The Jimmy Giuffre 3, 1961 is incredible indeed. I discovered it some years ago, and it led me into a deep dive into Giuffre’s music, earlier and later.

For folks interested in Jimmy Giuffre, the documentary film of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival 'Jazz on a Summer's Day' is an absolute must. The Giuffre Trio (with Jim Hall and Bob Brookmeyer) opens the proceedings, in stunning fashion. (I thought I'd heard you mention having seeing this film in one of your earlier videos, Mazzy). There is also an album entitled 'The Sound of Jazz', a vinyl transcription of a 1957 television program that contains numerous performances from various combinations of jazz giants, all in the studio at one time: Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Lester Young, Thelonious Monk, Coleman Hawkins, Gerry Mulligan, Vic Dickenson, Jo Jones, Freddie Green, Doc Cheatham, Red Allen, Jimmy Rushing, Mal Waldron, Danny Barker, others I'm leaving out. An amazing record with the Giuffre Trio performance of 'The Train and the River' (unless I am mistaken, the same tune they perform in 'Jazz on a Summer's Day'), as well as a wonderful impromptu jam between Giuffre, Pee Wee Russell, Danny Barker, and Jo Jones. Much great music contained therein! NOT to be missed.

Regarding Paul Motian’s name, the correct Armenian pronunciation is Moh-tee-un. You hear it announced that way on the Bill Evans Vanguard recordings. Great conversation, enjoyed listening in, I have all the Jimmy Guiffre that were shown, all of them are great experiments in structure, rhythm and improv, no drummer, Jim Hall is so great, and Bob Brookmeyer has become a favorite, saw them first ,Mazzy, in the Film of the Newport Jazz Festival from '58, Jazz On A Sunny Day with Chico Hamilton too, and a terrible Chuck Berry appearance with Jack Teagarden!!! So wrong. Would love them to reissue Tony Williams Lifetime LP Emergency! I love in a Silent Way but Sorcerer and Filles of Kilimanjaro are as enjoyable too, thanks Mazzy, feel vindicated in a way, because many Jazzers I know seem ignorant of Guiffre or think he is MOR jazz and I don't hear that, same with Chico or MJQ. Once again, thanks to you, I am off to the record store to find that Kenny Burrell, already have the Grant Green. Cheers....

Well, Mazzy now just needs to compare with the digital format and see, hear, feel which is the best. I know what it is. Don't worry about the TV, it's not that fabric that will make a difference, because there are much more serious things in the living room to get good sound, the bench behind your guests, the fridge and even the Beatles paintings...

for the love of all things holy, why no focus on the three sounds??? such an 'in the pocket' trio, beautiful range. In the first six minutes Joe Harley confirmed the new series are more accurate to the master tapes than the original then Mazzy tried to recover for collectors of originals by saying "it's not about one being better than the other". That fact they could improve the sound is the main point of the reissues.
@mazzysmusic
@mazzysmusic Жыл бұрын
Not recovering for OG collectors at all. It’s really just a preference. I prefer the sound of the newer versions. Obviously I haven’t heard any of the tapes but I enjoy the fuller midrange and bass from the Classics and Tone Poets.

Hey Norman; Tone Poet: my guess is you skipped at least some of the Turrentine albums. As far as the CLASSIC SERIES: it is a shame to release these Blue Note albums in such sub-par jackets. Blue Note artwork is a fundamental part of the equation and label heritage, and these covers just don't match the brand's equity, nor the quality of the pressed plastic. They don't need to reproduce these in the high gloss gatefold covers used on MM/TP, but could step up the quality a couple notch. Just don't do gatefold, but do it well. CRAFTSMANSHIP.
