i had the 34" version of this. i loved it so much i upgraded to the 38". i wasnt expecting it to be such a noticeable step up in size but man it was. well worth the money. :)

I thing also same. Have you noticed any hdr on games? because 34" doesnt' include hdr at all. And 38" has hdr 600.

@@FRFM00 for HDR. But maybe in a year I will. The 3420dw is so good as it is. I have never thought to myself wish my monitor was a bit wider. And the GeForce experience fake HDR reshade is fine if you really want HDR look in a game. Should I upgrade anyway?

@@FRFM00 maybe not worth it just for HDR since it is only HDR 600? And the increased resolution would not be noticeable (objectively). Not sure what to do.

I've had this monitor for a few months now, you get used to the size difference pretty quick, and I came from an pretty old 27'" 1080p monitor.

see I have a 27 inch 1440p 165hz monitor and while i do love this monitor, I rearranged my room so i can watch youtube and anime from my bed. Its maybe 5-7 feet away but the 27 inch seems too small. Not to mention that the stand doesn't allow the monitor to rotate. I found a good deal on the 34 inch version so I'm going to get it and see if its better.

I am interested to know if you tried increasing the contrast slider to 100 with HDR On. The way the monitor comes to life is quite remarkable. The difference even from 99 to 100 becomes quite obvious, and at 100 the retina burning HDR such as when looking into the sun or fire really does pop. In my opinion anyway compared to any HDR on any other PC monitors I've used.

I would take dedicated GSYNC over 175hz vs 144hz for a few reasons (1) 175hz is "overclocked" which usually brings negative side effects and you're better off running a monitor at its native refresh rate and (2) native GSYNC usually means you get GSYNC capabilities from 1-144fps whereas "GSYNC Compatible" usually only gives you GSYNC down to like ~48fps and then switches to VSYNC at lower frames.

I have the 2k same 27inch IPS 240hz screen and I was worried coming from big 4k TV I be disappointed but genuinely I love it everything just pops and the response times are brilliant at £700 wasn't cheap but it really has made my pc system into different level

I had the 34" version of this - in the older grey angular build. I had to send it back because of the ridiculous back-light bleed.... you're saying they fixed that with this version?

I tried a the Samsung G9 and LG CX 48 and settled for this AW38. As you say, there's nothing that wows you but it does everything it says it will and is a great all rounder.

the thing about wider monitor you mention at around 2:00 is pretty good for your eyes actually, when you have to move them at least a little while gaming for hours.

Thanks for the great review. I was very close to picking up the LG 38GN950 for $2,399 AUD / $1,803.71 USD, but ended up with the Alienware AW3821DW which was on special for end of financial year sale in Australia for $1,574 AUD / $1,183.43. For that kind of price difference, this was easily the 1# 38" Ultrawide for me.

Would be really nice to know which "Scale" value Windows OS shows as "Recommended": is it 100%, 125% or 150% etc. For example on a 27'' 4K monitor 150% scaling is marked as (Recommended) on Windows.

YOu read my mind. I was just in talks with dell and LG , was between this and the CX48. I am somehow leaning towards this. Already have an Oled in the room for movies etc. wanted this for gaming (iRacing and Flightsims) and web usage, and ofcourse some stratergy games. . What are your thoughts?

Well, I hope you're right, because I've been researching, watching reviews and aching for a new monitor for close to a year now and never went anywhere near this monitor, due to the price. I was going to get the LG, but then, this Alienware version went on sale this week for $1000 off! (That's about $2500 CDN down to $1500, directly from Dell.) So, I bit the bullet and bought it last night. With the local dimming zones and nano IPS panel, it hit checkmarks that the LG couldn't and the price made it too good to pass up. Yeah, that sounded arrogant. This monitor is still freaking expensive, but I wanted, as you said, a "Jack of all trades" monitor. I will spend 90% of my time working on it and the rest gaming. When paired with my RTX 3060 OC that comes in this week, this should be a massive improvement over what I previously had and as the centerpiece of my 5, yes 5 monitor setup, it will certainly set itself apart. Thanks for the review that wasn't all technical, because I've watched enough of those. Yours was balanced and provided me with just the right amount of confirmation bias that I was looking for! :D Cheers!

I got this monitor back in January and it has been amazing so far. I found the sweet spot of settings is 'super-fast' set at 120hz. ( I'm running a 3070 with i7-10700K, 32gb memory, 4tb SSD ) I set all games to Ultra and V-Sync ON and i average 80-110fps on most. Some games like FH4 i get up to 119fps on max settings, and others like Ghost Recon Wildlands i can only get 55-85fps depending on scene at Max settings. I will always prioritise graphics as long as its over 55fps haha. I bought this monitor primarily for its high resolution, and HDR600 (so many monitors were only hdr400 and i wouldn't accept that). I'm not a competitive gamer. ( Came from a 60hz 27" 1080p ) LoL When the market calms down eventually and 3080 drop back down to RRP prices ( around $1500 AUD ), i'm planning to swap the g-card out. ps. when i come across the occasional movie/show on Netflix etc. that fills the 21:9 screen ratio fully, its a great experience!

Why v-sync when you have a 30x card ?

Turn v-sync off - you should basically never need it and it does affect processing so you can lose frames from it.

The problem with the LG version of this panel is that it only has 12 dimming zones... I tried the previous model in dark game it's basically useless because of the lack of contrast. Ended up getting this for almost half the price of the Acer... It's great just hard to run lol still waiting on a 3080.

I have the 34" "ultra-wide" and even that felt like a little too wide, so, I can't even begin to imagine 38". I wish the ultra-wide monitors were just a little bit taller. I still love my monitor, though.

i have the lg 38l950g with rtx 3070 and find it run games fine ... dont do a lot of games but forza horizon , and doom look impressive ... like you say hdr nothing to shout about but love that screen real estate of 3840 x 1600 ... ultimate cant wait till you can get an oled that size , dream on ...

Question, when you said in the video that you were dropping frame rate to the low 80’s, was that in 4k resolution or 2k? I’m building my first pc at the moment and I’m trying to decide between this and the LG 38GN950-b. I’m looking to play at 2k resolution and I have a 5800x with an EVGA FTW3 ultra 3080. This thing is GREAT. I use it for work and games in my 3080ti. Really top notch no stutter performance at max quality. 144hz is the sweet spot in my view. Above that difference is impossible to tell...

240 hz is out of this world… tons better than 144hz and so on but impossible to drive at this resolution properly. As you say I think it’s the sweet spot and in combination with a proper Gsync module and Nvidia card hard to beat

Hey man With hdmi plugged in at 3800x1600 my max refresh rate is an embarrassing 30 hz and if i use a display port it only gets up to 60 hz... no where near the advertised 144 hz. How do i get it higher than 60 hz? Any help would be appreciated!

I went for the 38gn950, hdr 600, 160hz, G Sync compatible, I also thought the older 38gl950 had the G Sync module. This is not true picture quality at 144hz though, as no DSC, so full res must be 8 bit and then add dithering if you want HDR on....

38gl950g has the G Sync module and higher overclock.

@@rvs55 Get the Alienware. LG monitors are notorious for QC issues and poor customer service. Dell isn't perfect either but they have a better track record for their monitors. My LG 34GK950f has a vertical line in the middle and it's extremely creaky in all places. I've read Alienware AW3420DW has a better finish and unboxing experience and they monitors tend to come out of the box with less problems. The 38" version should be an improvement.

I purchased the LG38WN95C, found it to be a good mix between work and play @ much less than the LG38GL950. Ultra-wide in my opinion is the way to go & 144 is perfect for non competitive gamers.

Good review of this monitor. I have a 1080ti and was debating on which monitor to buy for it (ineed a new one)... I plan on upgrading when the 40 series comes out, but not until then... so do you think 1440 is better for a 1080ti, or should i future proof and go with this or a 4k display ?

I have a 1080ti with a 7700k cpu. You can swoop these monitors now for $700-$900 used of course but most are still have that 3 year warranty. I should be getting one of these soon and I'll let you know how it runs it. I'm guessing probably not well since essentially it's still pushing 3840 pixels (basically 4k). But I mostly just play arpgs not first person shooters. I would like to get one of the new 45" 240hz OLED panels like the LG 45GR95QE-B or the new Corsair Xeneon but I'm not willing to drop $2,000 on a low ppi 3440x1440 monitor either even if it does have 240hz. Would've been better if these panels were at least 1600p at 175hz - 200hz imho.
