Make a quick, easy, inexpensive Bowl Cozy to keep from burning your fingers when removing a hot bowl from the microwave. This project only takes 1 skein/ball of worsted weight 100% cotton yarn to make. Why not make lots of them and give them as gifts?
This video includes a full tutorial to make the bowl cozy from beginning to end.

To make a larger bowl cozy, you can add more increase rounds at the end of the first section with the 8 increases evenly spaced to make it wider. You can also add more increase rounds in the second section with the 4 increases evenly spaced to make it taller. If you add more increase rounds in the first section, you'll need to work more sc between the increases in the corners in the second section, of course.

I'm glad you like my video, Carol. The written instructions at the bottom of the screen are called "subtitles". I take the extra time to enable the subtitles and make sure the subtitles in my videos are correct so people who speak other languages can also learn the crochet technique or project I'm teaching (with the subtitles translated into their language). Happy crocheting to you!

Thanks for the tip about using a scrap yarn piece as a stitch marker. I kind of despise the little plastic rings, so I think I’ll be using the scrap yarn trick going forward. Your tutorial was so clear and easy to follow, thanks for sharing.

I loved your tutorial. Very easy to follow! I made mine 2 rows shorter because my bowls aren’t quite as large as yours. This took about 3/4 of a skein of 120 yards/2.5 oz 100% cotton yarn (#4) with a “G” hook (4.25mm). I used stitch markers in the 4 corners and made sure they stayed in that center stitch (of 3) which made it go faster for me as ADD makes it difficult to not forget where I am when distracted. I finished using the reverse SC which is cool! Never did that before. I also added a PICOT in 3 Of the corners for a little pizzazz and made a chain 10 loop in the last corner so I can hang this on a hook in my camper. I think I will make these for my nesting glass bowls in my camper to use in place of the bubble wrap I’m currently using. I may also trim a few rows for my regular bowls as this sticks up about 4 rows above my bowl (even though I trimmed off 2 rows already. Fantastic pattern. I’m ever so grateful!

I made one of these and I have a tip. I have to count stitches, if I don't really have to. I found that if you put a stitch marker in the center stitch for each corner and move it up for each row, then the counting of stitches isnt as important. I did count on each single crochet when repeating row 11, so that I made sure I had the correct amount each time. By marking the corners for each round, you are making sure your corners stay lined up

Thank you so much for sharing your talent and this pattern in an easy to follow manner! I have recently started expanding my crocheting horizons to include items that aren't flat and at 66 years of age I'll admit to enjoying it! I made this cozy for my daughter and she loves it. I added a loop to be able to hang it up near the microwave. You're a great teacher, thanks again!

Thank you so much for a great and easy pattern. I appreciate your mellow teaching style, you explain things well and skip ahead when appropriate. A pleasure to watch and follow! I started with a 5.5 hook for the first 4 or 5 rounds and I think that's why my cozy came out with an extra inch on the measurement, but it still works fine for everything from my smallest bowls to a 20 ounce dixie disposable bowl. Like you demonstrate, just hold from the corners! God bless you!

Thanks for such clear directions! I'm going to try making the flat bottom larger so it will fit our pasta bowls. I've made bowl cozies with quilted fabric, and they are in constant use - in fact, worn to shreds, so these directions come just as I'm thinking about making replacements.

@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 2 жыл бұрын
Sherry, Did it turn out the same size as mine? If it's bigger, you probably need to use a smaller crochet hook so your stitches are more compact, which will make it stiffer. And did you use a worsted weight 100% cotton yarn? Also, do you pull up on the loop after inserting your hook in the stitch and drawing up a loop to make your sc? If so, your stitches will be taller and not as compact. I hope this helps!

Just found this, exactly what I'm looking for and easy to understand for a beginner..tip about yarn for stitch marker is perfect. I'm at a loss to understand why anyone would put the cozy in the microwave to heat along with the bowl though. Thanks for this tutorial.
@TheCrochetArchitect

You're very welcome, Mary! I hope you enjoy crocheting many bowl cozies! I find it helpful to remove the really hot bowl from the microwave by using the cozy in the microwave along with the bowl and not having to touch the bowl itself. If you use 100% cotton yarn to make your bowl cozy, it doesn't get damaged in the microwave and stays much colder than the hot bowl! If I try to scoot my hot bowl into the cozy after it's warmed in the microwave, I stand the chance of spilling the bowl contents or dropping the hot bowl or burning my fingers! Happy crocheting to you!

@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect Жыл бұрын
You're very welcome, Wendy! You're right. That yarn may be too soft for these bowl cozies. Try using either Peaches 'n Cream or Sugar 'n Cream cotton worsted weight yarn, if you can find either of them. Walmart usually carries one of them and most of the craft stores carry one of them, as well. You might even think about using a smaller crochet hook if your gauge is on the loose side. I'm glad you like this project! Happy crocheting to you!

Thank you for your kind words about my teaching, Beverly! I'm so glad that my videos are helpful for you! Unfortunately, I don't have a tutorial for an oven mitt, but I did design one years ago. You can see the Panda Oven Mitt that I designed on this Ravelry page: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pretty-panda-oven-mitt. This pattern was published in a Leisure Arts book #6466 called "Potholders & Dishcloths" that is still available as a digital download here: leisurearts.com/crochet-potholders-dishcloths/. I designed several other potholders and dishcloths in that book, as well. I'll think about designing another oven mitt and making a tutorial video for it. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to do all the videos that I (and my viewers) want to make! But I'll put your request on my list of videos to make. Have you tried making some Thermal Stitch Potholders from my video #42? They're nice and thick to protect hands against burns! Happy crocheting to you now and always!

Thanks, Dianna. Yes. Sometimes it takes a smaller hook (and tighter tension) to get the bowl cozy to hold it's shape. Peaches and Creme yarn should work just fine. I'd try it with a size G hook instead of the H hook. Try also to make your stitches tighter with the G hook (but not too tight that you can't insert your hook into them). I hope this helps. Thank you for this very nice bowl cozy pattern. If I wanted to make a bowl cozy for a slightly larger bowl, would it be enough to start out with 10 sc in the first round?
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 2 жыл бұрын
Kiyoko, I wouldn't alter the beginning of the bowl cozy because that will distort the whole thing. This is what I'd do to make it larger instead: Add 1 or 2 more rounds at the end. Round 22 would be [3 sc in next sc, sc in next 23 sc] 4 times: 104 sc. If you choose to add a Round 23, you'll repeat Round 11, which is working even. Then you'll work either edging that you desire (reverse single crochet or slip stitch). Happy crocheting to you!

Thanks! I don't have a calculation to make different size bowl cozies. Basically, you'd add more rounds with increases to make the cozy larger. You can add more increase rounds in the beginning section with 8 increases evenly spaced or add them in the section with 4 increases evenly spaced, depending on how large the bottom and brim/height of the bowl are. I hope this helps.

We don't have worsted weight yarn in my city, do you have any suggestions for another type of yarn that I can use? Can I use a 100% cotton yarn but it's not worsted weight? I need to make 20 of these for my aunt
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect Жыл бұрын
If you use another weight of yarn and a larger or smaller hook, you'll probably have to adjust the pattern to fit the bowl(s). However, if the bowls you're aiming to fit are larger or smaller than the ones I'm using, it might be a good thing to use a thinner or thicker 100% cotton yarn! Unfortunately, I don't have the time to adjust the pattern for you. Can you buy 100% cotton worsted weight yarn online and have it shipped to you? Apparently, Amazon will ship to the Philippines (free with $49+ USD purchase or a charge for less than that). If you have some yarn available to try before you decide, I'd suggest making a sample Microwave Bowl Cozy to see if the size is good with the size yarn you have. I hope this helps! I have a question about the pattern. Should the 3 sc fall in the 2nd sc of the 3 sc in the row 2 rows before? I hope that makes sense. I have the correct number of stitches and am doing the one stitch and moving the stitch marker but my 3 sc "holes" are not lining up with each other throughout the project.
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect Жыл бұрын
Angie, Yes. The 3 sc should fall in the 2nd sc of the 3 sc in the round 2 rounds below. That's why I made the pattern with moving the stitch marker over 1 stitch on the other rounds. Otherwise, the corners wouldn't be straight. Remember that when you're working sc in the round, the stitches mostly line up. They start leaning to the right (if right-handed) just slightly. So check your stitches carefully to make sure they're in the right place. It sounds like you're doing fine, though. If you'd like to contact me through my website, I'd be happy to take a look at a photo of your piece and let you know if your stiches are lined up or not. Happy crocheting, Susan Lowman

@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 2 жыл бұрын
Cindy, I'm sorry to hear that your bowl cozy didn't turn out well. It sounds like your tension was too loose. I'd suggest using a smaller crochet hook. Depending on how large it turned out, you could try 1, 2 or 3 sizes smaller hook. You can even reuse the same yarn from your cozy that's too big. Having loose tension is great for crocheting blankets, but not for this bowl cozy. You want firm stitches for this cozy. Also, did you use worsted weight "cotton" yarn? If you used acrylic or wool, your cozy may stretch too much (and the acrylic yarn will melt when using it on something hot, like a bowl directly out of the microwave). Check your gauge when you begin the cozy again to make sure your stitches are the right size. When you're done crocheting Rnd 5, your piece should measure 3" (7.5cm) in diameter. Also, when you're making your sc, try not to pull up too much on your crochet hook (after inserting the hook and pulling up a loop) or your stitches will be too tall, resulting in your cozy being too big. I hope this helps. Happy crocheting, Susan

One more question about that famous row 11! Do you single crochet, mover marker and then SC in the next 56 stiches to end the row? Same with row 13 - do you SC, move marker, and then crochet in the next 64 stiches? I have made six of these but they still are not coming out exactly right.
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect Жыл бұрын
Jean, Yes. You single crochet in the first stitch, then move the marker to after that stitch and single crochet into the next 56 stitches, which includes the first single crochet. You won't be increasing the stitches, just moving the marker over 1 stitch so the corners line up nicely instead of leaning to the right (for right-handed crocheters) or to the left (for left-handed crocheters). The marker is moved over one stitch on these rounds so the 3 sc in the corners on the following rounds will line up with the center sc in the corners. I hope this helps.

A bloody good idea, this microwave bowl cosy, Susan ! But .. I can't grasp *why* some rows involving tripling the scs have the marker moved after the first one and some before the first one. I must be dumb. Sighh ..
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 2 жыл бұрын
You're NOT dumb! The reason why the stitch marker is moved in Rnd 11 and every repeat of Rnd 11 to "after" the first sc is because you're switching to working 4 increases to form 4 corners of the bowl cozy instead of working 8 increases evenly spaced around to form a circle. If the stitch marker was moved as before, the 4 corners wouldn't stay straight, they'd lean to the right. This is what the pattern says: "Note: Extra stitch at beginning of Rnd 11 does NOT count in stitch count. It is made to keep corner increases lined up." Basically, it's the center sc of the 3 sc in the corners that is now the first sc of the round so the 3 sc on the next increase round (the even-numbered rounds after Rnd 11) can be worked into the center sc of the 3 sc in the corner. I hope this makes sense!

Yes. You should go down a hook size, or even two, if that's what you need to make your bowl cozy the correct size and have it not be flimsy. The gauge for this bowl cozy is Rnds 1-5 = 3" diameter. I don't remember if I said that in the video or not, but it's in the written pattern. The cozy should be fairly dense and tight so your finger can't go through and get burned on the hot bowl. @TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect Жыл бұрын
Is your gauge correct (Rnds 1-5 = 3" diameter)? Or is your gauge a little larger than that? If your gauge/tension is looser, it may not cup. Also, you've just started the section with the corner increases (in Rnds 10, 12, etc). That's where the cupping starts taking shape (Rnds 1-9 should be flat before the corner increases are worked). Perhaps with a few more rounds yours will cup. But my guess is your gauge/tension is too loose. This is a project to have somewhat tight tension. Try going down a hook size or two to start a new bowl cozy and see if that helps. Please let me know if this is helpful for you and if you're able to successfully crochet a bowl cozy! The Crochet Architect It’s hard to burn wool so they make good heat pads for a hot pot to sit on. You might want to felt it a bit though. Incidentally if you have arthritis or a balance problem then three longish handles at equidistant points around the circular fabric tray and held as if they were one handle will keep your bowl upright without spilling even if you’re using the stairs or turning corners quickly. And you can hold it one-handed without spilling too.

Debbie, I'm happy to help! Make sure you're not skipping a stitch anywhere around the piece. You should work 1 sc in the first sc of the 3 sc in the first corner, then drape your marking yarn after that stitch, then sc in each of the sc around, including the first sc that you just worked before the marker. You'll essentially be working into that first stitch twice: once with the first sc and again when you work your last sc into the first sc you worked. I hope this makes sense and that it helps you. @TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 2 жыл бұрын
Dorla, It's possible that you're making your single crochet stitches too short (all stitches can be adjusted a little in height, not just double crochet stitches). Try pulling up on the hook and yarn just a little bit (after inserting your hook and drawing up a loop) to make your stitches a little bit taller. If you're uncertain what I mean, check out my video #7 for the Golden Loop here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m8WfrKaixqi6iYk.html. This video will show you where the Golden Loop is for adjusting the height of your stitches. You might even want to practice making taller stitches on a small project in rows rather than rounds first. Check out my video #5 for the Easy Beginner Single Crochet Coasters here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bbymY5iE2rmxip8.html. That way, you'll be able to fine tune your single crochet stitches first so you can get them a little taller on the Microwave Bowl Cozy, which will help your gauge to be closer to 3" diameter for Rnds 1-5 with either the 5 mm or 5.5 mm hook. Happy crocheting to you!

I'm not sure what you're asking, Kellie. I haven't given my KZfaq videos project numbers. I've given them video numbers.
