Today I share 4 (and a secret 5th at the end) reasons why I love sewing, quilting, patchwork, hand stitching, English paper piecing and embroidery more than ever before! I'm making a granny square quilt block from Liberty tana lawn fabric in the video and I am also doing some hand sewing of my Alexandria quilt which is a pattern by Tales of Cloth. I discuss things I have changed in recent years and how that has lead to more enjoyment from sewing. Have you changed anything about your hobby which has lead you to enjoy it more? Let me know in the comments.

In every stitch you make there is a little bit of your heart left behind that will be felt by those you hold close in your own heart and even after your finished quilt becomes worn and threadbare, you’ll look at it with an even warmer heart from all the memories of times spent sewing those pieces together along your life’s many little journeys and the joy it gave from comforting those you love. Anything you might see as less than perfect is just another love mark that you are leaving behind because it was made with your own hands and a loving, caring, generous heart, that is something that is so priceless. Happy piecing Emma!

This video truly warmed my heart, as so many of your videos do. The fact that you relax and take your time with the video and what you are saying is so soothing and calming; so many video makers talk so fast with almost a sense of being frantic that it really gives the watcher such a negative and stressful feeling. I am thrilled for you that you reached 10,000 subscribers; I always look forward to your videos and love it when I see you have posted a new one. I loved what your said about your first quilt and the things that make it mean so much to you. What a thrill that you have been published in a magazine; you totally deserve it and I know so many will love seeing the article and your work. Thank you so much for sharing your time and talents; it means so much to me to be able to go along on this journey with you. Blessings and hugs to you, Emma..................................

It has been a real joy to connect with lovely people like you here, thank you so so much Pam. Have a wonderful day x

I just discovered your channel today. I am 53 years old and have wanted to learn to see my whole life. I have just started to learn embroidery and the beautiful projects I see on Instagram really inspire me. I have to thank you for sharing about your journey of slowing down. I have a very stressful job and struggle with anxiety. There is something about holding soft beautiful cotton fabric in my hands that is so soothing. I plan to watch all of your videos and look forward to every new one. I really love your peaceful style. It helps me relax and breathe. ❤️

You know I can relate to what you said. About a year ago I realized that quilting was becoming more of a job then something relaxing. I've lost the real relaxing part of it. I'm gonna start paper piecing soon to get back the love, passion and relaxation that once I knew many many years ago. Sometimes we all need to reset our lives to stop and smell the roses. Thank you for your relaxing videos to remind me of this, I am so appreciative of how you remind me to STOP and relax and find my passion again. 🥰

Emma, you are much wiser than your years of living. I came to the knowledge, many yours ago, that no ones life is perfect; therefore, nothing in all we do is likewise perfect. I began, if not by accident, putting errors in my work to remind others that we are not perfect; if for no others reason but to lighten the stress that each of us face everyday. I love watching and listening to your videos. Your voice is very easy to listen too. You Emma are a blessing to my soul providing peace for my day. May God continue to bless you.

You are so right about not worrying about unfinished projects; I just look in my cupboard and see a myriad, but sewing is about so much more than finishing something. I have a box full of various EPP badted hexagons with no actual project in mind. It's the therapy of the cutting and basting in front of the tv after work. For the past week I have been doing this with various scraps of oranges and yellows just because I like the warmth and vibrance of the colours!

This was a lovely treat tonight listening to your lovely gentle calm voice Emma. I appreciate and agree with those ideas of taking our time, enjoying the process and doing things our own way instead of following rules all the time and accepting our own work and not looking for perfection in all things.. Life would be so much nicer and we would be so much healthier if we applied those same strategies to other things as well as sewing. I had been struggling with my mental and physical health and since finding and subscribing to your channel I am feeling stronger and much less overwhelmed by life. I am once again enjoying sewing and making time for myself and this is really paying off. Thank you so much for the beautiful way you present your videos and the confidence you instill in us. God bless you Emma.

Emma, Congratulations on so many achievements!! But especially on discovering how to manage & what makes you truly happy about sewing. Then, to do the things your way without worrying about things that aren’t truly important. Because it brings you so much happiness now, that you’re able to share your thoughts, discoveries, tips, projects, and suggestions! I believe that many of us, who enjoy & follow you, have many similar needs, wants, ideas, & talents. That’s why we are so drawn to your calm soothing presentations, they are a gentle way to remind ourselves to do the same, to slow down to enjoy all aspects of our lives, our families & friends, our down time, our sewing, etc. I think listening to you is a reminder of why women use to get together to sew, talk, share ideas, help each other, celebrate together, etc. Your channel is a modern version of the Quilting Bees of yesterday(from many generations ago). 🌻It’s like therapy with friends! 💕

Embrace the entire journey. I suck at being perfect in my quilting, but for the people to whom I gift them, they think I am the best quilter in the world. That is what sharing love is all about and if they have ever seen an error in the gift, they have never mentioned it to me. Ah, yes, I enjoy the journey and consider being able to do it, a gift for me.

Emma your first quilt is lovely, the first quilt I made was for my mum who was in a hospice at the time. It is horribly imperfect but I just wanted to finish it for my mum to enjoy...the smile she had on her face meant everything, the fact it's a mess is no longer important because she loved it!! My dad is passing it to my daughter to comfort her!! I'm in love with your sewing room and your sewn items.....they are all so gorgeous!! I never stick to one project...or rarely, I get bored easily I often wonder if it's due to my dyslexia!! Thank you for this lovely video!!xxx

Morning Emma! Just watched this lovely video with a cup of tea. It held so many valuable lessons for me about abandoning perfectionism and appreciating the process. I used to be the same, desperate to get to the end result, so much so that I always ran out of steam and never finished anything. I’m older now, have brought up a daughter, moved house several times, always worked….there’s always something to eat into your time! Now I’m in my 50’s and am able to make a little bit of time for myself, indeed have realised that we MUST do that, it’s not a luxury but a necessity really. I really enjoy doing little projects that are achievable but taking my time over them. You’ve given me lots of ideas and I’ve tried hexiform and love it. I love that you have a photo of you and your grandma in your sewing room. You are very lucky to have had such a lovely relationship with her. My grandparents lived a long way from me and I never had much of a relationship with any of them. It’s only now I realise how sad that is. Anyway enough rambling! A big thank you for bringing some much needed cheer and comfort into the world ❤

I've really enjoyed this video Emma and will make a point of watching it again ... frequently as I benefit greatly from your wisdom and can feel myself relaxing and becoming calmer as I watch and listen to your videos. It is so true that we all need to appreciate the journey, take our time, ditch the rules and acknowledge that we are human and that our creativity is a very important and special part of us. I've always been a perfectionist and wouldn't 'allow' myself to break the rules like you mention but am learning good things from you that help me in all aspects of my daily life! Hi Emma, most people who have made a first quilt will be critical of it. You learn ways and techniques in your sewing journey and if you made the same quilt now, you would put those skills you have learnt into practice. Congratulations in being featured in a magazine. Such a wonderful accomplishment! How many of us stick to one project at a time? Not many, we are always impatient and want to start the next project before the first one is completed. The is nothing wrong with not doing triangles - if you want to use squares, then you carry on as you are Emma. These 'rules' are guidelines in my view. Great video as always.

I totally agree with you on not worrying about your mistakes. We have what we call here in the US the "quilt police" - I don't worry about them at all. LOL So excited about your magazine article and subscribers for you!!

Thank you Emma, for sharing your beautiful work and your philosophy on sewing. You have really made a huge impact on me. All I ever wanted was for somebody to make me something homemade, handmade. No one did. When I made things for people in my family they did not like them and literally snubbed their noses up at them. Because my work was not perfect. The love involved in making my gifts was never factored in by the receiver of my gifts. I sit here crying now. I can relate to almost everything you have talked about, regarding your feelings about sewing. You are very special❣ I purchased a nice sewing machine and many nice fabrics and tools. Yet I still am not able to sit down and focus to do the work. I think I just realized why. It's purely psychological. Come to think of it I have been ridiculed by all members of my family forever. So thanks again for being so open and ecouraging..🥰😍

Hi Charlie, I am so sorry to hear what you have been through and to hear your gifts were not appreciated. It has definitely happened to me that I have spent hours on making a gift, with love, care and thought put into it, only to realise that the receiver would have preferred something on which I had spent money, not time. Please don't be discouraged or upset. Make what you love, for yourself. Just do a little bit and hopefully you will enjoy the process and want to do more. Take care

Emma, I have also been set free from perfection. Currently, my projects are wall art made of fabric, thread, lace, buttons, whatever etc I can find. Some of them have embroidered messages.
