Dear Louise, thank you for your tips. I admire the way you think and express yourself! I wish you had more drawing practice videos on your channel. They have been extremely helpful for me.

Great video, wish more people would talk about the common things that inevitably go wrong and some simple ideas on how to avoid. I’m going to rue-watch that skillshare class.

Very cool. I'm watching at skillshare now and its great. Perfect for my 14 year old son who draws every day.. I'll have him put it tomorrow during his drawing time. Thank you. Also your production quality is great, and the piano and jazz sound space I give two thumbs up.

I'm definitely a member of the contour only gang lol. I've been seriously doing portraits since about 2016 and I think I've finally leveled up at least when referencing photos and drawing on my ipad. However I still struggle VERY badly adding any values to my work. Trying to practice painting again though so I don't just rely on inking and cell shading as a crutch but it's haard. Love your videos so much they are so relaxing and informative. Will definitely look into your class when I can afford a skillshare sub. I really wish we could sign up on a per month basis :/

I know, me too. 😅 Shading is one of the things I struggle the most with. And painting is a great way to practice that. There's an awesome video on Proko's channel, about "drawing like a painter" that I recently re-watched: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h69xi6lmksrYnaM.html Highly recommend that, it's helped me a lot. Thank you so much for those kind words! 🖤🙏

Going to have to disagree about realism though. As a photographer also, you can do abstract, impressionism and all the rest in photography...so using that logic would make all art invalid because there's cameras for that? I love the looser sketchier style but I also do realism (And photography which is very different) and i find a lot of satisfaction in both...

I don't think it's a matter of agreeing or disagreeing - art is subjective. As with food or music or anything, it's a matter of taste. And photorealistic art just isn't to _my_ taste. Not saying I think it's bad or pointless or "not real art". Or that photography is. I think you might have misunderstood me a bit. 😊 I'm certainly impressed by extreme realism artists. And it's a good aim, as an artist, to be _able_ to reach realism when we want to. But I also think it's often a stressful aim to have as a complete beginner, and this is a beginner's class. Most of the other portrait drawing classes out there seem to aim for photorealism, and I wanted to offer an alternative. 😅

@@LouiseStigell I think therin lies the problem. Realism is not for every aspiring artist and I think some people think they have to achieve it in order to be classed as one and when they cannot, then they often go about trying to invalidate it. Not saying you did that but I see it all the time in the art groups..even pet portrait groups where realism is most common because the general public usually choose that style when commissioning portraits of their pets..and you get people saying it is pointless (It's not) or that it isn't real art because you may as well take a photo (But that applies to all styles as I mentioned above) and a whole myriad of other plain insults of this style and anyone who does it..it gets a bit tiresome. High levels of realism take a lot of work to achieve...usually years....and most people won't have the drive to achieve it. Still, I think maybe if you put it like that as in don't feel like it needs to be of that level of realism as this is not for everyone and to focus on a path that feels right to you and not what you think is the status quo. I've thought about doing a video about this myself. I can say that my most popular videos are the tutorials on how to paint realistically. The ones where I do more loose charcoal drawings and such just don't get the same amount of views. I think a lot of people are trying to achieve realism just because and not because it really is for themand that is where the problem is...not the style itself...
