When grinding a point on the end of your tungsten, you sometimes leave a small "tail" that will release into the molten weld puddle at first arc initiation. To prevent this contaminant from happening, merely lightly touch the end of the tungsten to create a small flat (or in this case we ground it) and you will get consistent arc starts. Thanks for watching TIG Time.

It's clear he has more of a 'hate' toward the chemical sharpner... it was like watching an info-mercial bashing the product.... I've used that powder since the early '70's and you sure DON'T need to push the cup into the powder AT ALL! Pull the tungsten out about a 3/4" or 1" - heat - then dip JUST the 'tip' of the tungsten into the powder a 1/4" to a MAX of 1/2" - Wipe it off; adjust sitck-out and go!!! You know if you don't adjust the stick out at all and try to take the tungsten to a grinder while it's still in the gun you probably going to have the same problem. The one option that didn't spread heavy metal powder all over the place he had the nerve to call "a bit messy"

How come no discussion of tip included-angle? At 6:36, Degrees seem to be calibrated on the rotary guide head of your "Turbo-Sharp X" industrial tip grinder. Can you please elaborate on this and explain the effect of different angles on electron flow, and wear on the tip? (oops, I see you DO have another video on angles. Thanks.)

Why not remove the Tungsen needle and hold it with pliers when doing a chem sharp treatment? No need to clean the head but you do need an external heat source like a propane or Mapp gas to heat the Tungsen.

I've been working on trying to keep the tip close to lower heat and trying to not contaminate the tip. I've tried to limit the stickout of the tip to 1/4" proud of the cup. Even with all that, I seem to need to resharpen ever few welds. Using 3/32" 2% thoriated, on mild 1/8"steel, DC neg, precision tig 225. Any other ideas? Is it normal to need to resharpen so often?

Honestly the jar of powder despite you saying it's messy seems like the cleanest option cuz you don't spread heavy metal all over the place all you need to do is not dunk your whole gun into it just like you wouldn't take your whole gun to a grinder, you know sometimes these jars come with that same tungsten holder that you displayed earlier in the video, it's entirely your choice to get powder all over the cup that's not inherent of the product like getting carcinogenic heavy metal powder all over the place is an inherent unavoidable aspect of seemingly every other product you showed.

Why not grind on the side of the wheel. I have some expensive wheels on my slow speed grinder I use for sharpening my wood lathe tools. I don't want to contaminate my tungsten. Nor do I want a groove on the face of my wheel. So I've been grinding on the side of the wheel to avoid both problems. What am I introducing by grinding on the side as long as I grind in a spot where the wheel and tungsten are parallel to each other?
@areyouavinalaughisheavinal5328
@areyouavinalaughisheavinal5328 6 жыл бұрын
grinding with the side of the wheel is a big mistake, you're weakening the integrity of your wheel. you've got that spinning mass going at 30k rpm and it already wants to expand due to centrifugal force... you weaken the side and you're heading for a face full of grinding wheel fragments. wearing a groove in the side of the wheel is like weakening spokes of a bike wheel... ya wouldn't wanna ride that bike on the highway.... aside from that, grindwheels aren't designed to take side load.
@loftsatsympaticodotc
@loftsatsympaticodotc 2 жыл бұрын
@@areyouavinalaughisheavinal5328 DISAGREE! Firstly Owen Johnson said "slow speed grinder" so where on earth do you find 30,000 rpm??. A regular bench grinder runs a standard hi-speed NEMA design motor @ 3450 rpm. Secondly, the side load is negligible for a single row radial ball bearing. As far as wearing a groove and 'weakening the abrasive matrix"... sure... if you appreciably thin the wheel... though experience tells me that the particle matrix has no particular orientation to 'weaken' the structure, whether up, down or sideways. I have almost never seen a grinding wheel weakended from side load, in 40 years of machine shop visits as part of my job. Conclusion, a tiny Ti sharpening from time to time in a welding job shop, will also... be negligible from a safety standpoint.

I think many people will agree with me but those sharpeners are fucking useless. I've always used a bench grinder buy I only do it for a hobby. But that all depends on what's in the tungsten. But I always set up a hoover as close as possible to collect as much of the dust as possible, even if it isn't radioactive. I do use a ginger counter so I can check, as my cats go in there and I don't want them getting radiation sickness and possibly dying. I think £20 for a dremel with an attachment screwed on the front, with a zirconium wheel, well. If your that stupid and you wanna waste your money, when you can but loads of other tools and bits which will come in much more useful. Like magnetic guage blocks
