There is a 2nd level Magus Feat called Expansive Spell Strike that will allow you to use spells that have a saving throw with Spellstrike.

@37:00 ish about the spellbook/scroll thing, no. This question was asked in an issue of Dragon Magazine in the "Sage Advice' column. I think fairly early and may have been answered by Gygax. Essentially, a spell in a spellbook is an esoteric understanding of magic expressed in a personal notation unique to each spellbook scribe. Transcribing a spell requires the mage/wizard to spend hours to days interpreting the spell into their personal notations. The idea was based on a witch's Book of Shadows, which is more a journal and note repository in my experience. Scrolls follow a set pattern and have the magic infused into the medium used to create the scroll. (Some settings, like Dark Sun, used things other than parchment to encode scrolls and spellbooks.) However, an option was suggested in the article whereby the magic-user /could/ cast a spell directly out of his spellbook, for instance if the character was in dire straits and REALLY needed a fly spell, but hadn't studied the spell for that day. If this was done, however, it would wipe the spell from the spellbook. Also, only the person who wrote the spell into the book could use it this way. Not only do I think this was an inspiration for ritual spells, but probably the origin of Skid's rip and run idea.

THANK YOU PROFESSOR ERIC!! My commenting about shocking grasp finally reached the fod chat. Here’s hoping we see a shocking grasp out of Asta in the near future! I’d also maybe offer up that Troy should let Sydney replace whatever magus feat she has with expansive spellstrike so that we don’t even have to have the conversation about attack roll spells

@ about 44 minutes you're talking about the Devise a Strategem, I think you guys are right - you'd still have to roll that flat check (which happens when targeting a creature) before using the DaS roll for that attack

When talking about the Devise a stratagem you said the language is "... roll a d-20. If you strike the creature later this round you must use this result for your strikes attack roll.." and for concealment you roll the flat check and if you pass you do your attack roll. So I THINK you would devise, maybe get a natty twon-zony, then roll a flat check, natty 1. Attack again, flat check natty 7, then use the nat 20. But if you got a tweener or a miss that means you might need to miss 2 flat checks to get to learn that it missed anyway.

For a Joe stream, I would 100% love to see an Alan Wake 1+2 stream. Finally played the sequel and it is phenomenal. My wife has stated that it may be her 'favourite piece of media ever'. EDIT: Oh and I THINK Joe has mentioned Control? But as a Delta Green handler, I think he'd greatly appreciate that game (SPOILERS: Control also ties into Alan Wake, not necessary to play one to enjoy the other)

As a St.Louisan, there's a small bit of "sibling contention" with KC (see MLS, and MLB teams). So if the options are "Help KC on a Thursday night" or "GCN comes back to STL." I'm gonna go ahead and opt for the latter. I do know a couple people making the trip and really just couldn't b/c of a Thursday night.

Casting directly from a spellbook (fully verified and corrected): it came from the **first edition of Unearthed Arcana** (p.80), so as optional extra rules, which was a book I loved for AD&D (we actually used it for AD&D 2e). EDITED: as mentioned by others here, dong so destroyed the page, and there was a small percentage risk of destroying the entire spellbook. The spellbook had to be from someone of the same class (such as Magic-user) and had to be a spell you know how to cast to start with. Moreover, you had to cast Read Magic to even be able read a spellbook belonging to another caster.

me and my buddies play dnd 3.5. We also don't use spell components..Mostly. Once you get to the higher level spells that have components with a lot of value, thats when we start to require it.

Maybe adding a save at the end of every turn to every fumble with a duration would provide some balance. It would be cool thematically. If you fumble, roll high on the number of rounds you will be affected, then roll poorly on the save for 4 consecutive rounds the dice gods meant for the fumble to be really bad.

Though I play 5e, I also limit to 1 round special debuffs for Critical Hits (homebrew effects for heavy two-handed weapons to make them more relevant).

Spell components, in both D&D and PF1, often break immersion anyhow. Why does my divine entity want 100 GP of stuff to save someone ? Definately better to replace those costs/components by more role-play stuff, like a short ceremony, prayer, promise to do a quest for the entity, etc.

Joe! I think I’ve recommended DOOM (2016) to you before. Can’t recommend that game enough if you want fast paced fun first person shooter. Also, after Friday’s stream you should go check out Sydney’s clips from her Lethal Company streams. They are extremely funny. 😆

On the topic of Magus "nerf" due to remaster spell changes. Firstly there are 2 universal changes that made magi objectively better: 1) Cantrips got an extra die of damage at first rank compared to adding spell mod, which means magi no longer do less damage with them compared to full casters and can even dump Int in favor of other attributes with almost no downsides if they stick to spellstriking with spell attacks. 2) Refocus changes means easier access to both Conflux spells for very efficient spellstrike recharging or Focus spells from archetyping for powerfull rechangeable spells to fuel those Spellstrikes. (Psychic archetype was meta and is even better now) Secondly there are still many spells besides Shocking Grasp that require spell attacks and do good damage. Check out Horizon Thunder Sphere or Briny Bolt for your 1st rank spellstriking needs.

Could you say that they get the Ancestry trait and then the special ability is how that trait shows through? For example, Joe gets the elf trait and the low-light vision is how it shows. Instead of every aspect/ability of the the trait.

Sure Strike (formerly True Strike) ignores any flat check for concealment and hidden. You dramatically rolled for concealment flat check up in Canada. made for good drama, but Sure Strike is already badass. You should've gotten cheers for even just saying "I cast True Strike".

The spellbook to spell scroll rule is and ancient DnD 2nd edition rule that was also in 3.0. It is a semi popular house rule in modern play, but there is no precedent for it in the RAW. Its a cool as hell house rule though.

I'd say flat check before stratagem roll. If you can't see them, you can't devise the strat. As for the using spells book pages as scrolls, I've never heard of that. Perhaps it was a twisting of being able to use scrolls as either scrolls, or as a source of a spell to add it to your spell book (but it uses up the scroll) which I believe has been part of the games history.

I'd love to see the look on Matthew's face on hearing "juicetacular fodzony". Hope you have a ample time to load Sydney's mod list for Lethal Company before you start streaming, it's a perfect train wreck xD - - - "Choose a creature you can see..." / What about rolling a flat check first, before anything else, to check if you can see the creature properly? If you fail the flat check -> can't see them well -> cant' devise a stratagem on them at all. [edit: read through the comments, I see @garystephen8718 and @GuitarGuyNick lean that way as well]

Fan crit/fumble idea: Gcp offers subscription levels. I’m not sure how many but let’s say it’s 4 levels. Whatever effect is chosen, it lasts for 1 turn per subscription level of the submitter. Ie: the submitter is a tier 3 subscriber and the fan crit causes the target to be silenced. Since the submitter is a tier 3 subscriber, their fumble lasts for 3 turns. This offers higher tier subscribers an extra little perk at no cost to you! Also, a saving throw after the target’s turn makes a lot of sense.

with the flat checks with divise a strategem, i think because of the concealement and the requirement to be able to see the target. thats 1 flat check. then to strike is another flat check. so the order of operations would be: "id like to divise a stragetem" gm "your skill says you need to see the target , so thats a flat check dc5 for the concealement" Pc rolls gets result chooses to strike. Strike applies to concealement so another flat check to strike a concelead creature. strike hits if passes dc5.

I am not a fan of saving throw spells vs attack rolls personally since an attack roll i know what to add to the die roll and we collectively figure out what we need to roll to hit whereas a save has a secret modifier and its not even my roll so i hear the dice and then get a a result and have no idea if that was a low roll or a high roll. If the save succeeds on a 4 then i need to target a different save but ill never know that as i cannot see the GMs dice.

Glad you guys are back! Have some thoughts on this FOD. Fan Crits/Fumbles - I think many of these have become so powerful they can be encounter breaking. I’d consider capping duration to 4 (maybe 2) rounds BUT allowing saves at the beginning of character round. This adds a ‘timer’ but includes an element of the unknown, so players have to adapt and be flexible. Also on duration - I remember an Aeons where Skid was feared for 12 (!) rounds. It is a show. Man Skid was furious. On flat check for stratagem - if the intent of the flat check is to adjust for poor visibility, then you might even ask for TWO checks (have to see to devise) and attack. However, I think just asking when the player is devising can also make sense (and does not overly penalize) since part of the strategy might be how to hit the creature under those lighting conditions. Very excited about Blade Runner. Watched the new C7 game - was great. Please run Warhammer Fantasy- the character creation alone is worth it! Thanks for all you guys do!

I don’t know where this goes to get it asked on the show so 1. I’m hoping this works, and 2. I’d love for the community to weigh in with their opinions, so lemme have em! Hey guys! Since y’all are the ones that got me pathfinder-curious in the first place, I look to you as experts and I’m hoping you can help me (a daunted and confused newbie who only has the beginner box at this point) out with a quick question regarding the 2e and 2e revised core rulebooks. So I appreciate the need to distance themselves from D&D based verbiage, but (in my opinion) the end result is often goofy and just less cool (which maybe shouldn’t matter but I also kinda feel like it does, at least to me). Because of this I’m honestly inclined towards just getting the original 2e core rulebook rather than the new revised book, but then I think that it might be foolish to not go with what’s new and updated (I’m sure there’s other balancey changes included on top of the superficial stuff). My question is this: is it silly to go out of my way to stick with the OG content at this point with the revised books out there? Are they ultimately compatible with one another/how does that work? I’d love to give pathfinder society a shot since I don’t have people to play with, so does it matter which book I show up with? Sorry for the long-winded Q, but I would absolutely appreciate your insight. Thanks a million! Jeremy from Ontario

Joe in Foundry VTT there is built in Crit Hit and Fumble decks for PF2e which have less encounter breaking effects. Maybe take a look at those?

Save at the end for fumbles is a lot better and more in line with PF2e than the standard 1dsomething rounds. Base 1 minute effect for failure (Chance to save each rounds). Effect for 1 round for success. Effect for 1 minute with no chance of getting our for critical failure. I Love that you are checking the fancrits / Other thing, Socking grasp wasnt "Renamed" it can be used still, they made another one to avoid copyrigth, but you can use Shocking Grasp in your games (Force Barrage is Magic Missile renamed)

Concerning Fan Crits/Fumbles. I think theres a major issue in people writing them with the altering components hidden in the flavor text, also the discrepancy between submissions intended for/against PCs I can feel it physically when Joe pulls a fumble and the actionable part isn't plainly clear and now he has to go digging into an Anchorman inspired joke where a sex panther is added to the initiative. My suggestion is that the submission form is changed to add a dropdown menu, where you pick one option and that modifies the effects you can add to the crit/fumble. [Drop Down] 'normal damage, major additional effect' 'regular crit damage, lesser additional effect' (default) 'crit multiplier +1, minor additional effect' 'crit multiplier +2, no additional effect.' Then hopefully when joe pulls a submission it'll show as "crit multiplier +1, one additional effect" much more actionable. The baseline assumption has to be that you're going to deal regular double damage with a rider effect or two, I.e. "you deal crit damage as normal, you hit their jawn so hard that they drop their weapon and are fleeing until the end of their next turn" regular crit, two rider effects. I think the frustration comes from the wildly disparate motivation to write the submission, i.e. extremely pro the Players, or trying to hobble Troys monsters as possible, which multiple times has ended up with the players pulling a "bad" crit or Troy pulling a "good fumble", I believe that setting parameters like this will help make the submissions more legible, and have a more expected performance at the table. "Okay troy pulled a gnarly 'Crit multiplier +2' crit at least it won't do anything outside of damage"

Splitting the party is bad in general. It may be more fun for you as a GM but you're taking players out of the game time who have been looking forward to playing all week and telling them too bad. I understand there may be rare circumstances for story purposes but again that should be rare. TTRPGs is a social event. Don't take the social out of it. I specifically as a player will go out of my way to include others at the table so nobody is left out unless they want to be. If you're talking about podcasts or a show yes it can be fun for a listener but again for a normal game most people will secretly or not do secretly hate your soul for doing that. Also I never adjust. Does one bank robber stay outside just because a guard called in sick? No, variety of challenges and the ability to see and avoid no win situations is part of the game and strategy and fun.

The cheer excitement in the simple statement in between shop talk of “Except when they trade in and grab a qb in the first rounds…” is the type of stuff that personally makes you guys such an amazing special group to follow weekly. Keep up the great work, and for the love of god, make sure you give Zephr a buffed item soon. Kate won’t like it, but they both *deserve* it.
