Hello Martin & Jules! I have been a beekeeper for 30 years (unfortunately today the business is not profitable in Argentina) and I simply wanted to tell you that if you do the honey extraction process where the ambient temperature is higher (30/34 °C), the extraction rate is higher and losses due to material breakage are greatly reduced. The first hive was empty because the other hives robbed all the honey out of it. I could see the middle hive was in the process of being robbed.

Insulated boxes do fine, sugar water, they'll be fine. Hives actually create alot of heat inside, they maintain constant temperatures.

After the 2 SS filters I put mine through a 5 gallon paint strainer and it removes even more of the capping. I lay out a large appliance size cardboard box to catch any wax and honey spills cause it's easy to see.

Hives should be placed a lot further apart. At least 50’. Keeps them from robbing. If they are bees from your area, not shipped in, they would be okay in the winter as long as they had enough honey to live on through the winter. 😊

Is this the US way to get honey? 60 years ago we didn't wear full body protection. The only defense against intrusive bees was my father's cigar. He smoked these even though he was a non-smoker. Nevertheless, I think you did your job well. Stay save!
