@@TheTimmy376 It's never great to have Doppelmayr existing any more unless if they go back to building their 1960's/70's/80's/90's systems again. D-Lines are fucking ugly, mainstream, digitalized, invasive and un-alpine lifts and Uni-G's are fucking boring. I do agree that some Uni-G's integrate well into the mountain, but a D-Line? PAH!!!!

I can respect your admiration of classic lifts. Beauty, of course, is in the eye of the beholder - nevertheless I don't think it's fair to categorically dismiss modern Doppelmayr lifts in the way that you describe. Many such lifts demonstrate very impressive specifications and features, even if you don't agree with some engineering and technology decisions. This indeed affords Doppelmayr a definite raison d'etre in today's market. Also, let's please keep this comment section civil.

@@TheTimmy376 Maybe I am being a bit angry yes but after how many beautiful and mechanically different ropeways have been destroyed, all for ropeways that are mechanically the same? Grrrrrrrrrr... but in all seriousness Modern D-Lines ARE rammed with tech and are digitalized and they are too city-like, and in my opinion, don't integrate well into the mountain at all. Some D-Lines have stuff like speakers in the cabins, occupancy sensors, AURO(Autonomous Ropeway Operation), heated seats(which have now become a requirement), and other un-alpine tech rammed into them which makes them much more city-like and less alpine, along with their ugly city-like appearance. And their huge capacity does nothing more than bring on economic wars as ski resorts are often economically forced to replace their wonderful old lifts with horrible modern D-Line or 10-passenger gondola lifts/6-8 passenger detachable chairlifts as they make more money more quickly than do the jewellry from the 20th century. Capacity expansion causes nothing but suffering and chaos. It's excessive redevelopment, it gives people stupid reasons to complain just because the older lifts don't have the useless things that a modern one does, it makes the nostalgic people and enthusiasts unhappy and the way the modern lifts are architectured is disgraceful. And all the digital tech put in the modern lifts totally takes away the feeling of being in an alpine as well. And then there's obviously mechanical variety which modern lifts have none of and old lifts do and that in my belief is infinitely more important than modern advantage and higher capacity. The modernization is excessive enough that the mountains have become some sort of playground for Doppelmayr and the ropeway authorities, destroying these, destroying those, replacing them all with boring identical ugly mainstream lifts... Pfft. Ropeways will literally never be interesting if they are all the same and that's how Doppelmayr wants it to be. I intend to take action against the modernization in the future as mechanical variety and alpine appearance matters. Not mainstream crap that isn't even special any more and is just hideous in my opinion. Edit: With regards to Uni-G lifts, they are boring, REALLY boring and quite hateable to be honest. But unlike the D-Line they have no tech or modern standards in them and they integrate more nicely into the mountain than will ever a D-Line or some digital city-like scrap heap such as that built in the D-Line Era...

Your model is awesome, and the fact that you even implemented a spacer is surprising ! I was looking to do the same with a simple MGD, and your motors seem quite strong, I was wondering where did you buy them ?
@TheTimmy376
@TheTimmy376 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The spacer system is kind of a necessity. Slippage under the conveyors is very small, but even a fraction of a second adds up to misaligned cars, and eventually collisions in the terminals. This happens sooner than you might think, because as you may have noticed, the cabins are already packed very close together in the terminal. To answer your question: the conveyor motors (of which there are 3 in each terminal) are stepper motors of type NEMA 17 with 4 kg*cm torque, the main drive motor is a stepper of type NEMA 23 with 19 kg*cm torque. You can find these on ebay, or in stores that sell parts for 3D printers and CNC machines.

@TheTimmy376
@TheTimmy376 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Of course, nothing is ever 100% reliable. I'd say this system has a mean time between failures (MTBF) of 3 to 4 hours, by far the most common failure mode being haul rope derailment at the attach/detach bullwheels. If the operator notices this right away and hits the emergency stop, it is not a problem - if not, it usually results in a pile-up of cabins at the entry or exit of the terminal. This in turn causes other problems: very rapid conveyor tire wear (gone in a few minutes) as the tires' surface grinds on the carriages which are jammed, the rubber lining in the grip jaws wearing out equally quickly, and even haul rope slippage. You shouldn't walk away from the system and just expect it to keep running fine, but its failure modes are consistent and somewhat predictable.
@matlegofan

The 3d printing looks like it made it a lot sturdier than regular legos
@TheTimmy376
@TheTimmy376 2 жыл бұрын
That's right, there's certainly a world of difference between the two in terms of sturdiness. However, structural rigidity is provided largely by aluminum T-slot extrusions and round bars, rather than 3d-printed components.
@charliesrandomthings5457

Hey! i have recently been trying to 3d print an aerial tramway with pulse cabins, but a 3s with larger cabins and a ~.5lb capacty, so that i might be able to set it up as a mailbox replacement (because i'm too lazy to get into my snow gear in the winter) your grip design and support design looks like if modified and/or scaled up, they would work well. (especially with metal reinforcement).
@TheTimmy376
@TheTimmy376 2 жыл бұрын
Who would've thought someone would one day find an actual purpose for such a system :) In terms of towers and terminal design: I'm convinced that if aluminum is used in the right places (or perhaps steel, but of course it'll be harder to work) to provide structural rigidity, then 3D-printed parts would certainly serve your purpose well. Keep in mind that as the specs of your system increase (length, tension, capacity, etc.), you must rely less and less on the 3d-printed parts as structural members. Using ~8mm dia 6082 aluminum (which we used to form the four legs of this lift's tower), you will be able to build a system of similar length which will be able to carry loads quite a bit higher than 0.5 lbs. Based on experience, I would advise strongly against PLA if you want your construction to last through a hot summer's day... Out of curiosity, are you designing a circulating or shuttling aerial tram? In any case, keep me updated, I'm very interested.
@charliesrandomthings5457
@charliesrandomthings5457 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheTimmy376 circulating v shuttling? Circulating being jig-back? That would be the ideal mechanism to use for balance. Also, small diameter metal aircraft wire would likely be used as the main cable material, anchored into the ground directly at the base of the mechanism, In order to keep tension. Also, I would like the cabins to be able to detach from the support cables, and eventually print a mod to make the high tension cables work with the gondola style station, and a nylon haul rope

Impressive attentiveness! To answer your question... well... It's complicated. This whole system is designed as a hobby project. There's just this one, and to be frank, it's not presently in a shape that we can stand behind selling it, in terms of confidence about its durability. To get the design in such shape and produce an additional copy would require quite a few more man-hours, which would have to be funded. @vonrollskyway1 2 жыл бұрын
Very nice. Can it carry any weight?
@TheTimmy376
@TheTimmy376 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it can carry some weight, as a matter of fact. Tension on the track ropes is provided by two 7-kg (15-lb) counterweights at the top terminal, which is enough to allow a few cabins to be loaded to roughly 500 grams (18 oz). Any more, and the cable sag would cause a deflection of more than a few degrees at the support tower, which would be unsafe as the cabins would have to negotiate a "bump". The cabins themselves weigh 92 grams each.
@vonrollskyway1
@vonrollskyway1 2 жыл бұрын

How does work the grip?
@TheTimmy376
@TheTimmy376 2 жыл бұрын
The grip is what I call a "pincer grip". In the center of the carriage (Laufwerk) is a haul rope grip (Klemme), consisting of three longitudinally arranged hinged jaws (Klemmbacken), of which the middle one is opposed. All three are loaded by rubber bands to keep them closed, pressing against each other, and pinching the haul rope between them. For attaching and detaching, these jaws are opened by integrated levers (Kuppelhebel) visibly protruding from the bottom of the carriage, which are actuated by pressing inward. This is in turn accomplished by dedicated detachment rails (Kuppelstellen) mounted far forward in the terminals, shaped to gently but completely force open the jaws and release them as the carriage moves through. Once the carriage reaches the halfway point of such detachment rail, the jaws are fully open, at which point the large vertical attach/detach bullwheels (Kuppelscheiben) deflect the haul rope right into the jaws, or out of the way respectively. This process is perhaps most clearly seen at 00:43.

What you're seeing there is the fact that the Lego gears we use have a ratio of 1.667:1. This has two reasons: the first is protection of intellectual property, the second is about protecting people from disappointment: having the drawings is one thing, but getting the system running and keeping it working requires constant attention and deep knowledge of the design and the engineering decisions underlying it. By simply sharing the STL files with a "good luck", we would be setting people up for disappointment. Sorry, I can imagine this isn't the answer you were hoping for. However, we encourage you to design and build your own system. Keep in mind that it doesn't need to be a complicated detachable.
