Just watched your Review, and I really appreciated the way you have covered all that you did, in a clear and cohesive fashion. I just Subscribed to your Channel, and am looking forward to watching your other Videos about the .375 Ruger. I was really surprised about the Water absorption, the Swelling, and Recoil Lug Breakdown. (You shouldn’t have Shot it after that, as it could be the End of you. Too close!) I am Happy you are so blessed to have your Health, and to Live in such a Sportsman’s Paradise!!! I have a S&W 4” Barreled .500 S&W Magnum Revolver, that one of my Best Friends Paid For, after hearing of my Dream to Fly In to a Remote Lake in Alaska, with a Log Cabin..... with a Group of Hunting Friends, to Hunt Brown Bears, and hopefully doing so in a very Close Encounter. I don’t have a Dangerous Game Rifle yet, so when I saw the Title with a Ruger .375, I had to watch your Video. I have been drooling over the Winchester Model 70 African, and Alaskan, though they aren’t Stainless Steel. My Dream however, is likely to remain to be just that.... a Dream, as I have MS now. My Buddy, after a Phone Call for the First Time in many Years, and hearing of my situation, both Physically and Financially, took it upon himself to get me closer to being able to realize that Dream, by offering to Buy me the 4” .500 S&W. He also would be one of my Friends that would go to Alaska with me for a Hunt like that. In fact... he said “I could get you there and back”, and that is just what he would do for his Friend!! A little bit about the Barrel Band Front Swivel.... Respectfully, the reason they put the Barrel Band Swivel on the Barrel of the Dangerous Game Caliber Rifles, is to Save your Hand on the Forearm, from potentially getting injured from the Swivel Stud and Swivel. I only mention it because you didn’t. I fully agree with you about the benefit of it allowing the Barrel to be much Lower during Carrying in the Brush. Take care, and Happy Hunting!!

Sorry to hear about your experience with the laminate stock, you made the right decision with the Hogue aluminum bedded stock. The 350 grains Weldcore bullet has a great reputation as a dangerous game bullet and at 2350 fps it is the perfect combination for close to medium range. Enjoyed your very detailed video !

Good coverage on the muzzle brake. A few points: 1) I am not an acoustic engineer, but if you start looking into firearm noise, it is crazy loud. The db scale is logarithmic, the actual increase in db is a 10X greater sound energy for every 10 db increase. So a 160 db discharge is 10X more potentially damaging than a 150 db discharge. 2) I used to read about db levels and heard that the louder firearms are 160. Not too bad. Well actually 160 is orders of magnitude above what will cause damage, which is above 82, and above 100 where plugs and muffs are required. The very best muffs with great fit are around 30 db. Which means that if you discharge a 160 db rifle, you are standing there taking a 130 db hit, which is hugely worse than what our ears can take. 3) But there is more. The 160 number I heard for years for very loud guns is not how loud they really are, it is the point above which, meters, at least the commonly available ones, tap out. This is why people at the next bench where someone is firing a muzzle brake magnum, loose hearing from only a shot or two, no mater what they are wearing. Barrel length: The reason Alaskan rifles have short barrels is because of heavy cover, but most hunting for grizz is still in the wide open. And when the going gets nasty, your guide will take over in most cases. So what are the problems with short barrels and noise. Sound reduces at the square of distance, so shortening barrels is a double whammy on noise. You get more muzzle blast, and you get it closer to your ear. So just guessing, if the muzzle was 30 inches from you ear on a 20" Guide gun, but 34" in the African, the noise based on the distance alone would be 28% more energetic from the shorter barrel. Plus the blast effects. Speaking of blast, the 416 and 375 Rugers use the same case, so the 375 is a lot more overbore than the 416. And the 338 sounds horrendously overbore for a guide gun. Tia Shoemaker, the famed bear guide. shoots a 416 Remington but downloads it to 404 levels of around 2000 fps. Rather than her 375 Ruger she had previously carried. I don't know what her current loadings are. But that would be one way to get the blast and barrel length equation in check. The 50 Alaskan would be another. Keep loads reasonable. The moment a person gets a set of dies they seem to want to beat the factory ammo in a drag race. But for a DG rifle, just about everything is more important. Like case extraction. The Ruger barrel weight should be a great idea. The deep counter boring of rifles is a custom feature some smiths provide, and this gets you that, out of the box.

I have the LH version. I didn't think that I was going to like the color, but it looks better in person, I do like the colors. The one thing I don't like is the spacers. I know it's so people can adjust the LoP to suit their needs. But I just use the full length. I bought mine because I want to go to Alaska for a brown bear and a moose. After watching your review, I'm probably going to add a Hogue stock before heading there.

Great video and rifle setup. One thing that I would change, i would use the Warne quick detatch rings that are made for the Ruger. I do that with some of my regular big game rifles because many times i just like going into the thick forest in these Rocky Mountains that are just a 15 minute drive for me getting into from my home. Though now being single and no kids I'm seriously considering moving up to Alaska, maybe the interior up in Fairbanks. Thanks again for this video.

Did you buy that Hogue stock seperately and put it on? I think Ruger switched to laminate stocks so they could use a cross bolt. I'm considering the same one in 416 ruger and also getting a green hogue like yours. Do you find lacking the crossbolt has an affect on accuracy?

416 Ruger ammunition is scarce and expensive. If you're a hand loader then that makes little difference. I keep thinking about adding the 416 to my arsenal but it's hard to justify, the 375 does that job pretty well.

Well you answer one question, and that is why a lot of the pros are buying this rifle in the Hogue overmolded style. I like the wooden stock and would epoxy the heck out of all the internals. (though now that I think of it, I haven't touched my guide gun). But it is ridiculous if they haven't fixed this problem. Wood actually does better than most composites if it is epoxy coated, at least with boats, but it has to be meticulously done and if there is maintenance it has to be done.

Great review. One quick thing is that maybe the best thing about Ruger firearms is their customer service. You could have contacted them, they would have either had you ship it in or shipped you a new stock. At that point you could have glass bedded it. I may be moving to Alaska later this summer if I get this job in Anchorage, so doing some rifle shopping now. What you reported on that factory stock confirmed my suspicions exactly, so great info. I was hoping that the Ruger Hawkeye Hunter would be a possible option, but found out Ruger doesn't make the 375 in left handed. I think Browning makes their A-Bolt SS Stalker in .375HH left handed so may need to keep my eyes peeled for one of those. Thanks for the vid, new sub.

Ruger FTW comes in 375 and they are now offering the Ruger Alaskan again, Hogue stock and all! I'd personally stick with a Mauser style action in a bear country rifle for the reasons I mentioned in the video, not that a push feed like a Browning wouldn't get it done, they're fine rifles.

@@alaskatruoutdoors9238 OK, I may have to call Ruger to ask. According to their website the LEFT hand Ruger TRW only is made in 300WM and 6.5CR...could be outdated info at this point? The Guide Gun .375 is available in LH but I'd like to avoid buying a rifle I need to restock off the bat. Finding after-market stocks in LH is a whole other fiasco that would come next unfortunately....this challenge never seems to stop. Actually Savage is the company that really caters to lefties more than anybody else. But in LH offerings they max out at 300WM, or the Savage 110 Storm might have been an option.

@Alaskan Tru Outdoors, First thanks for the great video. I have 270 Win and the 308 Win and a 30-06 and a 45-70 and this past year I bought a 338 Win mag, cause some of the guys I hunt with wants me to go to Canada or Alaska for a moose hunt with them someday. These guys go every year. I am seriously thinking about going with them someday. I never done this kind of hunting before. The one guy uses a 303 British and other guy uses a 30-06, not sure on what the other guys use. I think I probably get buy with the 30-06 and the 45-70 from everything I hear and read for that type of hunting. I do know if I am wood hunting the 45-70 probably be better. If I am hunting moose in open fields I would think the 338 Win mag or 30-06 be better. What caliber do you recommend for a person like myself that never done moose hunting before ?
@alaskatruoutdoors9238
@alaskatruoutdoors9238 5 жыл бұрын
AirborneSoldier America , 3006 has killed more moose here in Alaska than any other cartridge, with a good bonded bullet in 180 grains it will get the job done but shot placement is VERY important. 45-70 is a good choice if you're close, also very effective for grizzly defense if you train with it enough (most guys won't). Your .338 win mag is probably the perfect cartridge for up here, it meets all the requirements. A good rifle in that chambering with a quality 3-9 or 2-10 scope and you're ready for anything! Always use bonded bullets, Nosler partitions or Barnes for moose and grizzly, they can take a deal of killing. If you have an opportunity to hunt the North take it!

@@alaskatruoutdoors9238 Thanks for getting back to me so fast on this. I just hope these guys I hunt deer with are going up in the next 5 to 10 years from now cause I am going to go with them for sure. Think they probably will go. Long story short, this past year had to move and get another house, so I am a little short of money for the next year or 2, till I get some more money saved up on to do an hunt like this, and I will go for sure then. I also would also like to do an caribou hunt, when I am there. This is the main reason on why I bought my Win model 70, in the 338 Win mag for, cause figured be covered for anything under 1000 yards, to do an hunt like this. Cause figured if I spend any were from $4,000.00 to maybe $10,000.00 on a hunt like this, just don't want nothing to go wrong, is a big reason on why I chosen the big huge 338 Win mag. Not bragging but think I am probably good enough with my lever marlin 45-70 at close distance against bear attacks. I did get a wild hog with it in Florida with the 45-70. Of course it was not charging at me at the time when I shot it. But since I do pheasant hunting I think I am fast enough to get a 45-70 out and at least pointed at the target and probably get at least 1 shot off on a Kodiak bear if I need to defend myself. Or I hope so, but guess that depends if GOD is on my side if he wants me still be around or not, like doing anything else I guess. And thank you for the feed back on what kind of scope cause I need a scope for my 338 Win mag. Cause I do need to put a scope on that rifle for a hunt like this for sure.

@cabochris100 Ай бұрын
Good vid. I have one in factory stock, and am deciding to keep it or not. My bolt is coated black and is very slick. I can't stand the 2 round poor quality detachable junky mag box. But I do not want to turn it into an expensive single shot to seat bullets out longer. Were I to keep this 28, it would have to shoot factory length ammo well, and I hear the factory 175 ABLRs, the rounds I have are finiky. I do like the gun, as I've not sold it yet. I like it's lighter weight for long hunts/days packing. But I do not like loud brakes. How do you handle unexpected snap-shots? Any hearing protection, or not? What scope are you using? Lastly for elk and black bear, how would you compare 28 Nosler performance, with 7PRC and 300 RUM?
@alaskatruoutdoors9238
@alaskatruoutdoors9238 Ай бұрын
I’m confused, sounds like you’re commenting on a rifle other than the Ruger guide gun the video is about? As to your final question about cartridge selection for elk and bear, all three you mentioned are good choices but they’re all pretty limited on factory ammo selection. If you hand load, no problem. If not, I’d probably pick a 300 win mag, it’s not the best but it’s damn good and every manufacturer loads for it.

Kennard Lang Wow!!!! I too have been Eyeing the Winchester Model 70 Alaskan and Safari!!! I really wish that they had the Safari in .500 Lott. If they did, I probably would already own it! If you were to ask me what Caliber Choice I would make, if I had to decide right now, I would probably choose the .416 Remington Mag. for my First Choice, and the .375 H&H as my Second Choice..... and the .458 Winchester Mag. as my 3rd Choice. I’m not fully prepared, and would have to Research the Charts, and Information from various other Places further, such as KZfaq also, before making my final choice. I have been watching “Guns of The Safari” on Amazon Prime, and you should absolutely watch that!! It is an Auction Company that makes Videos about really Rare and interesting Firearms it is going to be Selling. I came across their Videos by chance, and I have enjoyed them thoroughly, and I’m sure that you will also! Guns of the Safari, is showing the absolutely GIANTS of the Old English and other’s Type of Rounds from that Golden Age of Hunting, that the Wealthy, and I would say the Military Officers of the Day in India, and Africa, were able to enjoy.... and the only way for them to increase the Power with Black Powder Rifles, beyond the more Common Rounds..... was to increase the Bore Size. These Rifles they show in that Video, are True “Stopping Rifles.” They also Cover some Rifles that Wealthy People had made, just to Play with!! I’m talking Guns so Large, that the average Man, wouldn’t be able to hold up to their Shoulder for longer than a few moments!! Take Care!

If you handload you might as well go 416. I'm still wanting one even though I'm pretty well covered with the 375. 375 Ruger ammo is spendy but available, 416 is crazy expensive and good luck ever finding it anywhere. Handload for 1/4 the cost.

@@alaskatruoutdoors9238 thanks for your opinion! I probably would mostly use it as a brush gun for big black bears here in NY and also light handloads for deer. Going to Alaska and Rocky mountains next year possibly on a wilderness gold expedition in Alaska need a brush gun that can stop a big bear with authority.

I never fired my rifle Ruger Alaskan with the Hogue Stock. I never cared for them. I ordered an HS Precision stock when I ordered the rifle. It shoots amazingly well with 260gr Nozler Acubonds. I have the Hogue stock if anyone is interested in it. I put a Nightforce 2.5-10 with a Medium Velocity Reticle. Lines up perfect with my handloads. I am looking at another 1-8 Nightforce for it.

I recently bought a ruger guide in 416 ruger and have been looking at the hogue stock , not sure which model though thinking of full bed for sure . thinking its the long action standard barrel on the hugue web site not for sure on that though any suggestions would be appreciated being you already purchased one ???

Long action heavy or bull barrel! Standard barrel stock will not work, not enough clearance! I'd definitely spend the extra $ for the full bed block, the pillar bed only stock will flex under the recoil of the big magnums. Congrats on getting that 416 and thanks a bunch for watching and subbing!

Ok I have been on the hogue site and they have three selections , standard , b barrel which only offers pillar bed and last but not least varmint/heavy which offers both pillar bed and full bed so I assume then it must be sku # 77213 that would fit our rifles ?? Thanks for the fast reply by the way

shawnz37 I actually called Hogue before ordering to get clarification, told them I wanted full bed block stock for my rifle and they set it up and took my order right then. Pretty sure mine is the heavy/varmint and it's a perfect fit, allows for a generously free floated barrel. They were very kind, helpful and professional on the phone too.

Im left handed and have a the lefty version of the Ruger Alaskan 375 w/o the muzzlebreak. I messaged Hogue and they dont make lefty stocks but will modifiy the stock you have tonfit my rifle for an additional $250 on top of the cost of a stock. Im considering this as its a step abobe the standard laminate and it would be a one and done type ofnpurchase. Im using your idea of a lower power practice load as well but it will be running cast so i can keep the costs even lower.

I’m sure it’s a cost thing, the better stock is considerably more expensive. Ruger has the best customer service I know of, and yes they’re still a good company but they’ve been cutting a lot of corners in recent years. Fit and finish is not what it was 20 years ago. Of the last 5 I’ve bought 4 had some type of major defect, 3 had to be sent back to be fixed. They always make it right (except in the case of the guide gun stock) but it’s getting pretty irritating. Porkchop's Papi If you hand load it’s a nearly perfect cartridge. I’ve loaded bullets from 235 grain to 350 grain. With 235’s at 2900 fps it has the same drop as my 308 Win with 165’s out to about 500 yards, perfect for most North American game. 300 grainers at about 2650 fps for big ornery bull moose. 350 grain Woodliegh weldcore bullets at about 2400 fps for brown bear. If you don’t hand load then 375 H&H or 338 Win mag will give you more factory ammo options. For here in Alaska it’s perfect, for the lower 48 it’s probably more whollop than you’ll ever need.

I agree in part, haha. The 375 Ruger cartridge is designed to work well with a 20" barrel, the gains from a 22" or 24" barrel are what I would call diminishing returns.
