I've spent so much time thinking of ways to stack logs without the use of horses or machinery, that I'm glad to have found this video. I could tell what was gonna happen for every scenario, including what would work or not, but it was seriously refreshing seeing you try them all, unashamedly. Well done for showing the mistakes man. This'll help others a lot :) I hope you've perfected your technique/s since this video was made :)

Worked with my Grampa 60 years ago cutting and snaking logs from bulldozed trees. Skidded them to a clearing, and using chains to load on a wagon. Then pull the wagon to the sawmill a couple miles away. Never used a ramp, but then I was driving a tractor and Grampa had a team of mules. We had the power to roll 3 or 4 logs up with that chain at a time, depending on their size. Horsepower does make a difference. Learned a lot about common-sense that summer.

The best parts of the videos were your sharing your "mistakes". No better way to learn. Doing this kind of work can be dangerous and doing it alone can be extremely so. Thank you for taking the time to do this video.

My Grandfather used this method back in the 40's and 50's to load his log truck using a team of 4 oxen for power, hooking two cross haul chains anchored to the far side of the trailer. The oxen would pull the 30 inch by 20 foot logs up the skids and onto the trailer. As a young kid in the 50's, I though it was really amazing that you could load logs that big three layers high just using the power of the oxen! Things sure have changed. Great Video!!!!!!!!!

I agree, thanks for recording the ideas that were less successful. So many people want others to think that everything they do works all the time, when the rest of us know that's not the case. I learned a few new tricks from your video. Which I will use in the coming weeks. I donate hard wood to the Navajo reservation and am planning to load and haul the oak logs from MO to NM. This video will help!

The top of the square tube with the winch on it is open ended. A ratchet strap to the top of the tube and secured to the back side of the trailer could help take some of the tension off the tube. I realize it's thicker steel and the gusset at the bottom would stay off total failure. Maybe the strap could keep the top of the bar from bending, especially when lifting a larger log. Great video sir.

For the last log in the last loading method, would it work if you installed the front vertical bar to prevent the log from swinging out, then use the lifting tool on the rear portion of the log while the strap for the winch is still in place to stabilize? Really appreciate your video. Thank you

It's surprising what you can do on your own.good videos I'm really enjoying them

Great video Erik! I would go back to the chain system and switch it out for a rope Just shorten it so you don't run out of pull doing it this way keeps the log cantered and when you start out you only need the one line but when it comes up it will be more stable! Only problem with the one line is unless you are in the centre or you have a bent log or have a knot it will swing on you!

Isn't hindsight wonderful. :-) I could tell right away that #4 with chains wouldn't work whereas a strap/pully would. You used a bit of #2 with the 3rd log. Actually #2 looks like fun ... for small logs. Hope you had some fun too. Your video's are well made and a lot of fun to watch.

When it comes to a problem a person has to think outside the box, it's the trailer manufacture your trailer? two logs weigh more than one and four logs weigh more than one, use the weight of the multiple logs to elevate the lesser weight! if a person is not using hydraulics to move item A to item B then they have to think of other methods, a huge tree can be pulled clean out of the ground with pully and ropes.
