Bringing the outdoors in with a faux 4 board horse fence as a loft pony wall railing that matched our actual horse pasture fence outside. We built the pony walls in the loft bedrooms to help with some privacy and most importantly, safety. Now that we are living in the barndominium, we needed to make sure we were safe.

As a thought regarding the cap rail. What if you cut the rail over the removable section at 45 degrees so you form a V across the RM section. That way it hides the gap when not in use...I would have probably used cotter pins to hold the section in. It would make it easier to RM when needed. If the bridging trim is only screwed to the RM panel then it will make for easy RM of the panel when needed. Use the same method on the trim to hide the gaps. Cutting the trim where it goes horizontal at a 45 degree will cover and hide the gap..Unscrew the trim, pull the cotter pins, lift out the section...Easy...

Really looks very nice! We are from the River valley, We just bought property and are thinking of doing a metal building we are currently exploring a more traditional looking cabin style or way different and maybe go Quonset hut home.

I think if you had gone with hog wire panels cut to fit into gaps and sandwiched between 2x2 frames, you could have maintained the open concept look and achieved safety too. For an example check out the show Tree House Masters. They use this concept in their high-end tree houses. Very classy and easy to build. By using drywall, you are potentially blocking airflow. You can easily install a wire across the daughter's space and hang hooked curtains on the wire so your daughter can have her privacy in a pinch. I would not trust those posts to be fully strong in a pinch because you cut more than half of the structure out of the posts and the grain going the way it does could potentially check along the grain as it dries out. It would depend on what the humidity level is maintained at. I would have used 4x6 cedar posts combined with the pig wire and a double top cap with staggered levels. Also, remember that as long as the top rail is higher than your waist you will be fine. I do like the concept of rough lumber for the posts. Good call on that. I lined the walls of my garage and closets with 5 inch wide by 8 foot tall fence pickets. They were all mitered with a lap joint to counter joint opening as they dried out.

Be really careful doing cuts like that on the miter saw. I made that mistake and it sucked my hand into the saw. Got a really wicked scar where it tried to take my thumb off. I learned my lesson the hard way. Glad yours didn’t try to remove a digit.
