I've combined her first attempt free skate and her re-skate into one video clip: • Tonya Harding (USA) - ...
Hamar, NORWAY - 1994 Lillehammer, Figure Skating, Ladies' Free Skate - Tonya Harding of the United States had skate lace problems when her original laces broke during the 6-minute warm up. Her team did not have a proper spare lace for this kind of an emergency and ended up using whatever they could find, which apparently was not long enough for her to properly tie her skate properly. In order to avoid being disqualified for not getting into her starting position within the 2 minutes after they announced her name, she would rush out ill prepared and started her routine. She would bail out of the opening triple Lutz and then go to the referee to show the referee her problem. She would be allowed time to fix her lace problem. It seemed that Tonya expected only a small break to change her lace and then go back out to skate, but the announcer came on and announced that she would be allowed to reskate at the end of the group and immediately called out Josee Chouinard of Canada to skate.

To get to this level, Olympic-level, from such poor and humble beginnings, is incredible. Why do ppl think Nancy was this millionaire bimbo? Her personality wasn’t all that great but she had a humble beginning as well. Her dad was the sole breadwinner working as a plumber, while her mom was blind. Nancy basically raised herself into skating. The only reason why she had money was because her talent earned her sponsorships, unlike Tonya, who smoked 2 packs a day.

@@Onniesprairiegarden The announcer is former Olympic gold medalist Dick Button. So he knows all too well what is going on. More than likely, a long time ago, professionals probably came to her to offer their services, and instead of taking them up on their offer, she told them to go fuck off. The only reason she keeps getting in the competitions is because of her triple axel. Nothing else. It's all she has. And well, if you have a shitty attitude, then no one is going to risk endorsing you. She has always been a mess, always been undisciplined, lacked hard work ethics, planning and had poor choices in the company she keeps. Her coach was probably always getting screamed at and was rattled herself. Once Tonya was banned for life, I bet the whole figure skating body made a huge sigh of relief and had to create rules now that you had to have a certified manager to get in from here on out.

I never paid much attention to figure skating until Harding came along. She was a true American underdog, fighting headwinds all the way and succeeding through sheer will. Surrounded by trash and bozos, denigrated by the mucky-mucks in her sport, getting where she did is a hell of a lot more inspiring than all the well-off kids whose parents loved and supported them, who looked and acted the ice-princess part. She put skating on the map for the Jerry Springer crowd. She was a good skater, not spectacular. She didn't have much money or support. No world class athlete at that level of competition should ever have an equipment failure so basic. That said, the traditional skating crowd was snooty. Nancy K was their kind of girl, Tonya was not. Nancy was graceful and smooth, Tonya was more athletic and less polished. To me, Nancy came off as entitled, but over all she was the better performer because she came ready. She even overcame Tonya's assault and competed. In other words, she was mentally tougher.

This young lady was no angel, she hung out with the wrong people, and should have focused on her skating, equipment and left the scum bags alone, and maybe, just maybe, history would have been written different. She was a strong, skilled skater and had the spunk to make it happen, but instead she chose a different path. Ms. L. Churchill

@@chattahuffman5117 You're doing it now. That's all I need to know. Funny thing is, some people don't keep in mind that when people like Tonya lived around people who do nothing but hold her back. Being abusive and such. That info doesn't absolve, but it does show how this all got started and why Tonya eventually got distance from her family. Abusive people always look out for their own selfish wishes and find reason to take it out on the closest person near them. Give these people too much leeway, and they can even wreck your life. There was something there that could have been with Tonya. Someone who could pull off a triple axel while she was fighting her distress needed time to heal and practice her craft. She just needed to separate herself from the terrible people who had problems they didn't want to bother solving.

@@leon4000 Kind of hard not to laugh when you make ridiculous comments. That isn't being smug. You should probably learn the definition of a word before you use it. Also, you very much are making excuses. Past incidence, regardless, does not excuse future behavior. You can write paragraphs to your hearts content. Don't care. My statement stands.

Triple Lutz it was a miracle that Nancy recovered quickly. They intended to disable her. She could have ended up in a wheelchair for the rest of her life, relying on painkillers just to get through the day. Not to mention the fact that the assailant’s actions in that fight-or-flight moment would have been completely unpredictable. They did this so that Tonya had a better chance at winning a game. Please don’t downplay how shitty that is just because the outcome was less horrific than they had planned.

No body liked her because she made sure of it with her shitty attitude and thinking she was so much better than anyone else. If she had more respect for those around her, maybe she could have gotten some in return. But nope, she will always be that drunk trailer trash that had that one dance with the prom king and it be the only defining moment of her life.
