#1960s #christmas #oldies
Love it or Hate it. Christmas music is huge part of our nostalgia and the holidays between Thanksgiving and New Years. And nothing says Christmas music like Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Brenda Lee and Johnny Mathis. The classics if you will, next up I share some of my favorite Christmas songs and we hear directly from one of the greatest voices in popular music history Johnny Mathis about his magical Christmas recordings
Hey Music Junkies, Professor of Rock , always here to celebrate the greatest artists and songs of all time; Click the subscribe button below, to be in the know about our daily content .also check us out on patreon where we release exclusives every week.
Christmas music is a constant in a world of change. Every year we hear it whether we like it or not. Look I get it. I get tired of certain songs that will remain nameless. I actually have so many great memories from that song, So i’ve nothing bad to say about it. I have to admit that there’s a special place in hell for this song. And then there’s this one that if someone even mentions the song title, it’s stuck in my head for weeks. I’ve also gained a special loathing for this song that i’ve sung with my wife for a party many years ago and we’ve been asked many times to perform since and we hate.
I do have a place in my heart for certain Christmas music though. Nat King Cole’s the Christmas song is such a magical and nostalgic piece of music and it always resonates with my soul. I’m also partial to Bing Crosby’s White Christmas, and I love the Carpenters Christmas album. Karen Carpenter has a voice of pure gold. I’m very much a traditionalist when it comes to Christmas Music, Which is why very excited to share a part of an interview I did with one of my favorite voices ever. especially at Christmas time, Mr. Johnny Mathis. I’ve had the honor of interviewing Mr. Mathis several times.
He is simply one of the kindest, most elegant, humble individuals I’ve ever talked with. He’s like royalty. He’s one of the biggest selling artists of all time. He’s one of the last of the greats of the fifties that is still living, His platinum voice is just stunning. The sound of innocence and grandeur. He is one of those classic voices of Christmas past, Like Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby, His voice is a reminder of those magical moments we had as children, counting the days until Christmas morning. the excitement of Christmas lights, decorating the tree, making out our lists for Santa, watching the rankin/bass specials like Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer and Charlie Brown Christmas. We all have those special Christmas memories,

Kindness proceeds the genius. Mr. Mathis is an example of true humility and a kind gentlemen - so missing in the current entertainment climate. I was fortunate to travel with him on a flight from Las Vegas to L.A. He was kind, reserve and gracious. A true product of his family and healthy childhood environment. We are blessed to have him in our presence with his timeless and incomparable voice.

Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Engelbert Humperdinck, Frank Sinatra, Ray Conniff, Percy Faith, Mel Torme. These were LPs that scattered my parents and grandparents record collections. It was always music that was in the other room or played in the car - background music that subconsciously laid a foundation in my music vocabulary. Great artists. As I grew older I realized they were essential. I find myself turning back to them and discovering them with a renewed appreciation. Keep it alive! Johnny Mathis is a beautiful voice and a great man.

I saw him in concert last night (the first time was in Vegas about 15 years ago). He is almost 87 years old. My mother grew up with his music and as a child, I watched his Christmas specials and though I loved his voice, I was into "cool" music of the 60s and 70s. Now I appreciate his greatness. His voice is magical, even at 87, and his sweet energy and light, understated personality draw the audience close to him. He was comical when he forgot some lyrics and the whole theater laughed along with him. At 67 I was probably the youngest person in the audience. I'll tell you what, though -- I woke up at 6 this morning with "Wonderful, Wonderful" looping in my head. He is absolutely the greatest performer I've ever seen (and I've seen Tony Bennet in his old age as well) His voice exemplifies the word "dreamy"." It's a feel good, elevated vibration . He and Marvin Gaye -- the greatest one-man shows on earth. I feel blessed to have been in that space.

What a fantastic interview. Johnny Mathis transcends all genres. His music is timeless, and yet, he sits there and is so humble. Much of my early childhood was set to music like this, on the radio. This takes me back to a time when Christmas was a joy, not so much any more. During that time there were certain vocalists that did not sound anyone else. Nat Cole, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Perry Como, Bing Crosby, and so many others, who's names I fail to recall right now. It was such a pleasure to see this video of a man who I only knew about through the radio or TV. Thanks so much. Merry Christmas. ;-)

The most magical night I ever had was a December concert at the Star Theater in Merriville Indiana. Johnny Mathis opened the show in white slacks and a beautiful Christmas sweater and sang his Christmas songs and after intermission he was in a tuxedo and sang his wonderful classics!!! It was something I will never forget! I grew up on 60’s and 70’s music but was also the youngest of six kids so I listened to my older siblings music from the 50’s and 60’s. I still have a hits cd in my car and Johnny Mathis is the Christmas music I listen to.

Something about Johnny Mathis (not just his voice) just makes you feel love and goodness, almost as though you're in the presence of a great, kind, holy man.

Johnny mathis was my mother's favorite of all time. I remember hearing Johnnys music in the house and sometimes my parents would dance to it. I got to see one of his concerts and I had tears in my eyes. She was so happy and I was so happy to finally see him in concert. It was a wonderful show and a great memory with my Mom.❤

Johnny Mathis is one of those singers that will forever remind me of my youth and the holidays. My mother (RIP) loved his music. She would play it on the holidays, especially when she was cooking all the treats, she would than give as gifts to so many people (all looked forward to her treats every year). It would not be Christmas without his music.

To me...THE voice of the holiday season. And there is no question he is a voice of a generation. "Chances Are" is a legit classic and stands with any and all songs from The Great American Songbook. Great interview, professor.

There are some songs that only sound right when Johnny sings them. He is one of the great crooners, along with singers like Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams and Nat King Cole.

Thank you for this lovely interview with Mr Mathis. His humanity and humility shine with the same brightness as his talent and there is great wisdom in his words. Kudos, too, for advancing PoR production values - the 3 camera shoot, music bumpers, inserted stills, nicely paced editing - we notice when we look, but it doesn't get in the way of the story telling at all. Thanks for this great Christmas gift!

This is such a wonderful interview. I am on a campaign to have Johnny Mathis honored by the Kennedy Center. He is more influential in the musical art than LL Cool J or Queen Latifah. If he is the third best-selling male singer in history, why hasn't he been honored? He is not going to be around forever!! If you can expedite his nomination, that would be great!

I worked in a small grocery store in 1973, when I was 13 years old. I had a pocket transistor radio that I played while working. A song was playing and an older gentleman said "I'll give you $200 if you can tell me who is singing that song". I quickly replied "Johnny Mathis". He coughed and said "uh, well...Johnny can really sing". He never gave me the $200. The look on his face was priceless. Little did he know in my house we only had four albums while growing up, 1. The Platters, 2. Ray Charles, 3. The Ink Spots and 4, Johnny Mathis. Thanks for a great interview!
