Welcome to our first DIY video. As much as this is a “how to” video, it’s more a “how we” did stuff. We will cover how we netted our garden for recall training, how we have built aviaries for Mikey and Mia, how to make parrot perches/bird stands for training with bird safe wood, and how we make bird toys, foraging toys what we think the best parrot toys are. Most of the content in this video will relate to not only macaws but other large parrots.
These 4 topics we cover are the most asked questions we receive on a daily basis so figured this may help some people.
A few things
We are not pros at any of this stuff and there are always other options, so far these have worked for us. If you are netting your garden with small birds, make sure the hole spacing is small enough. We feel the aviary we currently have is too small and can’t wait to have more space to build a huge flight aviary. The perches we made can be made out of many different types of stands, we just prefer the t bar lighting stands. For smaller birds, camera tripods and mic stands work well.

Aviaries - 4:05
Perches - 7:59

I love the cardboard idea for the big wheel. I have also found that my B&G as well as my Military like fish! We had a big aviary built like a "Pool Cage" of aluminum pipe and then put 1x2 wire and then screening over it. I live in the southern U.S. and this is great to keep the mosquitoes out.

yeh, I like that cardboard idea too! Especailly cause mine keeps on freezing up, due to a mix of being pooped on top of (with lorikeet poop, which is sugar based liquid & so acts like glue) & the sultanas & dates being sticky & being rubbed against the edges, so I'm thinking as well as the added challenge, the cardboard may also help control that :)

Thank you! Got some great ideas from this video. An extra step I like to do with parrot safe wood perches is bake them in the oven at 100-120 degrees C (if they fit) for an hour or so. That will definitely kill off any nasty bugs and germs and gives me extra peace of mind. Thank you for such amazing content!

Just a thing to add to building a perch, you have to heat it up. You have to heat it because there could possibly be bugs and insects that can kill you're bird

Have you tried talking to councils about the branches? I'm in Australia, so perch branches aren't a problem here as there's gum trees everywhere & big branches get dumped in bushy areas at the ends of streets all over the place, but I've also had times when I've seen council workers pruning trees & asked them if I can grab a branch for birds & had them cut them to size for me on the spot & everything. I would imagine if you called the council in the area where that white berch is, they'd likely be willing to help you out with telling you when it's next scheduled for maintenence so you could go & collect branches they need to remove, or more than that, they can likely tell you where others are, you could maybe even have them call you when they get a call from someone reporting a fallen branch they need to go out & cut up & remove. I would say to ask them if you can go to where they take all their tree waste to, but normally they mulch everything, so that likely won't be helpful. If you're willing to go to where they are, when they're there though (ie no inconvenience to them), they should be willing to help you out :)

I've made a pretty good DIY tree branch stand for my amazons. I bought 4 relatively broad wooden planks and used metal 90 degree angels to screw them together like a tall box. Then I placed this on a big squared wooden plate and used more metal angels to secure it. Now I can get very big tree branches from the forest and simply put them into the stand like flowers into a vase

12:48 My Goffin's cockatoo loves the foraging toy I purchased from the same people who make the metal busy barrel toy. The one I got him is called "the goodie gadget." Dumb name. Great toy. It looks like a giant bullet with a cap that you unscrew to put in the treats. It spins around, and it has a slit on each side of the bottom of the "bullet" where a bird has to get the treat out of. Sometimes he'll even play with that toy without treats in it. I'm looking forward to getting him the busy barrel toy next (the bullet toy is too easy for him now even though he loves it).

Just to let you know PVC pipe might make a cheaper stand as opposed to using the T bar stand. Also, may I add to keep predators out of aviaries there are two things you should do. Dig a rectangular hole the same width, and length as the aviary. The hole I think should be 2 ft(60 cm in metric) deep from what I remember if I am not mistaken. Place the wire mesh in the hole make sure to form it around the shape, and depth of the hole. Attach it to the bottom frame of the aviary with screws so predators can't try to push their way in. Fill the hole back up with dirt to cover the wire, another thing you could do to make it even more predator proof is putting down a layer of bricks down on the wire before filling it back up with dirt. This will take up space so you don't have to fill it back up so much with dirt. But, also predators won't try to push the wire in since the bricks would be obviously much harder to try to move than the dirt. The second thing you should do is add a kick plate around the aviary 2ft-3ft tall this is to prevent predators like snakes from trying to climb up the aviary using the wire.

@@MikeyTheMacaw i wish one day i could free flight train him. i know it is possible with cockatiels, but, i live in southern california, and our property, altho plenty big enough to fly on, is patrolled by hawks, and i would never want to risk kellin getting hurt.
