In today's episode, Christian is joined by Jon Shanahan of The Kavalier to review and analyze the Shinola Lake Superior Automatic and Runwell Sport Chronograph. Shinola is a brand that has very much committed their entire marketing strategy and brand message to being Made in the USA, specifically in Detroit, and while there has certainly been some controversy surrounding that, it's Jon's experience learning very specifically about American Made companies that will, hopefully, lend some perspective here.
First, we have the Runwell Chronograph, priced at $1,125. The blacked out case and roe gold bezel are certainly subjective as a design, but what is pretty objective is the general tinny, hollow feeling of the Runwell's bracelet and bezel action. The chronograph function, as well, felt very jittery, and seemed to move very much at its own pace during the reset. Speaking of the reset, the version we reviewed came misaligned which, though not entirely unheard of in more affordable watches, is really unacceptable at the $1k+ price point.
Then we have the Lake Superior Automatic, priced at $1,450 running the SW200 automatic movement. We have the "Gift Set" version, which should in theory have pretty impressive packaging, but it ultimately doesn't offer much that can't also be found in watches coming in at considerably less. The design, too, suffers the fate of so many dive watches in that it's more or less a Rolex Submariner with a couple of aesthetic changes which, though arguably the theme of a divers watch anyway, is still kind of depressing at almost $1,500.

I'm from Detroit. My whole family is born and bred there. I love the brand for what it is and for what it stands for. It's like repping your sports team, this brand is very similar to that analogy. While the sport gurus and armchair sprots/watch connoisseurs trash your team/watch > you don't change or rethink your love for the San Diego Padres (or whomever) because they're suck, you love em' because xyz. I'd rather have a Shinola than a French watch that's "better" yet means absolutely nothing to me. All the hate on Shinola only makes me embrace them more. Just my personal opinion. If you're looking for the best micro brand, then maybe Shinola is or isn't for you. Lot's of idiosyncrasies to factor. Great video for what it presents, none the less.

Yes, I’m from Michigan and yes I own two Shinola watches, but as unbiased as I can possibly be, you lost me with the bad packaging bit. What is special about the Marnaut packaging lol? And the first brand (whatever it’s name is) has better packaging? It’s just a wooden box? That’s actually almost identical to what Shinola watches usually come with. It’s like you were looking for things to have an issue with. I personally think the two watches you purchased are some of the least appealing watches they make. If I had that bad of taste I wouldn’t like anything I bought either.

I like how you spend the entire video complaining that Shinola isn't entirely made in America and that it's over priced... But then you recommend Oris which has nothing to do with America and is three times the price.
@Mr20001
@Mr20001 2 жыл бұрын
I think the reasoning for this is because Oris doesn’t (at least not to my knowledge) claim to he “made in America”, like Shinola does. The reality is that Shinola watches are ASSEMBLED in America of parts from other countries. There really is a difference, however, it doesn’t bother me in the least. Watch enthusiasts that hate on Shinola never have anything new to say. Just the same old rhetoric over and over again - “But it’s not made in America! But it’s overpriced!” etc. Oh, and then there’s always the classic and not-so-clever “They don’t know shit from Shinola! Huh-huh!” that they all think is so witty and hysterical. Deceptive marketing aside, we all have overpaid for things, even things made in China. It’s just how it is. At the end of the day, $200 watch can keep time every bit as good as one that costs $2K. Spend your money on what YOU like.

You're a company and talking bad about watches/brands that someone might own and love might make them think otherwise buying from you. I don't own a shinola but I live in Detroit and people are proud to wear them and support the city. I can see how it doesn't resonate with people outside of Michigan though. All I'll say is this. I have a quartz Shinola (47mm, big I know) that I got as a gift and despite the price (which I didn't pay and the person who bought it for me got a very good deal on it), I like the watch and get a lot of complements on it. I also have a Breitling Superocean (42mm) that I wear and love, and it matches different outfits for me. Most people expect the feeling I get when I wear the watches to be different because one is luxury and the other is most assuredly not, but that just isn't the case. They both feel solid, keep good time, and match the aesthetic I am trying to portray. I get that people don't like the deceptive marketing and all that, but it really doesn't bother me. For the automatic at $1,500 I will admit there are better watches for this price, while the quartz ones you can get at big discounts. One final note on packaging, the Shinola I got came in a great wood box that I think is great, so I wonder why the packaging for this is so terrible.

I have the Shinola Argonite 5050, I replaced the battery after 3 years. It is my daily wear, aside from my Omega and Casio. I will say they replaced my broken leather band after two years for free. What I do not like about this video is no real details about the watches quality. The 45mm and 47mm are extremely large, but I guess that’s for the US market. The Runwell Automatic in 39.8mm is quite nice. The leather straps are made in the US and the dials were also printed in the Detroit factory from what I have seen. The steel three link bracelet is not too light really. - Yes £1050 for this watch is a bit much and the wooden box could have been nicer (the hinges were not screwed in well and the screw heads not countersunk. But you get a handwritten certificate with your name on it and the person who assembled it, which is a nice touch. I think the story and the old factory buildings are charming though.

Henry Ford's didn't kill the skilled worker. Fords' assembly line simply brought the work to the worker instead of the other way around. This enabled the worker to have his tools and materials in one place and left him to the task at hand enabling him to complete his work much quicker, without other workers in his way trying to work on the same product at the same time, hence increasing production.. Automation is what has killed the skilled worker on all assembly lines and turned them into push button workers, not Henry Ford. .

Thanks for this episode, but, I've never been interested in Shinola. Sorry. Sure, there are many other value props for the money you're talking about both modern and vintage. BUT, if we're strictly talking about "Made in America" watches, I highly recommend you check out Pelton. They are in Detroit, as well, if I'm not mistaken. But, they really are made entirely in the United States. Even the metal for the case and bracelet. Ok, maybe the Swiss ETA movement they use is from Switzerland and possibly the crystal, but I think that's it. They balance and regulate them in the United States at Pelton to or better than COSC standards. Even their most expensive Perseus model is $2500 and a lot nicer with the amount of hand-built attention given to them, imho. You get even greater value with their Sector... I think a little over $1k. I think you may be impressed by the craftsmanship and can better respect and appreciate the value prop for an "American Made" watch from Pelton. I will admit they may be perceived as homages. But, I think in good ways. They do enough differently and very nicely that you may easily look past the initial quick feeling of a JLC or AP and just like the watches for what they are. And, maybe a lot more expensive, but RGM Watches does some nice custom hand-built watches, too, and I believe is entirely made in America. Look around, I believe there are actually a decent number of American made watches which I would place under microbrands or just independent that do the title and self-branding of "Made in America", or something like that , proud. Off the top of my head, I think Vortic Watch Co. and possibly Vero come to mind you may want to look closer at. With Vortic, they seem to do a lot of watch conversions.. which I know can be a dicey affair with a lot of other places that claim to do this. But, just check them out and see the quality of their work before you write off what I believe are mainly pocket watch conversions.

Yes I know they aren’t “made” in Detroit, but the guy showing me around was a factory assemblyman before and is now making watch straps and he couldn’t be more thrilled. You definitely get a better feeling there than you do cruising down 47th Street in Manhattan. It justified the price delta in buying a Runwell for me. I actually like the diver but can’t justify the price. If they were priced comparably to a Halios I’d probably choose the Shinola Diver. The tiebreaker being that it’s assembled in America.

Hate to say it, but Id rather buy a Ginault Ocean Rover than that Shinola. Still get the "Assembled in USA" tag (on the dial no less) and the quality is much better. Not really that interested in either, but if you just want a US watch its definitely better. Weiss Watches are excellent as well, but pricier and they only make field type pieces.

They charge more because supposedly they pay their employees well but all you need to know about their quality is that they're charging upwards of $1000 for a quartz watch. I like the way they look but ill buy a movado if i want an over priced quartz watch that i like the look of.

I received a shinola as a gift very recently because the person know of my fascination with horology. I have worn it a couple of times but overall, I think this company is trying to build market share with a patriotic sentiment; not actual watchmaking prowess. The mindshare they hope to gain is by aligning the brand with industrial revolution era-esque Detroit. The company clearly has a long way to go, but as a start, they should find American suppliers for quartz movements and really step up their fit and finish to at least Victorinox levels; OR figure out how to procure US made automatic movements and open the caseback. The company philosophy and they product output seem to be out of sync at this point. While the marketing has been effective thus far, I don't believe it is a sustainable strategy.

Nice video. But i am not sure about Shinola as a brand. Never seen any of their watches live. But the turntable is definitely overpriced. You can get a Project, Rega, Clearaudio or someone that made turntables for decades that sounds better for about half the price. And in this matter i do actually know better then most what i am talking about. I have built better turntables myself. And the bikes are also overpriced. It seems to be a fashion brand for hipsters that are more into the design then they are into how good value you get for the money.

I guess I dont understand watches that much, or what would make this worth more than a few hundred bucks tops. I have a seiko kinetic that a buddy gave me before he passed away. I dont wear it that often, maybe if I'm going out. I dont think it was all that expensive but I mean at least the band is metal and I can see the movement. Like I said I dont really get watches being worth that much unless they are made of precious metals, and factory set with diamonds.

Shinola produces a lot of different products. Some very nice and some......well? They definitely need someone to consult with about their watch line (Christian; this is where you come in). Yes, people are being harsh about Shinola's watches and yes, some people need to be harsh to try to get them to listen. Yet they still don't get it! These Shinola watches have been around now for years and years. And for years and years they have been taking a lot of flack from the watch community, and with good reason. Shinola can't stake a claim on being a USA/Detroit made watch and think that is all they have to do.

If you buy them, you ARE supporting Detroit. You ARE supporting a US company. I hope they do well, and I'm glad they seem to be, and people enjoy them. I don't have a Shinola, but I do have a Weiss watch and it feels pretty good to know my money went to an American company for a change. Rolex and Omega certainly don't need my money (even though I have given a lot of it to them in the past LOL). Is it possible for Shinola to price their watches at a level you'd like? I'm legitimately asking. Maybe the issue is they need high margins because of their marketing expenditures and brick and mortar stores, I don't know. Cost of labor as well.

ams914 Detroit died because manufacturers there sold high priced garbage to a gullible market. The competition from Japan, Germany now Korea put an end to all that. Companies have to learn to deliver value whatever price they sell at. That’s what reputation is all about.
@ams914
@ams914 5 жыл бұрын
@@MrRea112 I agree with that, it's actually very impressive that Germany can do it when they pay there workers more on average. But right now, some people like myself will choose to be "gullible" and support domestic businesses. It would be nice if there were no trade-offs, but right now there are.

ams914 Your position is indeed an admirable one - to support your country and all that is in it. If what you want is a cool looking watch that doesn't cost a ton and you don't care about movements or heritage, Fossil is a great choice. The pricing is much closer to their true value than Shinola is. They won't last for years and years, but they aren't meant to. For an even better value, look at Timex. They cost less, have some awesome designs, and are a long-standing American brand with real heritage.
