3rd Gen Dodge Red Head Steering Gear Box Unbox & Review

If this is your first time to the channel WELCOME! This gearbox is part of the work we were doing for a 03 Ram 2500 Build we did last year. Everything on the truck was pretty hashed an we figured that we might as well fix the steering gear box cause they are loose on basically every truck that we have ever messed with. After TONS of research, we decided to give Red Head Gear boxes a try because they seem to actually rebuild them and not just freshen them up. We have used them on another truck and are getting ready to get another because they provide good improvements in steering feel. With that said, we recognize that the upgraded borgeson unit is also a good ( maybe even better but 2x the price) option. Hope y'all find this some what helpful on what to expect and how to install

We just got some other things sorted out, but I have to say that it is wonderful to have tight steering again!

I got a red head steering gear about 4 years ago and I have no complaints it’s been in for about 30,000 miles and it’s still good. I have 285 75 17 wheels. I didn’t get the thread integrity bolts though. Cost me about 425 for it with about 50 dollars to ship the core back

@break-it-brothers: Did you do a pump at the time of replacement as well, or just a flush?

Hey there! We have done it both ways. The biggest thing to make sure you pay attention to is that you take your time and bleed the system really well. I mean really well. We went through this whole process on the Project Snowball, and we nuked a brand new pump. We just missed an air pocket.... It was a sad day!

@@70440charger thanks for the reply. I ordered my red head gear last Thursday. On Friday my son and I did a wheels off the ground, engine off fluid flush. I replaced all the fluid with standard ATF. The noisy pump ain’t noisy anymore. So I hope when we install the new gear, it all feels great. I also added the EMF steering column bushings which on their own took away a lot of the steering free play! I’m really looking forward to seeing how it ends up

I have a 2003 dodge ram 2500 5.7 my steering wheel moves but the tires stay still . Will that read head work on a gas truck too ? (They told me i need it to replace the steering gear box ) the truck is lift it with 315/70/17 )

Hey there! The 2500 and 3500's, both gas and diesel, should use the same steering gear box. You should be able to confirm that by going to Red heads web side and putting the 03 ram 2500 info in. But if I remember correctly, there is no gas vs diesel option. Best of luck!

Do not buy the Redhead steering box. I have gone through 2 of them now and the one I have currently on they won't warranty as I have had it on for 14 months. I have factory size wheels, never off road and Maybe 10000 kms on it at the most. They do not stand behind their so called superior product. Don't waste your money.
