The rules are the offense must have 7 players on the line of scrimmage. The two outermost players at the line of scrimmage are eligible. All ineligible guys must be covered up by an eligible receiver. Anyone wearing 50-79 and 90-99 are automatically ineligible and have to report eligibility to the referee and anyone who is an eligible number (1-49, 80-89) must report ineligibility. Patriots are trying to force the illusion of 6 eligible receivers when only 5 were eligible. It's pretty clever overall until the NFL decided that creativity would be illegal.

Don't know if anyone saw highlights of this game on NFL Turning Point but this ineligible receiver gimmick was used twice before. Detroit Lions used it against Minnesota Vikings in Week 6 of the regular season (Stafford got sacked), and Alabama used it against LSU in college (resulted in a TD). Nobody made a big deal of it either time. John Harbaugh made this out to be much more than it was, because Belichick caught him totally offguard and made him look bad in the process.

When looking at the play from above as the camera angle shows, it's obvious that this isn't a normal formation because the two "receivers" on the right are on the line and the two receivers on the left or off the line. You're wrong. It's the *offenses* job to have 5 players be ineligible and 6 to be reported as eligible, otherwise it's a penalty. It is the job of the *Officials* to *inform* the defense which 6 players are eligible on every play. Since there is a rule that makes it so people without numbers 50-79 are eligible by default, the officials were supposed to completely stop the game and report the which of the 7 players with an eligible number was actually ineligible before every single play. The NFL determined that this trick play made it impossible to fairly officiate a job. Since the job of the officials is to fairly officiate, they changed the rules.

I'm a Ravens fan and I'm still pretty salty about this. I do want to know though, does the referee tell the defense that a lineman is eligible before the play or were the Ravens just supposed to figure it out on the fly? If it's the latter then I'm glad they got rid of the rule. It just seems so stupid to have a rule that says guys with certain numbers can't receive the ball unless they secretly check in with the ref before the snap.
@tsgiblin4 жыл бұрын
The official announced Vereen as ineligible. In the longer clips you can hear it over the PA "34 is reporting as ineligible..." . The Ravens should have known that an ineligible receiver cannot catch a pass, but n the confusion still covered Vereen. Even though Vereen is ineligible, he fakes by putting his hands up (as if to catch a pass) and runs behind the line of scrimmage.
@speedracer554 жыл бұрын
Simple rule, the guys on the ends of the LOS and the guys not in the LOS are eligible. #34 is on the LOS and covered by the WR on the end, so he's ineligible (even though he's standing in a WR stance). #47 is on the end of the LOS and is eligible (even though he's in a down lineman stance).

On the second play, #34 is uncovered. I thought he was supposed to be an ineligible receiver??? Or did he become eligible on the second play and #47 became ineligible? Because on the second play #34 stays back again and the guy in the left tackle's spot goes out for a pass. I think the second play was illegal formation. It is okay if the ineligible guy lines up in the slot because he has to be covered by an end, but on the second play he was not.
@chasfrizzell12909 жыл бұрын
The first play and the third play, Vereen (34) is ineligible. He is covered up and is the technical RT. He is split insanely far out. However, on the second play, one of the WRs on the near side of the screen is a linemen, allowing Vereen to run down the field. If you watch close, both of those receivers retreat..one pretending to run a screen and the other being a linemen.
@ryanlolley36829 жыл бұрын
My issue is that 2 lineman are not line up within 1 yard of the line of scrimmage (as is always the case). 63 & 76 both line up more than 1 yard off the ball. Because the rule is that the last person on the line (within 1 yard) is eligible it makes it difficult to tell who is technically on the line. If you're going to allow teams to do these types of formations then you have to better police how close everyone lines up to the actual line of scrimmage. 76 & 11 are lined up about the same distance off the line and 11 is technically in the backfield while 76 is a lineman blocking. I know these aren't the 2 players in questions but there's not a clearly defined 7 on the line to tell who the last 2 "eligible" players are. Obviously the other 4 players not on the line are eligible.
@ryanlolley36829 жыл бұрын
Make that #80, not #11, lined up the same distance as 76. Thought was Edelman 2nd from the top, not Amendola. I guess that's what i get for viewing a recording of a TV screen by a cell phone.
@scottkleckner69329 жыл бұрын
the line of scrimmage is the width of the field. A wide out can be "on the line", he just cannot "cover" (a player lined up between him and the ball) that is on line. If he does, THAT player is ineligible to got out for or receive a pass. There is no need to notify the defense. This is fundamental football rules. Figure it out.
@ryanlolley36829 жыл бұрын
***** Everything you said is true and none of it has to do with my statement. Good job on knowing the rules and not disagreeing with anything i said. My argument is that there are (by rule) less than 7 people lined up on the line of scrimmage (within 1 yard). Figured it out! :)
@chasfrizzell12909 жыл бұрын
Ryan Lolley NFL Linemen are notorious for not being right on the line. If you go back, I am sure the Ravens' linemen did the same thing. After you count those five "linemen" (if they are traditional or nontraditional) you need two additional players, TEs or WRs to line up on the line. However, if a 8th person lines up on the line he is ineligible to go down since he is covered up. The refs made repeated attempts to notify the Ravens that certain players were ineligible. The Ravens did not listen to the refs, which left them completely confused.
@michaelmckittrick13299 жыл бұрын
Ryan Lolley as Chas stated there is plenty of times that offensive lineman look like they are more than one yard off the line of scrimmage, especially when they are a a pass blocking formation. Each time the Patriots ran the three plays they had seven men on the line of scimmage and four behind it

@elnumbrotres9 жыл бұрын

They changed the rules last year because they didn't want to explain their shitty job of handling this, and didn't want the responsibility moving forward. Pats fans think their team is smart, but any team would be smart if the refs/league were helping them along. That said, the league should be more embarrassed about games like these than the Pats. The Pats did their job.

Patriots Fan You're a Pats fan so you will see it how you want. Any team in any sport that "takes advantage" of rules can only do so if the official/league allows it. NFL had the power to overturn the game and rulings if they wanted, but didn't because Kraft fought to get Goodell an annual $20 million salary raise. You can bet they would do it if say, the Browns or Lions used that play on the Patriots. None of that is a knock on the playcall but whether it worked or not had nothing to do with them.
