Thanks for the great review. Nice new more easy approach. And at this point I do agree with your title. Absolute beast of a monitor for anyone, doing just about anything. Everything from AAA gaming to non-professional esports to high end photo editing is an absolute banger of an experience at this size, resolution and IQ. 34" UW's and even the G9 just always felt too restricting vertically for me. I've been through 5 monitors in a year (AOC CU34G2X, MSI MAG251RX, Samsung G9, LG 27GN950). All great monitors. But this takes the cake for combining all the best things from those to one neat well rounded package. This one is surely a keeper. For now.

I've been using this LG 38GN950 monitor since launch and over 5000 hours now and I still love it.. 3840x1600 @ 160Hz widescreen gaming is so cool and I use it to watch movies etc as well.. No need for anything newer or better yet, maybe if some better HDR widescreen monitors becomes available for reasonable prices.. Btw, you can change the RGB colors to anything you want, you just need to install the LG UltraGear Control Centre software and use the USB cable to connect to it your PC..

I got this monitor a week ago and I use the LG software to control it without issue. This monitor is absolutely awesome. I don't even understand the low contrast rating as the image is deep and almost OLED like, just with minor IPS glow.
@Dr.WhetFarts
@Dr.WhetFarts Жыл бұрын
No the image is not OLED like. It takes the absolute best VA based TVs with Quantom Dots and Mini LED backlighting to get even close to OLED territory. No IPS/VA monitor is even close. However OLED is not really suited to be used all the time for PC usage, especially not for 8-12 hours daily in static content and you will see brightness adjustments along the way.

could you please mention back light bleed and ips bleed in all of your future reviews? i know that it varies from unit to unit which allows for little conclusions to be drawn but its an aspect thats totally overlooked by pretty much every reviewer.
@autotropicplaybench1819
@autotropicplaybench1819 2 жыл бұрын
I suppose a passing mention would do, or even a separate video setting expectations about the level of "acceptable bleed" and warranty terms per manufacturer even as well as other ways to compensate for possible screen variations (with minor green/orange tints for example without using a colorimeter), but to be honest the monitor lottery for lack of a better word really is at play here that would cause people to have more varied experiences with IPS panels. Case in point, my Dell S2419HM had two dead pixels and some backlight bleed (and warranty can't cover that yet until I have 5 dead pixels, which didn't happen, and the monitor does still work to this day and the backlight bleed is something I never notice day to day), and so my Asus VG259QM (which was bought online with a different seller entirely) meanwhile had no backlight bleed but two dead pixels on different places also existed -- while many reviews say that they didn't have backlight bleed or dead pixels in their unit, at most only a few will point towards greener tint on that monitor that can be fixed using the RGB user controls.

As much as I like the LG and the differences are minor, one reason why I prefer Alienware is the warranty and build quality. If the GSync module does fail, Dell has a bulletproof warranty.

I had AW 34” and had one bad pixel they send me a new monitor before even having to send the old back first. Awesome. Then the Odyssey G9 came out sold the AW and regret set in this monitor has popping and creaking with heat expansion, the stand sucks and can’t hold itself up, and multiple screen glitches even on the latest firmware. Samsung’s support sucks needless to say absolutely helpless.

Excellent review! So hard to find in depth monitor reviews. I was shopping for this and similar 38inch monitors and went with the Acer X38P (g sync, not g sync ultimate version). Just curious why it (Predator X38p) wasn't mentioned. Availability is weird but was able to snipe one on Ebay. It's validated fully G sync supported 1 -175hz. Not talking about the s version that comes with the dreaded g sync module. Either way thank you for your amazing channel and work.

Another great review. I'm a G-Sync module "die hard" but your point about the fan noise and other issues is well taken. As always, I'll mention that it's worth factoring into your decision-making the fact that these LG's only have a 1 year warranty and dead/bright pixel return policy compared to Dell's (AW models) much better 3 year warranty and 0 bright pixel guarantee. Also, I'm glad you told it like it is about VA panels. I still don't get the craze around the G9s.

That's 1 thing I don't like about LG. I like their features more but definitely not their warranty. However whoever releases the first 1600p 38+ inch nano-ips 240Hz monitor, I'm selling this and going for that. And I don't think it'll be long before we get those. Edit: Or OLED. I would LOVE an oled ultrawide.

Just a slight point about 2:51 21:9 3840 x 1600 at 38" is about 110 ppi (basically the same as 21:9 3440 x 1440 at 34"), whereas 32:9 5120 × 1440 at 49" is about 109 ppi, so the difference in pixel density is 100% imperceptible between this and a G9 and every 34" uwqhd monitor to the human eye. Just putting it out there so people interested in getting a 1600p ultrawide aren't doing it for a sharper image than their existing 1440p 34" ultrawides and 49" super ultrawides, given that 38" is the only available size for this resolution atm. If someone where to make a 34" 21:9 3840 x 1600 (which is what I really want) or the equivalent 32:9 49", then that would be a very noticeable increase in PPI. Obviously the benefit is getting the same PPI as a 34" 3440 × 1440 (and 49" 32:9 1440p) with a 38" screen, but it isn't at all sharper.
@Chris-oj7ro
@Chris-oj7ro 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing this out! I've been using a 27" 1440p monitor and looking to go larger, but I don't want to reduce ppi as it has always slightly bothered me that I can make out the pixels in text on the 27". It seems like I won't be able to go larger and have a reduced ppi unless I go to a 4k resolution.

Have you done any kind of "benchmark" to compare FPS impact in games? Everyone seem to only display Ultra-settings benchmarks - but for competitive games and still wanting eye candy (like PUBG casual or Battlefield) one would lower settings to see enemies easier and have more FPS - and for these situations very few ever post any benchmarks comparing different resolutions.

I agree! I'm trying to get better with each video for entertainment AND information without it being too information heavy that it'll lose the viewer. And that's basically it, it's an eyetracker and so far I only use it in star citizen.

I prefer the Alienware over the LG 38" because of the dell warranty service.

Been there, done that... purchased my LG 38GN950 in the UK, looked really nice, enjoyed it for about 3 days before I noticed the dead pixel... shame, but hey, it can happen... sent it back, went for the Alienware instead. Good choice in a few different ways (mainly personal preference). The Alienware version looks much better design wise in my humble opinion, the panel is the same but it comes with G Sync Ultimate, which is better for me (RTX owner).I agree that the RGB is a lot brighter on the LG version, but I can live without it. One very important point is, as I believe someone else mentioned in the comments, is the build quality, mainly the stand. If you are planning on using a monitor arm, the LG will be fine, but the stand on it is super wobbly... any movement on the desk (yes, even typing on your keyboard) will result in monitor movement. The Alienware is rock solid.

I appreciate the comparison vs the Alienware, but if G-Sync failure is a concern, shouldn't warranty be mentioned? AW with 3 years vs LG with 1 year?

the business model 38GN95B-B has a 3 year warranty, and also includes MaxxAudio for the headphone jack and also with the ultra gear logo on the back instead of the LG logo

I love how when you say "for those times when 16:9 isn't wide enough" you show Old School RuneScape gameplay, a game a lot of people play competitively in 4:3 fixed mode because it's optimal

Nope. This one I bought with my money at Costco in March. The 'new' marketing team said they'll be more clear in the beginning, but we'll see... And thank you! :)

Love your reviews, very informative. But are you sure that's 21.7" vertical screen size? Seems more like 21.7" from top of the screen to the table
@Wndrmre
@Wndrmre Жыл бұрын
Yes, it is totally off and inaccurate information! According to LG's spec, the screen vertical measurement should be 15.5". The 21.7" measurement he is referring to is LG's shipping box dimension.
