This is the greatest 800m race of the Olympics imo. So many contenders / legends. 5 of these athletes won medals at major's.

She wasn't the Russian failed to close the inside. She benefitted from bad positional running on the bend and in the straight.

She used drugs to deny the deserving winner Nurutdinova her rightful gold medal. Disgraceful.

To Tony Padillo: Do you have proof? Cause this is completely new to me. Van Langen's career was, to her immense frustration, cut short because of a neverending story of injuries. She already had those problems during her younger years. Despite that, Van Langen was already 4th in Split (Euro 1990), with 3 Eastern Euopean medal winners before her (Wachtel, Wodars and… Nurutdinova), who all got caught with using drugs later on in their career. Yes, indeed, among them was your 'deserving winner' Nurutdinova. The Dutch telly made a documentary, long time ago, about the 3 medal winners of this race in 1992, because they all had an emotional story to tell. IIRC, they even came together in Barcelona, and at a certain point Nurutdinova became emotional and began to cry, maybe because of a mixture of emotions… having the chance to win gold but also being forced to join the doping programme… all that might have come together. I'm not sure anymore if they 'touched' the sensitive doping story in that documentary though. So, I won't accuse Nurutdinova of not deserving her silver medal here. Anway, in that documentary, Van Langen comforted her. It was quite a touching documentary, also because of Quirot's truly tragical story of the kitchen fire and the loss of her premature baby daughter, in 1993. She fought back though like a true heroine. I wonder: maybe you did confuse Van Langen with another Dutch gold medal winner, Ria Stalman (1984, discus)? In 2016, she admitted she used doping, also before the Olympics of 1984... this message ended the good relationship between Stalman and Van Langen. Stalman's excuse was "everybody was on doping, so why should not I use it?" Van Langen felt deeply offended by that, also on behalf of all athletes who compete clean, and do their utmost to stay clean their entire career, despite the temptation(s).

@@tonypadilla738 You're kidding right? It was Nurutdinova who got busted at the World Championships the following year and that was the end for her.

Ana Quirot from Cuba seemed passive and indecisive. I was expecting for her to pounce at 600-700 but she held back. Hands held to my head! Van Langen seized the one opportunity she had!

Конечно, грубая ошибка - когда ты делаешь длинный финиш, долго лидируя и бежишь последние десятки метров на пределе сил - сместиться вправо и освободить первую дорожку для соперниц, сохранивших силы для ускорения.

Nurutdinova made two mistakes in this race. Nurutdinova's first mistake was too fast on the first lap. Nurutdinova's second mistake was opening the inside in the final 100m. This is what Nurutdinova lost to Ellen van Langen.
