This is not a lock, it's a latch. It's a cheap "security theater" object to deter theft, not a lock. If you're cheap and whatever you're securing with this isn't worth a lot, it's useful to keep honest people honest, which is all a lock is meant to do, but it's definitely not a serious security device and shouldn't be used as one.
@nomore61673 жыл бұрын
"They gave it a core that is very easy to pick, they gave it a locking mechanism that can be easily bypassed, it literally falls apart, it smells so bad it's making my eyes water, and it's made out of very, very thin materials." But other than that, it's perfect, right? I mean, it's red, and all thieves know to stay away from red because red means danger. Maybe they figured the smell alone would be enough of a deterrent. Honestly, I've watched several of your videos over the past few days, and it's been a real eye-opener. What layperson would have thought the "security" industry was making basically useless products and marketing them as "security" devices?

Thieves see a U lock and don’t even try. Honestly, you don’t even have to lock it onto a bike to scare people away. You can, in most places (excluding high crime areas), just make it sorta look like it’s locked onto the seat and they don’t steal it. They carry bolt cutters, not lock picks and shims
@Guythatyoudontknow Жыл бұрын

Actually, I think LPL just convinced me that this lock is a great deal. It's only $3. For $3 you get a bike lock that will make it LOOK like your bike is secured which will deter most people from bothering. Only a thief with enough knowledge/determination to pick it, bring bolt cutters or know enough to shim it would bother. So if you're cheap and reluctant to buy a serious lock, why not get this? It's a visual deterrent. It's kind of like the Coral Snake approach. The Coral Snake is venomous but several snakes have evolved similar colors and looks and benefit from potential predators mistaking them for Coral snakes. This bike lock is not venemous, but it looks like it to those who don't know better.

True. For a small town or suburban area. Even at a college, if your college is fairly safe, this is better than those combination cable locks for $10 that look like they can be cut with scissors. Even those locks work fine for those areas as long as your bike isnt very flashy. That said, unless your bike is an absolute piece of junk, spend at least $15 on a nicer U lock. Walmart has plenty of options from Bell and Kyrptonite. (Still not great, see LPL 735 and 455)

@@garywilliams6124 To be perfectly honest an expensive is going to get stolen no matter what lock you use, if you leave it outside because you used bike to commute, go to library etc. As the LPL mentions, you should always carry the bike or leave it under someone's surveillance unless you're riding the walbike and the likes. At that point anything that remotely resembles a lock would stop people.

@@garywilliams6124 Most security measures are psychological. It's almost impossible to create ACTUAL security, just various levels of temporary deterrence. How thorough that deterrence has to be depends on who you expect to be trying to take your stuff. Even a really cheap lock will put off most casual, opportunistic thieves. A fairly solid one might put off a more professional thief. But probably only because there's an easier target nearby... But I doubt you'll stop anyone taking your stuff with any kind of lock or other security device, no matter how good it is. Because it's still not good enough...

I bought a bike a little while ago second-hand, and the previous owner wanted to be kind and threw in this exact lock, as well as a chain and . . . a particularly bad masterlock padlock. I politely accepted them, (the chain is actually really thick and quality), but yeesh, wonder how she never got it stolen on her all these years. Any lock you can open by standing next to the bike, hauling on the lock lightly, and banging with your knee just seems completely pointless. The masterlock she included was nice and heavy and "quality" feeling in the sense that heavy = quality to many people's minds, but it, too, opens with a sharp rap while pulling on the shackle.

I was in uniform and working yesterday, and went to the ACE Hardware in town to find a good padlock. Another guy was also there trying to find a Master. While we were both waiting I mentioned to him that Masters are a "beginning pickers" lock. After watching this video, I think he made a great choice between the Master 40mm plastic and this piece of junk!

@@petermichaelgreen It's definitely interesting to consider since so many people end up committing crimes for so many different reasons. Although it's just so convenient to paint them all the same, there is a difference between a big money career criminal, gang related planned thefts/burglaries, a petty opportunist street thief, and even a homeless person trying to make it to tomorrow. While obviously there's little that can be said to justify crime - as an example, in heavy snow deep wilderness areas, there's typically a laws that make it legal to break into a cabin, house, remote shelter, etc. should anyone be lost out in the middle of nowhere, a legitimate life or death situation(obviously them breaking in, eating some food and taking some fuel or something is significantly different than the aforementioned 'common criminals') - this is still a very complex and layered aspect of society, one that most prefer to slap a generic one-size-fits-all 'bad person' label on it, then shove it in a closet to be ignored after the smallest amount of logic has been invested. It would certainly be quite interesting to see some kind of research into this, seeing how it breaks down, but it isn't like anything like this will be funded anytime soon - just shove it in the back of the closet and ignore it

I used to know a professional bike thief who preferred taking bikes that used "Krypton" locks because they were so easy to get off. But he didn't pick them, that took too long. He would just walk up to the nearest BMW [they were everywhere in those days and most people didn't lock the trunks] take out the jack and would place it between the U and crank it open. Ping. 4 turns of the crank and the "hardened" steel just popped open. 30 seconds and on his way.

Seeing both crime gangs and crackheads in action, literally none of them lockpick and always go for the brute force method because most of the time its quicker. They use a screwdriver and a hammer to break into shit. Obscurity seems to be a better defense than anything under $100 can get you.

TheaDragonSpirit that's my approach. A thick galvanized cable with swaged crimps, and a hardened steel chain with two separate locks.
