Just a good ol' boy born and raised in Alberta, Canada, I’m the proud owner of this 1979 Peterbilt 359 rescued after it was left for dead in a farmer’s field.
Originally used for hauling heavy equipment in the Alberta oil fields, my Pete later ended up pulling a gravel belly dump b-train until it was eventually “retired” to haul the occasional hay bale load for local farmers before being parked in a field near the owner’s home near Mundare.
In the late 90’s I learned the art of trucking from my cousin driving an almost identical 359. I went on to become a mechanical engineer working for a large international corporation but all the while never losing my love for classic trucks and always had my sights set on a twin stick 359.
After placing an ad on Kijiji looking for one, I was contacted almost immediately by the owner of a Pete with a 6x4 Spicer who was very surprised that anyone would want a two-stick transmission. I went out to see the truck that weekend and ended up buying it “as is/where is” (see Season 1 episode 1). I ended up mounting new tires and wheels on the front and had it towed home.
Powered by a Caterpillar 3406A, it has a deep reduction plus Spicer 6x4 double overdrive transmission. The tractor is all original but unfortunately suffered from generations of mice growing up in the interior while it was idle.
I’m currently in the process of restoring this Pete and plan to use it primarily for personal use when finished. I’m looking forward to driving it to shows or the lake with my 5th wheel camper in tow.
I’m not planning a “full classic resto,” but rather a “make it as nice as possible” and as close to original as I can. Planned upgrades include a drop visor, 8-inch straight pipe miter stacks w/pickett elbows, new Bostrom low rider seats, upgraded sleeper, new interior, Texas Blade front bumper, chrome air cleaners, polished tanks and wheels, lots of lights, train horns, classic dual round headlights, and a new paint job in Peterbilt Sovereign Blue with Seminole stripes.
My backyard DIY outdoor restoration of this classic truck in the sun, rain, snow and wind is currently being fully V-logged on KZfaq … checkout “359Twinsticks” to see them all / @twinstix

If you lay pallets around it will keep you out of the mud and keep the mud out of the cab , easy to make a walk way and easy to pick up when done with them . Good update

With the truck that age it is worth it to replace the old fuel lines , it is look ok outside but inside it is eaten up by the fuel. It is a long process to finish the whole truck but it is worth it any minute of it. Whoever give a thumbs down on your project just ignor it, he or she doesn't know anything about trucks.

I'm glad you mentioned the soap...lol. I saw that and I said...."is that a bar is soap!?"....lol. I thought you had put it there for the scent....but.....the mice! Those crazy varmints. There's always mischief when you have a rodent in the woodpile!

A stock 3406a cat pushes 380hp, all you need is marine cat injectors and turbo and that 3406a will be cranking out 550hp to the ground.

If this canadian can restore a peterbuilt semi from a field behind his house in slush and snow, i can tow the old ford truck home from a farmer down the road and get it to run. I hope?

I like your channel. So much Heartblood to restore your Big Boy. I have a 359 13Speed Double Over. I came 1980 to USA from Germany to live my Dream. Because in Germany you can not drive a Truck like that here. Straight Pipes in Germany? Forget it. Or Lights on the Truck? No way Man. So I came to the USA with my Wife. I have worked hard for a House and a Truck. But one thing is clear. I will never go back to Germany. My Rig is a Heavy Hauler with a CAT. I wanna have a Cummins but it costs a lot of money.

You're going to want to mount the air lines below the axle location bar, and get a plastic hose spacer to locate the hoses so they don't touch or rub against any other part of the truck. When the axle drops it may end up ripping out an air line. In your colder climate plastic air lines can get brittle and break at the worst possible moment, so stick with rubber reinforced air-lines. Your area sees temperatures as cold as -50*C

Keep on keeping on! See you are using soap in the ashtray. If you are using that to rid the cab of smells, try a few dryer sheets. I throw a few under the seats of my vintage cars and it helps.... even in the ones that had mouse nests in.

Your doing a great job and I love watching it come together. Going cheap and cutting corners always costs a lot more in the long run so I'm glad to see your doing it right the first time. There is a product called Sharkhide Metal Protectant that you wipe on and let dry and it is supposed to keep your polished aluminum from oxidizing.
