Awesome video! I've probably watched 5 different videos on how to degree a cam and I could never get it. You explained it so simply that I got it half way through! Keep up the good work.

Absolutely love this video on the Roller cam and at least you do explain the difference between the flat tappet and Roller cams and how important it is to check not only the cam out just to be sure that the cam is in good condition and is what the cam manufacturer says it is.. then how important it is to degree a cam and be sure it is what it is suppose to be.. thanks again for awesome videos and information..

scotty j amen bro ive been to a decent auto tech school however the focus was theroy amd repair not hi performance, but this guy has a formula that just clicks. I did me a 383 sbc for my one ton van 92 g30. Had choppy cam some bolt ons sounded great. Ran nothing like i wanted. Watched me some vids of this man breaking down camshaft knowledge. My rv cammed 2bbl (670cfm holley unit) tbi 350 (aftermarket vortec top end swap as it a 1992) true h.e.i. ign. Is now the torquey beast i was tryin make it. Thanks to vintage iron.

There is no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to engines it's all a matter of experience and education smart or stupid don't really come into the picture if someone has no experience or understanding of a certain aspect or procedure, asking the how and why questions is not stupid. Let me tell you what is stupid, not asking and just working on it or building it by slapping it together with hopes and dreams but no real research or understanding now that is stupid and it happens all the time Reply ·

Myvintageiron7512 thanks for sharing your experience with newbies like me. I have always wanted to rebuild an engine and now I'm going to do it. I'm a perfectionist and have never had enough knowledge for such an undertaking. Your explanation of the workings of an engine and how to verify that components are correct, along with the "why" things are important to verify make sense and prove that if a builder takes the time to check all the vitality important clearances etc. You can and will build a engine better then factory. Thanks again for your videos. For my first rebuild would you recommend that I build my 383 stroker or just keep things simpler and build my olds 455 rocket? I can also build a 289 I got sitting in the shed, just for the experience.

I've only rebuilt a handful of engines, but after doing the fist one and dialing in the cam, I quickly realized what a pain in the ass it was having ALL the pistons in and doing this. From the second on I only put in #1 piston and then dial in the cam. It is, Yeah,,, 8 times easier to roll over the engine!!! lol... I like that you over explain things. Where were you 40 years ago??? ;)

You have great videos. I like how you explain why to do things how/why it works, not just how to do it. Is there any way to roughly figure what porting or even just smoothing out runners on intake and/or exhaust will do for flow # ? Hoped to get to 400hp. With this instruction I think I'm looking at 380hp with aftermarket Vortec heads, 76% eff. 2.02/1.60 valves, 61cc comb. chambers, 185cc intake runners. Thought about just cleaning up the exhaust ports.

getting ready to degree my first engine. one thing that confused me on the video though. i know you said to go past when turning reverse rotation, then turn normal rotation to .050, but when you release the wrench, the degree wheel turns a degree or 2 (assuming the weight of the wrench).. should you always hold chain tension in the direction of normal rotation for an accurate degree readout?

As long as it will all work? What can I get to have the truck sound good and run decent too? Just a everyday driver. And it's 4x4 with 285/75/16 on it. I'm not sure on what gears they put in those trucks but it is a automatic. Is that enough info??

So "degreeing a cam" is to verify that the cam is correct and meets specs. I have seen where someones actually changes the timing with an off set key or some other method of rotating the cam sprocket or crank sprocket to "optimize cam timing". I always thought "degreeing the cam" meant that... :-) Thanks. :-)

About 20 years ago, I built just about the same engine you’re building in this series of videos. I went through all the steps you did with a few minor deviations. Someone gave me a solid four bolt main 350 block and I had it prepped by a machine shop…thorough cleaning, boring .030 over and check the deck and install the cam bearings. The cam bearing install was the only thing I didn’t trust myself to do properly. You never showed how to install the cam bearings and insure the oil holes were lined up. You also neglected to emphasize the importance of gapping the rings on hypereutectic pistons which is different from standard cast pistons (wider gap). High compression ratio with its resultant “pinging” using 92 octane pump gas can be mitigated by using aluminum heads. So far, after checking the cam against the cam card specs, which is nothing more than insurance that all the work you’ve done isn’t wasted in case the cam card is wrong, you still haven’t mentioned other things that needed to be described in the first video…like ignition, heads, longer pushrods required due to a smaller base circle of the cam, headers, and intake system (carb or injection). I guess my suggestion is to tell us everything in the first video about what you’re going to build and for what purpose (what’s it being installed in) and then show us how to do it without being redundant. All that aside you made a series of videos of what I did over twenty years ago…383 stroker in a ’66 Nova with stock rear suspension that would do 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds. Don’t take me the wrong way…it’s a great series of videos I found quite informative and nostalgic. Thanks for posting. I hope people come to you to have their engines built. You definitely know what you’re doing.

Excellent video! I am planning to stroke my 68 Pontiac 350 out to a 383 with a balanced rotary kit. My engine is numbers matching in a 1968 Firebird. The heads have been rebuilt with hardened seats. They are stamped #17 which are 72cc 1.96 / 1.66. I plan to use flat top pistons and want to use a roller cam. Given these perimeters, what would be the best RPM target and Cam selection. Since it took 6 weeks to deliver the cam, when you ordered the cam did it state in fine print that you should wait 4-6 weeks for delivery, due to them having to manufacture the cam first? I know there's some subframe connectors that are made to order, this is so they don't have a bunch of metal stock on hand unpainted (due to customer preference on color, they can't paint them until ordered of course) that will degrade in quality from moisture and whatnot from just sitting around in a warehouse unpainted. Camshafts are the same way, they're precision products that they don't want sitting around with the possibility of getting dinged up in storage, they make either steel or cast iron parts that can't be painted so they don't want the rotating journals to rust from just sitting around. Also it saves them money since they'll produce cams only on demand and preorder, so they're not making a bunch of cams no one wants to use anymore.

Hi, I've just disassembled my small block 400 that I'm getting ready to rebuild it and start ordering parts. After viewing your video on what length connecting rods to use, I'm just wanting to know if I should go with the 5.700 that you recommend instead of the 5.565 that came out of it. Will it affect the TDC where I will have to go with shorter pistons because I went with the longer rod or will I be safe on the clearance. Thanks. Really enjoy your videos.

What's the clearance on cam bearing for your oil clearance does that mater?
@Myvintageiron7512
@Myvintageiron7512 7 жыл бұрын
yes If reusing the camshaft it is advisable to install new bearings and also mic the cam main journals to make sure they are not worn, new cam bearings (if installed correctly) are very consistent size wise and give good oil clearance as long as the cam goes in with no binding they will be fine the cam bearings have very little stress on them and also remember the cam rotates 1/2 the speed of the crankshaft so it turns slow (Less bearing stress)

seeing u only need TDC on #1 when degreeing the cam, wouldn't it b easier to rotate the crank if #1 and #2 pistons were installed, it seems like ur sorta struggling with all the pistons installed, hopefully u don't need to check every lobe if #1 is correct

Great tutorial my friend 👍. I'm building my LT1 in my 94 Pontiac Trans am. I'm new at degreeing a camshaft... I'm going to be running a comp cam kit.. my question to you is ??? I'm going to be running hydraulic roller lifter's with a roller comp cam. Is it good to offset the roller rockers?? For instance.. 1.5 roller rockers on intake and 1.6 roller rockers on exhaust??? 2nd question??? Do you recommend LS 7 pushrods in my LT1??? Or just plain LT1 pushrods????

you can use 1.5/1.6 rockers to get desired lift your LT pushrods should be fine

For the dial gauge you are running on the cam, is it contacting a mechanical lifter or the actual cam lobe? My dial gauge isn't long enough to hit the cam lobe, do I need another one or can I use a mechanical (not hydraulic) lifter to get measurements? Also, your videos are great to watch, keep it up!
