Cheers. There is certainly a place for long and detailed reviews. My thoughts were that this could become the channel people go to to get a first glance, and see if they want to dig deeper to a longer review or playthrough, or if the basic idea of the game was not for them so they can skip spending all that time.

Cheers J.W. One of my unofficial mottos/vision/core ides for the channel is "The game is the star". I'm way more interested in showing the game than trying to be a "you tube star". I leave the "me me me" stuff to the longer format vids I do on occasion. My "ten games I have played way too often" is about as personal a video as I think anyone has done in board game media. But i leave those for special occasions.

So Scythe, A near perfect hybrid of American games and Eurotrash, or a Frankenstein monster assembled from their parts? Lol sorry I couldn't resist. And didn't realize until I copypasta'd that it was the OP's comment hehe. Great review, super complex lengthy explanations everywhere and you nailed it in 3m? Beautiful. And I'll echo others and say thanks for the recommendations. To answer your clearly non biased question :p I would say yeah, definitely leans more heavily on the euro stuff, which is great for Yankee peeps like me who could never really get into games like Warhammer. Plus the whole clever upgrade system is just sooo cool. It's like a video game but, like, on my table :D

Good series of reviews. I see Scythe far more as a Euro with a little bit of safe combat than as a wargame. Eclipse is far more the hybrid, or even TI4. I think the engine building is quite fun & the art is of course superb but not the best thing ever.

I loved the way you explain the game in gist. I am new to this industry and was research. Was reading the comments below and it seems like gamers have some complaints with this game. I am curious to know what you think about this genre of board/card games: Catan, Scythe, Civilisation...What are the major problems you or you heard people experiencing with these?

@3MBG

@@drchandril Ah, for Catan its that with experienced players, without bizarre trades happening, you can have a pretty good idea who will win based on the setup. For Civilization, its the playing time the game can go for hours and hours. And for Scythe, its that people thought it looked like more of a wargame than it is.

Well I haven’t played any board games like this, we’ve been playing some TCG games recently. What would you suggest for 2+ newbs then? thanks for the reply, great video
@3MBG
@3MBG 4 жыл бұрын
Cheers. I think both games are quite busy and have a lot of mechanics in them. I'm hesitant to recommend them as start points, just because they might be a bit overwhelming. Of the two, scythe is the more accessible. Gloomhaven has a lot of rules. But TCG's can be pretty complex with a lot of card interactions and weirdness, so you might be ok. I did some vids on games for people new to the hobby a while back if you want to check them out. But if you do want to dive right in. Scythe is probably the easier choice

It has an automata deck, which can be used to have an AI opponent play against you. There are 3 decks in the game, so you could play against 3 opponents that way. Played a couple of games and it's just not working for our game group. The lack of interaction is killing the experience for us. Combat hardly occurs, only really because we were bored doing the other stuff. And there's no strategy as far as we can tell, you have to do everything on your board, and the order in which you do it is pretty much irrelevant. We also never had the feeling that we were in competition and racing to the finish ahead of the others. We just did our stuff by ourselves, and then suddenly it's over and no one had a clue who was ahead. Just count the points, and oh I guess you must've won. Very disappointing since the game looked so promising and the art is amazing.
