In this short video, I demonstrate 4 easy-to-implement respect exercises for you and your horse. I had just moved my horses to a new stable when this video was filmed, so adding these exercises to our training was a great way to get refocused. If you are also looking to get your horse's attention on you, this video is for you!
I do not go into depth on how I trained my horse to do each of these tasks. Your horse may need you to start slow and build up in steps, speed, and duration. Do not expect perfection from a horse that has not practiced these exercises.
I hope this video is helpful to you. Remember to always give yourself and your horse lots of grace.

if your horse stands stuck in place - lead him forward to get the feet unstuck, then pull the head around to make a tight circle, quickly tap the hindquarters away from you,, then smoothly pull backwards on the halter. Be happy with just one step back until he begins to understand, then add one or two more.

Great question! Stay really patient with your horse is the number one tip. You can also use a stick with a flag on it to get their attention more an unlock their feet. Check all phycial things too from chiropractic work to farrier. I've both of these things cause horses to be reluctant to back up.

Blaha. Just be Fair and conseqvent all The time.. Experienced people dont have to pretend or Bully them. They are naturally calm leaders and The horse sees that. Use Words. Thats The difference between us and animals. YOU step in The horse zone. Be polite. You are not a horse. They know that You arent. Only Horses can be leaders. You are its Human. GAIN their respect.

This is 100% true! It is also about mutual respect, respecting the horse and their stress signals:) Thank you for your comment!

love this but horses dont actually understand the concept of respect, its a human concept and something that we are capable of understanding because of our highly developed prefrontal cortex, which horses do not have, it is a misunderstanding to say horses respect or disrespect humans. to give a horse oir human traits is to anthropomorphize them and fundamentally misunderdtand equine behavior and motivation theory.

These are great points. I think respect it a two way street. We do talk a lot about getting horses to respect us but we don't talk about respecting the horse which is equally as important. Now domination is a totally different. Horses and people do NOT need to be dominated. But I do believe they understand mutual respect.

I know this is an old comment, but watching horses in a group shows that they do have their own version of respect. When a horse who is higher in the pecking order wants a lower horse's hay bag, for example, they often only need to look at and move towards the lower horse to get them to move quietly out of the way. There's (usually) no fight or question, top horse wants, lower horse gives. It's when there is a question of who is higher that the lower horse "tests"... I'm not into forceful dominance training, I just want to be the higher horse, which sometimes requires the use of increasing pressure to show the horse they need to respect my space. (A tug, a tap, etc. ) Great video!
