, on God only knows what super strength alcoholic horror juice, there is that slight worry that they might turn a bit aggy. Luckily he didn't and twenty years later it's left me with an amusing anecdote :)

Thank you for the great video, it must have taken an age to make. Not watched all the video yet but got to the Mega Drive version. As well as the dark colours the big thing I didn't like about it was the layout of the stages. Out Run to me will always be go left to the stone arches. There was no way of changing it was there and there has never been a unofficial patch to make the layout like UK arcade layout?
@MrThunderwing
@MrThunderwing Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, this did take me quite a long time to put together... Unfortunately, I don't think there's ever been a patch for the Megadrive version of Outrun to swap it from the Japan to the international track layout.

Having grown up with OutRun and Turbo OutRun real time and playing the crap out of both of them in the arcades, I have to say, I like Turbo OutRun better and contend it's more fun to play. The graphics are more better/more detailed since it's a later release and the sense of speed is higher, especially given the turbo boost. You can't just use turbo anywhere but use it strategically for instant quick acceleration coming off of a stop or to plow through the shrubs and water obstacles without losing speed. You enjoyed Super Hang On so much with its turbo feature; not sure why you'd find the same feature on Turbo Outrun useless. Also, the upgrades to tire, engine, and turbo is a welcome addition and they really do make a difference in game play. Two awesome games that deserve their own mention when talking about super scalers are Taito's Nightstriker and Sega's own Galaxy Force II (probably the pinnacle of sprite based super scalers).
@MrThunderwing
@MrThunderwing 5 ай бұрын
The Turbo in Super Hang-On is more responsive than in Turbo Outrun - you press it when your bike builds up to a certain speed for instant Turbo and the second you release it, the turbo disengages. In Turbo Outrun you press the Turbo and you just have to let it run its course. Like I said in the video though, I didn't play Turbo Outrun until much later in life, whereas Super Hang-On was something I was playing extensively as a Teenager.

Did anyone realize the Dreamcast version's "generic red sports car" is a Ferrari F50 without rear wing?
@MrThunderwing
@MrThunderwing 4 ай бұрын
Any similarity to the F50 is purely coincidental - Sega didn't have a license to use the likeness of any Ferrari's at that point in time, it was intended, as far as Sega was concerned, to be a no name, no brand red sports car.
@HydrenXZ
@HydrenXZ 4 ай бұрын
@@MrThunderwing, although Sega didn't have a license at the time, to me it seems to be a case of "intended coincidence". The absence of rear wing makes it just different enough to make copyright issues questionable. I mean, the original OutRun featured a Testarossa - its sequel, Turbo OutRun, featured an F40. The F50 is kinda of a natural choice for a succeeding both of them. Later Nintendo releases featured an even more generic red sports car (vaguely resembling a F512M).

53:42 - nope, this is not incorrect at all, and in fact that color mod for the MD mod makes it inaccurate. The MD version uses the Japanese layout. In that layout, the Canyon stage had the teal daytime sky, but it was changed to the sunset sky in the Overseas layout version.
@MrThunderwing
@MrThunderwing Жыл бұрын
I was actually aware of the sky being a different colour in the overseas version, I don't know now why I decided to use the canyon stage as an example. The mod definitely makes the Coconut beach stage look better and more like the arcade though.
@Ashura96
@Ashura96 Жыл бұрын
@@MrThunderwing yeah for sure the Coconut Beach comparison alone does wonders. I hope the developer of the color patch makes it optional to change the color of the Canyon sky for those who want to have the sunset version. Heck maybe it's even possible to hack the game to give it the Overseas layout too.
@MrThunderwing
@MrThunderwing Жыл бұрын
@@Ashura96 Yeah, it's weird, I did read somewhere that, supposedly you can change between the overseas and Japanese track layout depending on your console region. Although I've got the MD game, I was using an emulator to get the footage and I tried changing it's region, but it didn't make any difference, it was always the Japanese track layout.
@Ashura96

@@MrThunderwing Correct - all regions of MD OutRun use the Japanese layout, so modification of the game would be required to get the Overseas layout.

Great game, great video! 1:00:26 I really wanted to do that tabletop conversion - I've done the After Burner version and put Out Run in a Tomy dashboard (see my channel for videos of both) - but the Tiger/Grandstand Tabletop versions of Out Run are becoming quite hard to get hold of now, at least in the UK.
