The story of the 36th Infantry Division sees soldiers from the Texas National Guard on a campaign across three continents as they bravely fight for freedom in World War II. The division fought the Germans all across the European theater from Africa to Italy, to France. The men of the 36th fought in battles such as The Salerno Landings, The Rapido River, The Battle of Rome, Montelimar, Castle Itter, and Selestat. Famous World War II stories like the liberation of Dachau, The Lost Battalion, and The alliance at Castle Itter are immortalized through the 36th. Throughout their combat experience, the 36th Infantry Division played a crucial role in bringing down the German war machine in nearly a dozen battles and campaigns for over three years of World War II.

My dad was a member of the Lost Battalion. The tremendous sacrifices made by the 442nd enabled him to come home. I am forever in their debt.

Thanks for making this video. I wish my father could have seen this video. He served in the 36th Division during WWII, from March 1942 to the War's end.

That is remarkable my father served in The 36th infantry division from January 1943 to the end Wars and also. He was a snooper [ intelligent gather] in headquarters company he was one of the few that made it across the Rapado river and the lost battalion in France were the man of the snoopers. A fact that not many people know the original 36th battalion the first do you land on the European continent were mostly made up of Germans ancestry. As President Franklin Delano Roosevelt did not like Germans he wanted the first American warriors to be Germans to fight Germans. My father Joseph F PITTINGER it's listed as listed as a snooper an intelligence gather from headquarters company. You can find his name in the 36th infantry division museum in Austin Texas.

The Rapido River was a tragedy that had so many ramifications for what I believe to be was one of the finest divisions in the WWII European Theater, and I know that I am being biased because my father proudly and honorably served in it. There’s a really good book “T-Patch to Victory” that pays a homage to the division. I am glad I found it and read it. Though I’ve never been to the 36th’s Museum in Austin (but would someday like to visit it in person), years ago I was able to find and download the declassified “After Action Reports” for 132d Field Artillery from its public server. There were some moving moments when I read them. I was also pleased to find that my dad’s name came up as well. I have been working on a historical fiction novel based on my dad’s journey through Italy and France, where I finish it at Montelimar, even though his full service took him all the way to Austria. After several years, it is currently in its third draft. I really should visit the museum before I am finished, as it might give me the impetus to complete it. I would definitely also be interested in learning more about your Father Joseph F Pittinger, who was an intelligence scout observer and hero. @@user-ox4hs6ff2y

Apparently my Grandfather was attached to the 36th infantry division under General Mark Clarke's 5th American Army when he was in Italy. He was a Canadian member of The U.S. / Canada First Special Service Force (Black Devil's).

My father went into combat with the 36th at Anzio, he talked about all the mud. He was also with the Lost Battalion and was rescued by the 442nd. He was severely wounded and returned to the States via hospital ship and spent six months at the military hospital in Galesburg Illinois. He was awarded to two Purple Hearts for wounds received in combat.

My grandfather was also in the 36th. He also talked about the mud in Italy! He fought in the battle of Monte Cassino. He was injured and captured in France becoming a POW. Eventually liberated by Patton's army. He's 99 years old and occasionally gives talks about his experiences.

The assault crossings of the Rapido were virtual suicide missions. The New Zealand Divisional Commander at the time (Kippenberger) visited the crossing points post battle and said ‘Everything was lacking but the courage’. High praise from a seasoned Commonwealth Commander.

I really Like Your video’s . My Uncles served in the 34th and 75th Infantry Divisions and the 14th Armored Division. My Grandmothers Cousin was in the 7th Infantry Division from the beginning but was Killed in action on Leyte. My Father in Law was in the 95th Infantry Division. Many early losses in state guard Federalized Division’s were replaced with people from other states. My Uncle Lou Ardito joined the 168th Regiment , 34th Division before landing In Italy about the same time Audie Murphy came to the 36th. Louie Ardito told Me that the 34th was proud to have the Japanese Americans of the 100th Battalion that would later become the 442nd Regimental Combat Team with them in Italy. The 442nd was later attached to the 36th Texas Oklahoma Division . The Texas Oklahoma Division was also brought up to strength with replacements from many other states. The 442nd was comprised of Japanese Americans from all over the U.S. at some point please detail the reorganization or Table of Organization and Equipment / TOE that created a Regimental Combat Team. For instance My Uncle Bernard Nerviani was originally in the 275th Engineer Combat Battalion of the 75th Infantry Division. Prior to going into action at Grandmenil Belgium the Battalion was divided giving each Rifle Regiment its own contingent of Combat Engineers. My Uncle always said He was in the 289th. They all had history books they received from the Army that were kind of like High School Yearbooks, with pictures and description’s

I have recently moved to Vesoul in France and have seen a memorial to the 36th division marking their sacrifice for its liberation. I was keen to find out more about the men listed, so thank you for the video!

CORRECTION: It was General Fred Walker who commanded the 36th in Italy during World War 11, not Frank Walker as mentioned in this video.
