Here's an alternate explanation: Notice how none of the notes in the melodies or bass lines are sharps or flats? That means that the key signature of the piece is C Major. Notice what those last few notes of the melody are? That's right. C. So the figure, phrase, motif or movement "resolved to the tonic." It ended on the best note to make it sound completed. A useful strategy to creating these motifs is to come up with a little phrase which ends on a note that's not the tonic (root note), nor the fifth nor the third. In C Major, that means don't end on C (root) or E (third) or G (fifth). End it on, say, F (fourth) or D (second). On the second-to-last motif, end on B (Major seventh, just one half-step below the root) or maybe G (but B is stronger). Then end the last phrase right on the root, C. Boom! You've written a melody that sounds like you know what you're doing. Another consideration is the rhythmic value of the notes you choose to create your melody(s). Are they all the same, whole notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, whatever? Maybe vary them. Here's an explanation that is clearer than whatever I could write here in this comments section: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9lgpNJzutyunnk.html He's a guitar player, but the principle is the same. That's enough of my Great American Novel here. Good luck.

I loved the video. I kept thinking the same thing. You’ve resolved to the tonic! That’s why it sounds so good even though it’s just one note repeating. It’s the key note for the key. So cool to either know that or feel that or both. Result is the same. Great channel; great comment.

by far the most informative video i've seen when it comes to producing original pieces, it's sometimes tough to expand on ideas and you end up looping the same patterns, or adding it more layers to fill out the sound but in reality you're just muddying the mix. I do a lot of beat production so original songs are very difficult for me but i've been learning as much as possible, thanks!!

to make a cadence sound finished it must end on the tonic, a good pretonic note is the 7th or 2nd which resolve naturally to the tonic. you could also have the melody be dissonant with the chord/bass progression to make the resolution sound even better, that's called 'suspension and release'.
