I'm sure that for most of you, 3D Pinball Space Cadet needs no introduction. But while this game might be very simple to play, it's origin story is anything but. Did you know that the origins of this game can be traced all the way back to DOOM? Or that Space Cadet was actually a slimmed down version of a much larger game? A game that had a squeal? In today's video, I'll be discussing the origins of Space Cadet Pinball.

Update: What I said at 11:29 isn't entirely accurate, as the blog post I was quoting from wasn't entirely accurate either. There were working 64-bit versions of Space Cadet Pinball. What's really funny about Microsoft's fixation with Doom and Doom 95 is that it lead directly to Gabe Newell quitting his cushy Microsoft job to found Valve Software and make Half-Life.

Fun fact: 3D Pinball runs on Windows 3.x if you have Win32s installed, and it runs natively on Windows NT 3.51 as well.

I remember when my mom got me my first Desktop with XP on it. This was cutting edge graphics lol we have come very far. Also I had no idea they had a full game until now will have to look it up. Love the Documentary style videos very informative and well executed keep it up!

Nikola Opric: I have very strong memories of this game! I actually never found out that it was basically a cut down version of a much larger video game (which is named Full Tilt! Pinball) until i watched LGR's video on the game. Actual Fun Fact #1: When you launch the game on Windows Vista x64 up to Windows 10 x64, something interesting happens, instead of the loading/waiting sequence (that lasted for about 5 seconds) in Windows XP and older, (Down to Windows 95 of course) it gets skipped outright, while this is happening, both the sounds for "Wait" and "Ready" (I actually don't know the actual names for these sounds, if you do know the actual names for these sounds, please tell me by replying) plays at the exact same time, instead of the "Wait" sound being played first and then the "Ready" sound second. Actual Fun Fact #2: There was an attempt at remaking/remastering the game called "Pinball Star" but of course it failed miserably. Once again i'd like to thank the creator and uploader Michael for this very informative video and giving this wonderful game more attention (along with LGR)! Thank you so much once again!

Oh my freaking god - Full Tilt Pinball! I've had snippets of memories of this game for years in my kid brain and I couldn't figure out what it was. I knew Space Cadet reminded me of something I'd played when I was far, far younger.

Yes! It's amazing when you find out that 3D Pinball was essentially like a demo of Full Tilt Pinball. I didn't know it either until I started researching for this video.

remember, vista had a lot more compatibility problems than later nt6 versions, even solitare could BSOD the system in some cases

It's obvious if the 32-Bit version works on 64-Bit OS, but the Microsoft team tried to port the game to a 64-Bit version for Windows Vista 64-Bit, but they failed so they scrapped it

That's because if you run a 32-bit program on a 64-bit system, it runs through a compatibility layer.

Yeah, it works on my old Windows 7 laptop running Windows 10. And there's no problem like crashing or glitches while playing Pinball 3D from my Windows XP virtual machine hard disk drive.

It's not running natively 64 bit then. It's running in something called WoW64 (Windows on Windows), a compatibility layer for 32 bits programs to run under a 64 bit operating system.

There are more than just visual differences in the Full Tilt! version of the game. You have more music, even more refined physics and rules that allow for longer play sessions, and even a multiball mode that helps you finish missions more quickly.

Can you do a video on how Microsoft's monopoly destroyed Netscape? Like how they forced it to be installed with the IE4 desktop update, and many programs would require Internet Explorer. The programs I know that require IE are Office 2000 and Visual Basic 6.0. I have an install of Windows 95 RTM (installed from floppy) with NO Internet Explorer at all. Only Firefox, Thunderbird, and SeaMonkey.

I never got to play it even if I had it because I could never use the left or right flipper! I have no idea why but it happened on every machine I try to play it on ( yes I did try 64bit and 32bit version but none of them worked) 🤔

I would like to know the story behind the version I'm currently running on 64 bit windows 10, was the problem with 64 bits fixed in the game itself? Or did windows manage to get compatibility mode done in a way that incidentally fixed it some time after Vista?

They couldn't get the game to run as a native 64-bit application, which they wanted every built-in application to run as in an effort to modernise the OS. When you run the game on 64-bit Windows, you are running it via WoW (Windows on Windows) which is a simulated 32-bit environment.

3D Pinball Space Cadet was removed from Windows Vista because none of the programmers knew how to properly port the game to the 64-bit architecture (AMD64 or x86-x64 to be presice) which made the game totally unplayable. (11:16)

They killed of vista because they couldnt make a x86_64 port of pinball... Why didn't they just bundle the x86 version, for people still on 32 bit machines, AND 32 BIT PROGRAMS WORK ON 64 BIT MACHINES

Honestly my Windows Vista (previously Windows XP) has horrible graphics so I would rather change it to Windows 95 with a disc on EBay (Of course I don’t have one)
