Birds are amoung the most majestic animals on this planet and they have dominated almost all landscapes and ecosystems. Some birds have adapted for life on land and other birds are at home in the water. Most people are aware of the largest birds in the world but there are some other large birds that also deserve some attention. In today's video instead of focusing on the largest birds in the world, i will instead be focusing on birds that are the largest of their kind. I will be going through 4 birds that are the largest members of their families.

I lived in Kenya for a while when I was a student and there was a flock of crowned cranes that would hang out in the back yard of the compound around the storm water drain. I would climb the old guava tree for a better view (and a snack) and watch them after classes.

A beetle video regarding this topic would be great, I know tons of candidates like the largest rove beetles, largest longhorn beetles, largest ground beetles, and largest desert darklin beetles to think of all of these most darklin and ground beetles can't fly while the Kenya giant longhorn beetle and hairy rove beetle both can despite their enormous size

It's amazing to compare the weight of a great bustard with a spoonbill or flamingo, both of which I find astonishingly lightweight! Lovely video - much more enjoyable than the "deadliest" series!

I was just wandering along the Mississippi River in my home of St.Paul, Minnesota and came within a few meters of three of our largest birds: a great blue heron, bald eagle, and a turkey buzzard that was perching in a dead tree. I've seen several trumpeter swans this spring, they are north America's largest bird by weight. It's a great time to be on the Mississippi Flyway!

I would like to see a part two to this video containing the largest of more commonly seen bird families which would be a good teaching tool for newcomers in nature and/or birding. Examples; largest gull species, largest waterfowl species, largest species of true finch, largest grouse, largest buteo hawk/buzzard. The last one is technically not a family of it's own. I picked families that are widespread and familiar to most people even though many may not know what the largest on those families are.

Toucans are actually kept as pets, sometimes. However, they are incredibly difficult to care for due to their diet. They often need to be fed lots of fruit, but they can suffer from health problems when not fed properly. Nevertheless, it is possible to keep Toucans as pets, but I do not recommend them for anybody who's not a hardcore bird expert.
