It was 36 years ago, when a CHP officer killed San Diego State Student Cara Knott.
Cara Knott’s body was found in a deserted area off the Old Highway 395 bridge. The 20 year old had called her parents saying she was leaving her boyfriend’s house in Escondido. She stopped to put gas in her car then drove on I-15 toward her home in El Cajon. But she never made it.
"You're heart is fractured. There’s just no words. The pain will be with all of us the rest of our lives," Cara sister, Cynthia Knot said. "Looking for her all night long, up and down the freeways."

She was my Johnson elementary teachers aide. I talked to her the day before she was murdered. She was one of my first crushes and my first time dealing with death. We all let balloons go in her honor and they put a memorial plaque at the school. Cara, thank you for coming down to my level and giving me the sweetest smile as we were throwing the red balls against the wall, only for your life to be taken shortly after by evil. I still have chills. Beautiful inside and out I will never forget you.

We cannot forget her father. He built the garden below the freeway in her honor, worked it every day, and died down there.

I read about this story when I was in college. Because of her, I will never stop for police in an area that is isolated or not well lit. I don’t understand why when someone kills a cop, they get the death penalty, but when police kill civilians they get life.

Went to that garden often That bridge down there has a solemn, eerie feel. Quite frankly, it disgusts me that officer didn't get the death penalty. Those who get a badge and a gun to protect us, and abuse that power for horrible things like this .... Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting.

I live right by that bridge that she was thrown off of. I’ve hiked down there before it is scary af, especially at night.

i remember this shocking news day in SD. Was attending uni. off of pomerado road, just down interstate 15 from the Mercy Road exit. School issued a bulletin cautioning students never to pullover for cops at night if driving alone. At 16 and still impressionable i was a big fan of the tv show CHiPs. From that day on, image of officers Frank Ponzirello and Jon Baker was forever tarnished in my head. Thoughts to the family on Cara's anniv.
