And if you install the distributor pointed at # 1 on the cap, you will be 180 degrees out if still dot to dot. always rotate crank one complete revolution before dropping distributor in.

Just point the rotor at #6 no need to do all that turning over finding TDC mess. If the dizzy don't drop down just back the crank up 30° point the rotor at 6 and when it turns over and falls down it will be right on the money.

Question for ya? I just installed double roller chain and its tight. the thing that's weird is if i rock crank very slighty back and forth i feel a tiny bit of play. it seems like there play between lower gear and chain. Is that normal? seems like less than a 1/8 movement. thanks

I’ve been trying to find a video of someone tapping the oil galley plugs on an 880 block with the machined surface. Are the two outer plugs 3/8? And the middle one the standard 1/4? Would be a cool video to make since there’s nothing out there. Keep up the great videos!

YES, the Vortec block had larger oil passages on each side (lifter galleries) and a standard size 1/4 pipe in the center just tap the two side passages with a 3/8 pipe tap and your in business that's what was done to the block in the video

I think people make the mistake that this is on top dead center firing on piston number 1 when it is dot-to-dot when you go to stab your distributor. Without checking your valves closed on top dead center it will be 180 out if I'm not mistaken

Can you explain why GM changed from piston 1 being at TDC compression stroke at DOT-TO-DOT to piston 6 on the LT1 engine in a ‘92 Vette? 2:48
@44special9

Piston 1 is at TDC exhaust stroke at DOT-TO-DOT here , not TDC compression stroke .

@@eddiesalinas8458 So you're saying when you're at DOT-TO-DOT your piston 6 is at TDC compression ?
@eddiesalinas8458
@eddiesalinas8458 Жыл бұрын
@@44special9 That’s exactly what I’m saying. I understand the basics, pistons travel in pairs (on a V8). They have to… Just don’t know why GM changed things
@44special9
@44special9 Жыл бұрын
@@eddiesalinas8458 If that's the case then I don't think anything has changed because this old school 350 is the same . Piston 1 (drivers side front) and piston 6 (passenger side third from front ) travel up and down together . When this is DOT-TO-DOT the piston 1 is TDC exhaust stroke and piston 6 is TDC compression . They seem the same to me , if they're different let me know . If it's DOT-TO-DOT and you're getting ready to drop a distributor in then the crank is turned one revolution which puts piston 1 at TDC compression .

Install your timing set and timing cover and then rotate your crank 1 rotation until on TDC again. Now your distributor is ready to install. Edit at this point you cam gear will be 180° from being setup
@Myvintageiron7512
@Myvintageiron7512 Жыл бұрын
I guess I just didn't realize how much misunderstanding there was on this when, the marks are dot to dot this position is TDC on the number one piston but it is not on the power stroke, it is on the exhaust stroke, and the valves are in overlap, the cylinder does not fire there, it's companion cylinder # 6 will be TDC power stroke all you need to do to get # 1 on TDC power is rotate the crankshaft 1 complete rotation this will cause the camshaft to rotate 1/2 turn, the cam and crank are 2 to 1 the cam gear is twice the size of the crank gear and it rotates half the speed of the crank, so 1 full rotation of the crank is 1/2 turn of the cam when the marks are at 12 and 12 the number 1 piston is at TDC power and number 6 is in overlap, I am just now figuring out that there are some people posting on here that don't understand that setting the marks dot to dot is the same as 12 and 12 just 1 rotation off for # 1 I got into a discussion with a guy that insisted the chain has to be installed with the marks at 12 and 12 he clearly did not get that it's the same thing just much easier to make sure the marks are lined up for installation purposes

It's too bad Ford can't put marks on their timing gears. The new ones. Those have a darkened link on the chain. I almost need a telescope to see it. Those I mark with a paint pen.

The dot to dot position is just for installing the chain and gears its much easier to make sure they are dead on if you install at 12 and 12 its actually easy to be a tooth off and not know it, you are correct about TDC exhaust when it's dot to dot but all you need to do is rotate the crank one rotation and your marks will be at 12 and 12 on TDC Power pretty simple
