On dota 1 the midlane hero was always ganking, starting even with the 2' minute rune. Usually ppl picked pudge, sf, mirana, zeus, lina or whatever, get a bottle and ganking over and over again on sidelanes. It could be min 20 and have 35 cs or something like that. At least on the platforms i played😂

I'm really interested to hear where the idea of mids not ganking comes from. I started playing DotA 2 in 2013 and other would tell me the mid is almost always the role that needed to do the ganking. I would play mid Puck and TA and gank all the time. Now i stopped playing Dota for a number of years and only got back into it a bit recently, but the mid being a ganker is an idea that I still have. So at least that one bad habit i dont have lol.

I find the best way to play and win MMR is to pretend that Carry doesn't exist: If they are good- a mega creep in late-game to use as bait. If they aren't - well it's a 4v5 game anyway.

I've been playing since 2011 and I can't think of a time when mid was ever seen as a passive farm lane. Obviously there are some exceptions with greedy mids who want farm, but usually the popular mid heroes are ones that can abuse runes and gank the side lanes when they hit a power spike like QoP or storm.

One problem I have when I try to shove out the offlane/dangerous farm lane, is often even if i tell my team what i'm doing they will get into a bad 4v5 fight without me and feed, then ping spam me for missing the fight and flame me lol. I've often had to let T1's die to just creeps in order to not get reported for missing the team fight they choose to take without me. It's rough in solo queue.

The warding is what I don't understand with cores, observer ward is already free and because of support items 4 and 5 can no longer carry ward because their inventory is full and yet cores still don't want to exert effort to plant observer ward which can definently save a life. #supportlife

Years ago, I used to buy wards and send them to my team via the courier, and they'd still be too lazy to ward. Like, what do you want me to do, walk all over the map just to place a ward, and then walk back again while my hard carry is dying in a 1v2?

True, a carry could purchase get a ward, but it's not ideal because he could be putting the ward in a spot that the enemy has their sentry at, thus making it an easy de-warding for the enemy. A carry would have to buy a sentry (which costs gold) in addition to a ward to guarantee that the place they are placing the ward isn't already sentried.

there are many bat habbits old players have. for example there was an old-ass dota 1 rule that if you build an item, you should but expensive components first, or components that give health. but these days you need to think every time which components is more efficient to buy frist, for example sometimes its better to buy mkb with blitz knuckles and not demon edge etc

2:00, when my carry friends play support, they tend to gobble up all the neutral, all the kill, and saving themselves first instead of sacrificing yourself to save carry. And they dont even try.

My favorite is when an export invoke does not even bother to drop a sunstrike to help the lane, even when the gank is called in time, and ppl even ping the target

About failing the lane happens to me all of the time. Sometimes 3 deaths and ur opponents already snowballed. And it took me long to notice that I should juat give up the lane and just not die.

the fun part in lower brackets is that. carries dont farm at all. they run around aimlessly. 30mins with 10min items.

the only exception to the rule are the low tier mid heroes, the dumb right click mid heroes and tinker. Those are heroes that are either too slow to go gank enemy lanes, need a lot of items to scale or they are made to dominate mid, take it fast and then proceed to join another lane and start team fighting. And Tinker of course is the opposite. The whole point is to delay his BoTs before he becomes a global gank presence. So in this case mid needs to get ganked hard.

if there is no space for carry to farm, I think the real issue is, are we all competing for farm which translate to "are we all picking semi core or hard carry?". If yes, then someone else need to give up their farm. If you have AM and Tinker in one team and NP, for sure there will be no space to farm unless you are controlling whole map. However, during the game, no one wants to give up their farm and as a result everyone has sub par item while enemy core already at peak

I hate the thing when carry is about to respawn and your support run and take all 3 waves pushing into you to farm 😭

Actually in Dota 1 mid was always the ganker. In Dota 2 it switched around, people ganked into mid and mid more farmed. It seems now we transition back to the way it was.

I reached 10 MMR after a consistent losing streak, then I started playing carry and reached 140 MMR. Later, I met offlaners who would take beating from carry and then take all the safe farm, use spells to take creep waves, which brought me back to 10 MMR. So I switched to offlane and didn't steal the safe farm from my carry, also this allowed me to shut down their carry. With this strategy I reached around ~400 MMR. Now the next problem I face is that my teammates take bad fights. If the opposite team is snowballing them, they get frustrated and fight more and blame each other. I hope I can improve my gameplay and find a solution to this so that I can exit herald bracket.

TFW I’ve been playing this game for so long that I thought "mids don’t gank" is the advice when he started talking about old habits. When I joined in 2013, everyone insisted that mids should gank with their runes and I’ve never changed that mentality. Glad to see it’s apparently in-meta again xd

I don't know what you've been smoking as of late, Jenks, but midlane in dota 1 was always a role that occupied mid because with the fastest level 6 on the map you could tilt the balance on the sidelanes to your favor and thus most prominent midlaners were all that instead of mid PL/Faceless Void/Ursa. And moreso, even in dota 2 when ranked got added - fastest way to get get solo mmr was to spam QoP/Storm/Tinker mid because of the nature of the heroes and inability of pubs to retaliate due to lack of knowledge back in the day

The only thing better than leaving mid to gank is somehow getting ganked, one time an idiot spirit breaker was trying to help his arc warden gank me as silencer, by the 5 minute mark I had 4 more int, the spirit breaker was missing 4 of his int, I was higher level than the arc and we demolished the game because we won both the other lanes

I'm at 1k MMR what I always see is people not buying regen at the start of the game, always rushing boots, wand or wraith band. My last four games I've won the laning phase by showing up and casting one spell.

Recently I and Viper fed on our offlane and kept coming. 6 deaths till 10-minute mark. Still won, coz they had trilane (Shadow Shaman, Lion, Sven) and we out lvled them.

As an offlane player I cant agree more with your first advice. I see soooo many players playing the offlane bascially as a second carry and not as a space maker and this just ruins games.

People taking a camp every now and there is okay, in my herald/gaurdian games, people last actually pick a carry as hard support, jugg / faceless void and make sure thati won't have a single cs until 3:00 min mark and throw the game in ranked role queue. This happened 2 straight games yesterday.

Yeah one of my friends who is not a carry player tells me to get more farm and more levels when I play offlane core but invariably I am near the carry and they could easily want the camp and it is also nowhere near minute tick. I played a carry once to know how annoying it is to enter the jungle to realise there are no goddamn creeps to smack

oh man i miss the old days of dota 1 where there were no roles, we all auto-attacked creeps or dive for kills, no pulls, no stacks, no wards, no last hits or denies, just 5 agility heroes having fun :)). N'aix had 1 active spell ... you could almost play it with just the mouse. Ursa could Rosh at lvl 1, Mortred was literally invisible and whoever could play Meepo was a god :)

Here is advice from an old Dota player, offlaners or Pos 3 players should buy team items (with auras like pipe, crimson, vlads, guardian, shivas, ac and so on), as well as supports Pos 4 and 5, they should have meka, force stuff, glimmer, archane boots, veil of discord and so on. Main goal is to focus most toxic heroes from other team (never focus tank first) and to save carry and mid from dying in other words, die for them.

One thing was wrong. I come from dota 1 and the midlane hero ALWAYS had to be good at ganging and do so as soon as he hits lvl6 usually. Just farming mid might have been a 2007 dota strategy having a silencer and viper farm mid but those days were long gone by the time dota 2 hit

Honestly Jenkins, I wish turbo players listened to any one of these strats, I used to not have time for normal games so I put my suffering in turbo mode. In turbo if mid ganks at lvl 6 and gets a double for his safe, safe goes up 1 lvl per hero, you get about 400 gold and mid goes up a level as well. You even use that ult you cant find a use for in mid and put in on cool down, I.e. use it for what it was intended

Stealing camps gives a huge impact to team like feeding on purpose, can easily ruin the game. They should go low priority for doing that. Once I’ve seen a pos4 alchemist stealing all the camps even killing stacks and he didn’t realize how badly it affects to team.

See, to the last point, most DOTA players I play with just DON'T think. It's not that they're stupid people at all, it's just that they have set in stone ways of thinking and so they aren't very tactical, it's sort of like, their response to everything is "OH NO, YOU DIDN'T PICK SOMETHING META, GG" immediately. The reality is, not only is it often better to try and outsmart your opponent, but it's more fun. The problem I'm starting to notice though now that I'm trying to make builds that are clever and effective, is that most other players simply don't want to engage with that level of creativity. They think it's weird, heretical, won't work. Simply put, most players seem to be incredibly risk averse, they don't want to do something that isn't "META" to them and so frankly, they're not even really playing the game in my eyes, they're just trying to craft repetitions of what pro players do and letting other players think for them. "Well this pro player AM does this, so, that's the only way you can play AM now". The problem is, then EVERYONE knows how you are going to play that hero and then they will be able to counter it far easier, than if you play a hero that breaks their expectations. Case and point for how this can work: Nyx is pretty squishy for the builds a lot of people seem to build. So, what that means is, when people try to pounce on MY Nyx build, which I make very tanky on purpose, they end up wasting tons of important abilities trying to initiate on me. Of course he isn't as straight up tanky as a Tide or Undying, he's tanky in a different way. That is, because people expect him to be squishy, making him significantly more tanky (and building to reflect dmg with a Blademail too) means that most people (Who think in terms of "META THIS, META THAT") are VERY surprised when they cannot nuke me down and instead I turn on them and nuke them back (including soloing POS 1's like PA, AM, you name it, as long as they aren't a super tanky hero themselves, this strategy almost -always- works). But here's where the problems come in: This build kicks ass, I know it does because I've played it many dozens of times now and can easily survive teamfights and then keep solo ganking even after the teamfight. The times when it DOESN'T work are only two categories really: when I am counter picked by a bounty hunter (that knows what they are doing), or a Tidehunter/Tiny/Undying/Centaur who can just outlast my nukes in time for their team to come gank me. But that's a lesson I learned early and so will not pick Nyx if two or more of those types of heroes are drafted. The biggest single reason my build does not work (when usually it will absolutely crack the META and force carries to worry about the pos 3 more than the pos 1 or 2 mid game) is because NO ONE trusts me (or any other player for that matter). If you say "Hey here's my build, it will work in this way and I expect this result based on my experiences against similar teams" and you're like a lvl 15 Nyx with a demonstrable high win rate, someone has to always say "Oh no...gg", "Nyx offlane, hahahahahahaha" "cringe". This is the problem with creativity in DOTA, it's terrifying to people who cannot think. Sure, Nyx is naturally a high risk, high reward hero, which is why you can nullify some of the risk to Nyx himself by making him beefy AND reflect dmg with a blademail which means that even if you can't quite kill the pos 1 with your own nukes, him turning on you thinking "Ahahaha, this Nyx has wasted all his nukes now" typically means "Oh shit, I'm killing myself with blademail and I can't do enough dmg because he has too much armor" and by then, my nukes are back up, and they are dead and I've tped out to safety. But because it's not "META" no one trusts me, there are no trust falls in DOTA haha, if I say "Guys, I am going to make this Nyx VERY TANKY, treat me like a tank/nuker when I initiate" they instead assume I'll die in 2 seconds. Meanwhile, I intitiate in front of my whole team and I survive all 5 of the enemies chasing me as my team abandons me thinking I was a lost cause. It's baffling, they see a hero and think "This is what this hero does. This is all that hero does. This is all this hero will ever do. This is the only way to play this hero. Anyone who says otherwise must be a noob. I don't trust other players. I don't even trust myself. DOTA is not a team game." This is how a lot of players come across to me. Haha. So maybe an addition to these rules, which are very good Jenkins, is that: try to give your teammates a FAIR chance to show you their creativity if they clearly aren't noobs. The game would be better if more people tried new ideas and in the moment techniques to outsmart enemies instead of the way most people think about games "Oh...they drafted XYZ Hero and you didn't, therefore, we lose".

i once played pos5 dark seer and stacked a camp 4 times. i kept telling my core to come take this. i even pinged the mid who was Lina to take it but they didnt. there was a techies in enemy team running around and thought he would take it for himself so i took the stack for myself. sometimes, cores are stupid.

I played since 2013 and there was as certain build up of a midlane mindset from absolutely go gank lanes to stay farm and win with gold advantage, because you'll just waste you time anyway, since people learnt to write "ss" for a missing hero in chat and your teammates on the lane have no mana and hp anyway. So now you actually need to break your midset as mid laner togo gank again.

Dota 2 was, (yes "was" or 2 years ago when I quit it) a toxic playerbase problem. Back then I used to defend that game, but then I grew up. Do one mistake, and my team would say "Screw this, I'll feed".

The problems with old dota players that played since dota 1 that they already have a mindset that really stops them from improving , dota is an evolving game , but i see a lot of people still playing the predictable old way of playing dota that is too strict .

As a support I trade with my carry with 2 small camps for 4 large camps and ancients all with 3-5 stacks by 13-15 mins. Then farm the lane when he goes jungling.

wait what? mid has always been great for roaming.. I remember playing solo mid for TDA in dota allstars like 15 years ago, and they always picked heavy roamers for me to play, like QoP and NA... Bottle + Rune is just too powerful, why wouldn't a mid roam? that's insane talk. It's literally always been amazing for mid to roam, what other reason is there to have a bottle/runes other than greed? It's for the mid to gank the side lanes. It was like that in dota allstars, AND in the betas for both HoN and DotA 2..

stealing farm for carries is usually prohibited for every support, but how if the carries rarely can do a last hit.. let say for around 2-3 wave, the carries only can do 1-2 last hit or maybe not more than 5, it's make frustated to see as a support

im in ancient bracket SEA we usually have a magnus mid that steal triangle farm in a badgame. E.X when i have a spectre game in a losing match up im force to take the hard farm / dangerous farm near unwarded area usually bottom lane that tower got taken because most of the time my magnus is taking the triangle. what should i do in this situation jenkins?

The first advice about the farm stealing is so goddam true. I used to play carry and fed up of mostly every single game having my farming patterns broken again and again and again. Even more sad than supports doing that is when offlaners, aggressive offlaners like slardar farming jungles. Just because I am aware of this and pay attention to this, now that I play mostly pos 3 nd 4 my games are much easier just because I respect my carry farm and make space for him.

Hey Jenkins! I'm currently really enjoying playing Undying pos 3, and just getting an aghs as soon as I can. I swear this shit is broken, his kit is absolutely not fair. Everyone plays undying like he's some weak guy who steals a bit of strength. MY WORD give this zombie an inch of farm and he will destroy you, if you have trouble in lane and you're solo? Just go into trees. I would honestly like to say I'm exaggerating but honestly try any level 1 carry on 300 max hp and see what they can do

I legitimately just lost a ranked game in ancient bracket after watching this and everything Jenkins mentioned appeared in that game.

I stack camps for my carry and spend every penny on them for the first 5-8mins. I get called a noob for not having items or being underleveled when I spent my time for my carry. It took them 22 mins to go for the camps I stacked but then a fight broke out, we lost and then the enemy took the camps. Im a very new player to Dota so im sorry for sounding stupid.

yo i was just thinking the same as jenkins said it. on the first problem, i was strictly only a carry player when i was legend for a couple of years, now i transitioned to strictly playing support role and now im ancient and i actually notice this. like if i am killing a camp, i look at the minimap and see that my carry is farming camps on the other end slowly going towards the camp im farming. i notice those things. what i do is to just make some of the creeps low and leave it
