I really love that this creates a cool new workflow for a hybrid of digital and analog sculpting. Starting with a ZBrush sculpt, 3d printing the mold, casting clay in the mold, and then finishing the surface using traditional sculpting techniques to create fine wrinkles, pores, etc. before final molding/casting. Very cool stuff, thanks for sharing this!

Here I thought I was clever 3D printing mold walls for pouring silicone molds, so I can minimize the amount of material I use. Then you guys come along... It's so interesting seeing 3D printing used in masks and makeup appliances. I know the creature shop on Star Trek is doing something similar now - at least, starting with 3D prints and then doing conventional moldmaking and casting off that. Fascinating stuff!

Now all you have to do is laser scan the actors face and print that as a third piece to enclose the mold. Pour in silicone and you have a full custom appliance!

What I was thinking about doing is getting the model and using it to cut into something like a cube. I know there's a process of using a model to cut into another model with and from that shape it up into something you can print. Something I want to try once I get my printer

Wonderful stuff.. especially the bit about boolling a negative mold from your positive geometry. And I'd love to have a printer that big. As it is, I'm having to split my masks up into eight pieces just to fit them together, and it is not fun. Running into warping and inconsistencies this way.

Is it easier to print something, do the cleanup and finishing, and then make a mold of it; or to just print a mold and do the cleanup finishing in the mold or after casting the piece? Or it depends on the quality of the finished part that you are looking for? I couldn't even see the print lines on the mask in the video.

Mike Martinez I know this comment is 2 years old, but incase people see this and are also wondering. Sculpt the face in Zbrush then print it on a 3D printer. Once it’s printed, you can then mold it. Once it’s cured, take the 3D print out and then you’re left with a negative to work with.

Frank, dead on. Been using a Lulzbot Taz 5 and designing new toys.. Johnny West fan here. I started about a year ago on the idea of making 3d designs of my molds and printing them in pla and people thought I was whacked. Definitely workable but thought I was the only one.. BTW, excellent with the Wax!

I wonder is it possible to make this printer smart? For example if you were able to weigh the filament roll, if it falls under a set value, the printer would send a message to someone's phone telling him to replace the roll. And if the weight of a roll reaches a critical setting stop printing when the roll is almost empty. I also wonder what the maximum size would be in a carbon printer. That would reduce the print time quite a lot.

Now Mission impossible is near. Now we only need a printer that automatically colors silicone masks. Silicone masks are 600+ $ price range. I believe most of it comes from artist time needed to complete it. Which part of the process takes most time? Painting it? Molding? 50% & 50%?

Very interesting process, Frank. I didn't know the Hyperflesh guys were using this to make their awesome masks. I had a laugh when i saw the first Martian sole mold, where you forgot to invert the NASA logo. I can't count the times i had to redo stuff because i had made the same mistakes. I see you fixed it in the angled mold. When you cast this urethane sole do you intend to line fabric on the top while its not cured to get a better bond ?

"This guy" is running a business ... he needs all of those machines and things to work on costumes and props he is building for movies, games, statues, etc. He showed the blade he printed for Blizzard Entertainment in the video and also said that they expanded again. Tested on the other hand is probably financing itself through a subscriber system (40$/year), ads on YT (on the videos and product placements), merch, etc. They probably get a some of the stuff they are showing for that purpose and have to send it back afterwards or get some of the travel costs taken care of by the company that invitred them. Soooo ... the money basically just turns up at their door ... the magical world of BUISNESS :D

I have been in some small ventures and had associates in bigger ventures around technologies starting in the 1980's. When you are the only business "in town" that can do something new and specialized, it's surprising how in demand you can be. Eventually others catch on, equipment gets cheaper from multiple new sources and you have to keep two steps ahead with the next big (and difficult to master) thing or you're competing only on price. Congrats to this fellow. It's a leap to invest in something like that printer and the time to learn it without making a profit.
