Geneva, SWITZERLAND - 1986 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Long Program - First, a profile on Katarina Witt of East Germany, followed by her Long Program, which she won, earning two 6.0s for Artistic Impression. Because of her 4th Placement in the Short Program, she was only able to pull up from 4th to 2nd Place overall.

Very true, and she always seemed to enjoy her skating so much. She was a breath oh fresh air for the sport.

Katarina was so captivating! This performance was sophisticated and highlighted by solid jumps and fascinating choreography. It was fun, sensuous and skated with conviction.

表現力や女性らしい動き、綿密なプログラムの高度さ、に関しては、彼女よりも上が居ます（フレミング、リン、サムナーズ等）。しかしプロポーションの良さとダイナミックさ、それを土台にしたショーとしての素晴らしさを考慮すると、彼女が史上ナンバーワンを競うスケーターで有る事は疑いありません。

Wie blind muss man sein. Technisch waren einige besser, aber künstlerisch keine. Sumners hatte null Gefühl für Musik, Thomas war noch schlimmer, total unmusikalisch.

This was a pretty program. Katarina WASN'T challenging herself this year. Her FIGURES weren't good..She botched her (very easy) Triple Jump combination in the Short..and No triple loop in 86. She was clean here but it was just very pretty. The Judges were in her "back pocket" back then.

I just love the look and expression on Katarina's face as she watched Debi's LP and realize she could not win this World title. Debi would not let Katarina's rinkside presence intimidate her from winning her first and only World title. The look of exasperation on Katarina's face was pure pleasure for me.

@@sibylleschefczik3544 Witt lost this 1986 World title to Debi Thomas, but she won the following two years. Also, you can check Debi's long program in 1986 World final and camera shows how upset Katarina is knowing she will lose to Debi that year.

DEBI, was wonderful when she was "on." She won her 86/88 National Championships fairly because she was the most consistent Skater. SAME with her 1986 World Championships Gold Medal---that year, DEBI was more consistent than KATARINA, who did badly in FIGURES..Botched her Short Program Triple Jump combination AND she hadn't had a Triple Loop that year. Her Long Program was pretty, but Unchallenging. Debi deserved the win.

At least Debi didn't hand this Championship to Katarina on a silver platter. Being in 4th place, it was very unlikely that Katarina would get the gold here. Scott says Katarina hit the second triple toe loop. It was double-footed. I am sure Jutta told Katarina to always act like she landed the jump cleanly even if she two-footed it. It worked on Scott.

@yescanto "That supposed last combination" was a Triple Salchow/half Loop/Double Flip. It was performed correctly. Katarina used it through her career as an upgrade to a Triple Salchow/Double Toe. Up until the new scoring system, it was completely fair game to place a half loop between jumps and connect it with a flip or salchow. Maria Butyrskaya did a Triple Toe/half loop/Triple Salchow in many of her long programs in the 90s and 00s.

Gorgeous Katarina.. She possessed all the 'it' features that were synonymous with beauty and sex appeal in the 80s.. She was a perfect match between Natassja Kinski and Brooke Shields.

even she doesn't won this competition, those artistic points tells everything. she was exquisite, unique, elegant and classy performer. no one coudn't be better in artistic level. and she always smile. i don't remember any situation that she wasn't smile. thank you again, 3Axel1996.

Totally agree with Ravenswitch.When you watch the other skaters and compare them to Katarina they look like cardboard,merely going through the programme.Katarina was Elegant,with a great artistic flair.She performed the jumps just as good as all the others.She was more than just a skater,she was a Ballerina on ice.As for the comments by OFFICEADICT33 ,total nonsense.You should look at her short programme in the 1988 Olympics, it is full of ELEGANCE and class.She was in a class of her own.

Who cares, he’s a rude jack-@ss. I was skating on the same rink he coached at in the 1990’s, he thought adult skating was a waste of time and $ because adult skaters can not go to worlds or Olympic.

The queen of 2 foot skating. Never any complicated entrances to jumps. Simple skating. I laugh when Scott says she is a technical skater.

Her programs don't stand up to the test of time very well, they just look weak, juvenile , and with lazy choreography. If you look at Denise Beillman's skating it is still very enjoyable to watch.

Agreed. I've been watching Katrina's skates from her amateur days and I have to say I wonder what all the fuss was about. Other than being pretty, I don't think she was that captivating as a competitor and a performer. (Her performances as a professional in the late 1990's were actually very nice). But when Olympic eligible? Overrated and full of herself.
