I just don't understand why these videos aren't getting millions of views. The world is a perplexing place....high level jazz education on this channel. Keep going brother, the world needs this.

It puzzles me at times too,.... I see some of my competition talking out their ass, getting 1000s of views... ?? But mine aint click bait and gimmicky 7 minutes of fluff, its more substantive, which I think scares away many??? All the same it is still growing steady, and I would rather have a following of 5000 that watch and get it , than 100 000 that just tune in to tune out??

Too funny, my first jazz album was Monk's Genius of Modern Music, Vol 1. I used to ride my bike to a NY area store called Korvettes when I first started buying records using money I made on a paper route. There was an African American guy, probably in his mid to late 20s, who worked in the record dept. He saw me looking through stuff, came over, started asking me some questions about what I liked and we started talking. He seemed to know a lot and I was always interested in trying something new, so I asked him to pick something out for me. He gave me the Monk record. I loved it and went back for more. He turned me on to Jimmy Smith next, and so on and so and so on. Wish I could go back and thank him.

I can relate to your experience. I grew up in Levittown,Pa.,a suburb of Philly.Just the mention of Levittown for years became synonymous with the suburbs. But there were several places of jazz record treasures ,such as Korvettes,S.Klein,Two Guys,and even K-Mart,Woolco and Sears.(Yes,Sears used to have a record dept. where I found a Blue Note two-fer of Miles' great work of 52-54.Actually,I think I recall that by then it was issued on United Artists) Another powerful moment was finding Andrew Hill's "Smokestack " on Blue Note( which is still one of my personal favorites) and a George Russell on Riverside, each for 99cents.I was much younger then,and wasn't aware of how the musicians rarely (if ever) saw a dime from these re-issues ,or how badly they were ripped-off in general.I just found that these and other newly discovered gems at that time would lead me to a whole new wonderful world of sounds and feelings.Special memories!

Thanks for that Dan, many recordings I'm unfamiliar with. Blue Note is my favourite, the recordings sound like proper pieces of music, rather than a group of guys queuing up to take solos. On Blue Note you would often have an intro ', a well executed theme, (often an original composition), good solos and an end. Think of Horace Silver, as on Song For My Father! I'm overstating my case here, but to me Prestige often has about 4 horns queuing up to blow on "rhythm" changes or a 12 bar head that sounded like it was written in the studio ( I've read Weinstock took copyright for originals, which would discourage musicians contributing their own), long solos followed by a long trading 4s sequence. But I guess some find this approach exciting.
@TheJazzShepherd
@TheJazzShepherd 3 жыл бұрын
that Prestige format does allow for some honest BLOWING, and emoting... but certainly less challengng and less unified spiritually

Hi Dan - again great job and again you cost me some money.... I don't have a LP-player anymore, so I need to grab the CDs - but here in Austria that's also a bit difficult. On Amazon Germany most of the CDs are either not available or the ask ridiculous prices for imports (50 - 120 USD !!!). Now good news is that my wife is Japanese, has an account with amazon Japan - so I can get there some really good price (either through prime or different second hand dealers), have it sent to her friend - and then the package(s) will be collected and sent to Vienna. Well, I think packages as I ordered now 30+ CDs (Blue Note, Riverside...). Keep up the great work! Servus, Kurt

@@TheJazzShepherd I have Dan. Some of the. best TV I have ever seen; a great show in all aspects. It really does paint a story of desperation and sorrow. People are just driven into this life that they don't want just out of necessity and peer pressure and parental pressure and just this expectation that this is what you do because this is who you are. But that's true across the spectrum but when you are at the wrong end of the spectrum then the 'path' is pretty poor. I can hear a lot of people saying 'yeah, it's just Hollywood, just a story'. But yes one rooted in what it is like on the streets. Anybody who has gotten on the wrong subway, the wrong side of mid night and ended up in the wrong part of town and not your safe white middle class enclave will know. South Africa and the USA are the only two countries I have been to where the social divide is so stark. Yes every town has it's 'wrong side of the tracks' but rarely where the nightly death toll can be counted on the fingers of many hands. Every night, every week, every year. That environment is stressful! That stress comes out in the music. Dan when you say the jazz created by the black man has that extra edge that the white jazz doesn't have you are bang on the money. Just listen to Eminem vs NWA. Sorry Eminem you are just dancing on the coat tails of an art created elsewhere. Back on point.. great show Dan. SO hard to pick a BN short list and yes once you are past '61 or so that hard bop. peak has passed and the BN sound has moved away from the trunk as the tree branches out. Great branches with some fantastic colourful leaves though. I would have picked a different set but essentially the same themes. Hard to go wrong to be fair with BN. Digressing a little, I really enjoyed your OLD show on the vibes recently. I've been digging thru the archives and it seems I need some Lionel in my life.
