Graffiti is an essential part of the urban landscape, but I have not included it in my recent projects as I find it challenging to model. The most common methods for simulating graffiti are to either hand paint the detail or use water slide decals. Both of these methods work well in larger scales but pose challenges in N scale. Hand painting small details require a steady hand and are time intensive. Water slide decals traditionally need to be applied to glossy surfaces and then dulled; this can ruin the look of delicate textures and details.
This small project was a proof of concept to show that I could manufacture credible graffiti stencils using my 3D printer and that I could generate enough variety through colour and placement to create acceptable results that were straightforward to reproduce replicate quickly.
I'm pleased with the first round of results. Moving forward, I will add some tags with a fine tip pen and additional stencilled designs.
