Check it out as I discuss this awesome build and talk more about the 375 Raptor. For more information on the 375 Raptor check out 375raptor.com.

I kept and used the oem barrel nut. Little crow works makes a barrel nut wrench for the Ruger American to reuse it.

They sure do! I used their tool to remove the barrel nut. I like having teeth over a smooth barrel nut though. The one I used is a Savage patterned barrel nut so I can use my savage barrel nut wrench with it.

Yea that makes sense the drop off after 300 because it’s such a heavy projectile. Sounds like your barrel life will be as good or better then a 308 since it’s going 300 FPS slower. Have you taken an hog’s or what ever you like to hunt? Thinking this would maybe offer a one shot per customer for a good 250+ lbs Boar/s. Is the barrel on your savage also an Excalibur, memory got me I think that was a fluted bull barrel in 308? That 375 is cool, that savage is gorgeous.
@yellowhammeroutdoors5516
@yellowhammeroutdoors5516 Жыл бұрын
Barrel on my Savage is an X-caliber as well. It’s a Savage Big Varmint profile which means it tapers down to about .810. It’s definitely a heavy barrel and the spiral flutes help reduce weight. It’s chambered in 6.5WSM. Barrel life will not be as good as the .375 Raptor. You are right about barrel life being better than .308. It’s a soft shooting gun and one shot, one kill for big hogs. 6.5WSM is a wildcat based on .270 WSM but with better selection of bullets and better BC for long range. I’ll do a video on the Savage shortly to really go over everything on it.

Nice build! I had to use a spanner wrench for my PTG barrel nut, of course this was back in the day when they were the only option in the game. Are you going with a Bug Nuts barrel nut in the future?

Do you start with a 308 and just change the barrel to that caliber?
@yellowhammeroutdoors5516
@yellowhammeroutdoors5516 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, 375 Raptor is based on a .308 caliber so it is easiest to do it that way. You can use any short action rifle caliber with a .308 bolt face.

Why not use the 338 Federal with 250 grain bullets?
@yellowhammeroutdoors5516
@yellowhammeroutdoors5516 2 жыл бұрын
Great question, I considered the .338 federal and I actually use .338 federal brass to form 375R. However, 375 RAPTOR changes the shoulder angle from 20 degrees to 35 degrees to provide a well defined datum point for the cartridge to headspace. In addition, the 375 RAPTOR is .150″ shorter than the 308 Winchester which permits up to .935″ of bullet exposure while keeping within magazine length - required to load the 350 grain Sierra Match King magazine length. This allows me to load very heavy bullets and still be able to load them in short action magazines. This gives me much more energy down range than a .338 federal ever could and also gives me the flexibility to load high energy subsonic rounds, should I have the inclination.

What barrel contour did you go with
@yellowhammeroutdoors5516
@yellowhammeroutdoors5516 Жыл бұрын
I went with a #8 light target contour. I wouldn’t recommend any bigger for the Hunter stock, it’s a perfect fit and free floats but you might run into issues with larger contours.

When I first built mine, I wondered the same thing but I think it’s a perfect round for GA Whitetail. I hunt quite a bit in Laurens County, south of Macon, and it’s my favorite woods rifle. Can shoot through brush if I need to and you can get away with an 18-20” barrel making it very handy in the woods.

I like H4895 powder. For H4895, you could start at about 42 grains and work your way up to about 46.5 grains. Something else to keep on hand is a powder burn rate chart to compare burn rates for different powders.
